The take on La Casa de los Naranjos

La Casa de los Naranjos is a 19th-century manor house in Haría, the village in the north of Lanzarote that islanders call the valley of a thousand palms, and it is named for the thirty orange trees along its front. It was close to ruin, with fallen timber ceilings and cracked stone walls, when its present owners found it on a family holiday and bought it ten days later. The restoration used the house's own wood, stone and lime, with advice from the Cabildo's historic heritage service. It opened in December 2021 with eight rooms, is listed as a monumental building in Lanzarote's heritage catalogue and holds the Canary government's Hotel Emblemático classification.

No two rooms are alike. The house kept its original floors, doors and paintwork, and filled the rooms with antiques and with headboards and desks made from timber salvaged from the building. Downstairs, the rooms open off corridors lit by the central patio; upstairs, they line the corridor that leads to the roof terrace. Room 1 has two connecting spaces under ceilings of almost five metres and a freestanding bath. Room 5 has a clawfoot tub and a headboard painted by a local artist. Room 6 has its own terrace facing the mountain and the village, and Rooms 2 and 3 add two single beds on an upper level for families.

Small is the point. With eight rooms, the whole house feels like yours: a salon whose two tall windows face south, a library of 19th-century volumes with its globes and atlas table, a stone-arched cistern under the patio, the orange garden and a roof terrace over the palms. Breakfast is included in every rate and cooked to order, served in the dining room, the salon or the sunny patio. On the nights the kitchen opens, dinner is candlelit, modern cooking built on traditional dishes and local produce. Haría is small and walkable: the village square is 5 minutes on foot and the Casa-Museo César Manrique, the house and studio where the artist lived and worked in his last years, 8 minutes.

The trade is everything a resort gives you. There is no pool for now (an expansion adding rooms, a restaurant and a pool was under way in 2026) and no beach in the village: the nearest swim is Playa de la Garita at Arrieta, a 10-minute drive. Dinner is served on some nights of the week, not all, and there are steps up to the door and a narrow, winding stair to the first floor. Book it for three or four nights in the north, for walkers, readers and couples who want a house rather than a resort.

Where La Casa de los Naranjos is, and getting there

The house is at Calle Rincón de Aganada 4, a few streets west of Haría's square, at the foot of the mountains that close the valley. On foot, the Plaza León y Castillo is 5 minutes away and the Casa-Museo César Manrique 8.

Driving off-peak, Playa de la Garita at Arrieta is 10 minutes, the Jameos del Agua 14, the Mirador del Río 16, Teguise 23, the Fundación César Manrique 25 and the Timanfaya visitor centre at Mancha Blanca 47; the Papagayo beaches in the far south are about 70 minutes. The airport is 36 minutes and Arrecife about half an hour. Buses 7, 7-D and 8 run from Arrecife to Haría by way of Arrieta, but nothing runs direct from the airport, so a car makes sense here. Parking at the hotel is free. Evenings are village-quiet.
