On 1 September 1730 the ground opened near the village of Chimanfaya, and for six years, to 1736, eruption followed eruption across the west of Lanzarote. Villages and farmland went under the lava, and a new landscape of cones, craters and black fields came up in their place. The heart of it is Timanfaya National Park, which you see from the park's own coach. Around it lies Los Volcanes Natural Park, 10,158 hectares in Tinajo, Yaiza and Tías, made of the same 1730 to 1736 lava and of a smaller eruption in 1824. This is where you can walk.

Geotrekking Lanzarote, a small guiding firm from Teguise, leads a circular route of about 9 kilometres through the natural park. It takes about three hours and climbs only about 50 metres, so the operator rates it low difficulty; GetYourGuide asks for moderate fitness, which is fair for 9 km on cinder paths and rough lava. The route runs through what the operator calls the Valley of Silence, past hornitos (small tower-shaped vents of welded lava), caves, jameos (openings where the roof of a lava tube has fallen in) and the craters of the eruption. The guide explains how the landscape formed and what the volcanoes meant, and still mean, to the people who live around them.

Snacks and water are included. You either meet the group at the start, in the municipality of Tinajo, or pay for the pickup option. The operator sends the exact time and meeting point the day before, and GetYourGuide lists English as the tour language. Groups are small. Bring water of your own and closed shoes: sandals and flip flops are not allowed on the lava.

What this is not: the Fire Mountains. The park's Ruta de los Volcanes coach, the heat demonstrations at Islote de Hilario and the El Diablo restaurant are inside the national park, behind the official 30 euro ticket. This walk is the quieter half of the same story, on foot, with the ground under your boots.

Why this one

Of the four guided volcano walks we compared on GetYourGuide, it has the most reviews, about 1,600 on 26 October 2026, rated 4.8, and guests score its guides 4.9 out of 5. The closest rival, the Guided Volcano Hike with Transfers, is rated 4.9 from about 950 reviews, from 42 euros, and runs 3.5 to 4 hours with transfers in the title; the Volcano Hike Among Craters and Lava Tunnels adds tunnels for the same 44 euros, from about 430 reviews, and must be booked two days ahead. A walk listed as Trekking in Timanfaya Natural Park, starting from Masdache, is rated 4.8 from about 990. All four are rated 4.8 or higher; this one has the longest record.

Booking direct costs the same. Geotrekking's own site sells this walk at 44 euros without pickup and 49 euros with pickup, snack and water, on 26 October 2026, and offers a group discount, so a family or a group of friends may do better asking the operator. If you would rather see the Fire Mountains, the craters from the coach and the heat demonstrations, take The island in a day instead, which covers Timanfaya, the caves and the north; if you would rather drive yourself over volcanic tracks, The buggy goes up to Peñas del Chache.

Good for

  • Walkers who want to stand in the lava, not look at it through glass
  • Anyone curious about how the 1730 eruptions made the island
  • A half day that leaves the afternoon or morning free

Not for

  • Anyone who wants the Fire Mountains coach route and the geysers
  • Walkers who cannot manage 9 km on loose, uneven ground
  • Visitors without a car who skip the pickup option

Temperature is the median at 12:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 12:00; gusty, the share of days with gusts over 50 km/h at 12:00. Modelled from Open-Meteo historical weather for 2021 to 2025.

Summer is the windy season

The trade winds blow hardest in summer. In the five years of weather we looked at, gusts passed 50 km/h at midday on 28 days in 100 in July and 23 in August, against 8 in October and November. There is no shade on the lava at any time of year.

From our Lanzarote hotels

The operator texts the exact meeting point, in the municipality of Tinajo, the day before, so drive times are routed on OpenStreetMap roads to Mancha Blanca, the village on the edge of the park. The pickup option costs 5 euros more on the operator's own site; it names no pickup towns, so ask when you book whether your hotel is covered.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • The guides, scored 4.9 out of 5 by guests on GetYourGuide
  • A relaxed pace through the craters and lava, with time for photos
  • A small group, away from the coach crowds

Complaints

  • Meeting and pickup details that arrive late, the day before

The catch

  1. The meeting point comes the day before

Geotrekking confirms the start time and place, in the municipality of Tinajo, by message the day before. A few guests say the details reached them late.

What to do. Check your messages, including WhatsApp, the afternoon before, and reply to confirm.

  2. You need a car or the pickup

The start is in the country on the edge of the park, 14 minutes by road from La Geria, about 20 from Puerto del Carmen and 34 from Playa Blanca.

What to do. Hire a car, or book the pickup option and confirm your hotel is covered.

  3. Closed shoes, or you do not walk

Sandals and flip flops are not allowed. The path is loose cinder and the lava is sharp, and 9 km takes about three hours.

What to do. Wear trainers or walking shoes with a firm sole, and bring your own water as well as the bottle supplied.

  4. There is no shade, and summer is windy

In the weather data we looked at, midday gusts passed 50 km/h on 28 days in 100 in July; October and November were the calmest months, at 8.

What to do. Bring a hat, sun cream and a light windproof layer, whatever the month.

  5. The Fire Mountains are a separate visit

The national park coach route and the heat demonstrations are not part of this walk. The official ticket for Montañas del Fuego is 30 euros, sold by the island's tourist centres, for an entry time between 09:00 and 15:45.

What to do. Pair the two on the same day by car, or book The island in a day for the coach route.

  6. Book ahead

GetYourGuide stops selling the walk 10 hours before the start, and lists it as likely to sell out.

What to do. Book a few days ahead, early in your stay, so a windy day can be moved.

Questions people ask

Good questions about A guided hike across the lava fields of the 1730 eruptions

Can you hike in Timanfaya National Park?

Not freely: the Fire Mountains are seen from the park's own coach on the Ruta de los Volcanes, with no walking or private cars on that route. This hike is in Los Volcanes Natural Park next door, on lava from the same 1730 to 1736 eruptions.

How long and how hard is the Timanfaya lava fields hike?

About 9 km in about three hours, on a circular route with only about 50 metres of climbing. The operator rates it low difficulty; GetYourGuide asks for moderate fitness, because the ground is loose cinder and rough lava.

How much does the hike cost?

From 44 euros on GetYourGuide on 26 October 2026. The operator sells it at the same 44 euros direct, or 49 euros with hotel pickup, snack and water.

Does the hike include the Fire Mountains and the geysers?

No. The coach route and the heat demonstrations at Islote de Hilario are behind the official Montañas del Fuego ticket, 30 euros on 26 October 2026, sold online for an entry time between 09:00 and 15:45. You can add them by car on the same day.

Where does the Timanfaya hike start?

In the municipality of Tinajo, on the edge of the natural park. The operator sends the exact meeting point and time the day before, by message.

What should I wear for a volcano hike on Lanzarote?

Closed-toe shoes with a good grip; sandals and flip flops are not allowed. Bring water, a hat and sun cream, since there is no shade on the lava, and a light layer for the wind.

When did the Timanfaya volcanoes erupt?

The great eruption began on 1 September 1730 and went on until 1736. A smaller eruption followed in 1824. The lava of both covers the national park and the natural park around it.
