The take on Hotel César Lanzarote

Hotel César Lanzarote occupies a former Manrique family house at La Asomada, a farming village in the municipality of Tías, on the slopes between the vineyards of La Geria and the Atlantic. It opened in 2023 with 20 rooms, run by the Annua group, and guests must be 16 or over. The old vineyard on the estate has been revived and bears fruit again, and the house makes much of its own power and water, with solar panels and desalination. The MICHELIN Guide gives it One Key, its mark for a very special stay.

The rooms carry the island in white walls, green details and black lava, with underfloor heating in every category. The cheapest, the Double Room, is about 25 m² on the ground floor, with its own terrace towards the volcano. Above it, the Double Room with Volcano View and the Superior Room are about 30 m² on the first floor, with no terrace. The terraces grow with the price: the Superior Room with Terrace and Sea View faces both the sea and the volcano, the Junior Suite adds a bathtub and 40 m² inside, the Suite with Terrace and Volcano View has a living room and a terrace of about 40 m², and the Master Suite, on the mezzanine, has a terrace of about 60 m² over the sea and the volcano.

The reason to come is that you need not leave. The pool looks over the hillside to the coast, with a pool restaurant from 11am to 7pm and a terrace bar from 5pm to 7pm, both for residents only. Breakfast is included. Massages are given in the house's old aljibes, its water cisterns, and yoga and an outdoor gym are there when you want them. At night César Restaurant serves Gonzalo Calzadilla's cooking of island fish, garden produce and local farmers' work, with tasting menus of 13 and 10 courses that run from La Graciosa to Yaiza; outside diners must book. A June night for two starts at about €340.

The trade is distance and money. There is no beach and nothing to walk to: Puerto Calero is a 7-minute drive, Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen 12 and the airport 13, so a hire car is part of the stay. Almost every date carries a two-night minimum, and between November and January the cheapest room costs €520 to €810 a night. Book it for three or four quiet nights as a couple, driving out to Timanfaya and the north by day and back for the sunset. For a beach on the doorstep or a holiday with children, it is the wrong hotel.
