Noise in Lisbon has an address. After dark the Bairro Alto's lanes fill with people drinking in the street, the night drifts down to the bars behind Cais do Sodré, which keep going until sunrise, and the 28E tram rattles through Chiado and Alfama until after midnight. Distance from those streets matters more than stars. All three hotels on this page keep their distance: Hotel das Amoreiras and Sublime Lisboa in residential Amoreiras, 23 to 30 minutes' walk from the Bairro Alto, and Palácio Príncipe Real on a street of old mansions below the Príncipe Real garden, thirteen minutes away, in a quarter that is residential after dark.

The trade is the journey home: from Amoreiras, dinner in Chiado ends with a taxi or the late bus; from Príncipe Real, with a climb. Nineteen rooms and suites in two eighteenth-century townhouses on Praça das Amoreiras, a residential garden square, not a through road, with the aqueduct's last arches along one side. Amoreiras has no nightlife and no big sights, so evenings here run to a neighbourhood dinner and an early night.
Inside, the house is set up for sleep: carpeted corridors, heavy doors and thick windows. There is no restaurant, pool or spa. Downstairs are a breakfast room, a cobbled courtyard around a centenary olive tree and a small mirrored 1970s bar, and breakfast is cooked to order until noon. Rooms look one of two ways, across the square to the aqueduct or into the courtyard at the olive tree, and the 24E tram stops on the square for the ride down to Chiado by day.

The quiet square is the point of this address, and this is the category that faces it, looking across the Jardim das Amoreiras to the aqueduct from the first or second floor.
Fifteen rooms and suites in a townhouse on Rua Marquês de Subserra, a short residential street of flats and parked cars a few streets from Parque Eduardo VII. Guests single out how well soundproofed the rooms are. There is no rooftop bar, pool or spa, and instead of a lobby the ground floor holds a hall, a sitting room and Davvero, the Italian restaurant. That is the one room that fills up, and it stops serving dinner at 10pm, or 10.30pm from Thursday to Saturday. Reception is open around the clock.
Choose by outlook. The Lisboa Rooms face the street from the ground and first floors, while two of the three Pateo Rooms open onto a private planted courtyard. And a quiet dinner out needs no taxi: three restaurants with Michelin stars are within five minutes' walk.

An 1877 palace on Rua de São Marçal, one of the cobbled streets of old mansions that fall away below Príncipe Real, the hilltop quarter that is residential after dark. The calm here depends on the side of the house. Rooms on the garden side look over a walled garden of lawn, bougainvillea and a jacaranda rather than the street. On the street front the hotel has added a second set of double-glazed windows, and every bedroom on the first and second floors has double doors. It takes guests of 16 and over, in twenty-odd rooms.
EVOO, the restaurant, takes non-residents too and serves in the garden when the sun is out, but its kitchen closes at 10.30pm and the garden is cleared by midnight. Of the three, it is also the closest to Chiado: Praça Luís de Camões is a 17-minute walk, on a route that climbs both ways.

How do you get back to a quiet Lisbon hotel after dinner in Chiado?
From Palácio Príncipe Real, Praça Luís de Camões is a 17-minute walk that climbs both ways. For Hotel das Amoreiras, the 24E tram climbs from Camões to the square, three minutes from the door, with the last departures at 20:05 on weekdays, 19:15 on Saturdays and 18:05 on Sundays and holidays; after that, the 758 bus leaves Camões for Rato until 00:13 every night and stops five minutes' walk from the door. Sublime Lisboa is 33 minutes from Chiado on foot, uphill at the end of the evening, so budget for a taxi.
Is Lisbon noisy during the June festivals?
In the old quarters, yes. All through June the arraiais, the neighbourhood street parties, bring grilled sardines and loud music to Alfama and its neighbours, and the Festas de Lisboa peak on the night of 12 to 13 June: the Marchas Populares parade down Avenida da Liberdade, and Alfama, Mouraria and Graça party until dawn. None of our three quiet hotels is in those quarters or on the Avenida: two are in residential Amoreiras and one in Príncipe Real. Book months ahead for those nights.
