Neighbourhood bakery with tiled counters · €
Across the street, on the corner of Rua da Rosa, one of the shops of Panificação S. Roque, a bakery company formed in 1961 from several small Bairro Alto bakeries. Its own photographs show why it is worth crossing for: marble columns with gilded capitals over a tiled counter full of bread and pastries. Stand at the counter for a coffee and something sweet; it is the nearest breakfast that is not the hotel's.

Portuguese petiscos meet Spanish tapas · €€
A relaxed room two minutes along the street, where Portuguese petiscos and Spanish tapas share one menu built for passing round: jamón ibérico croquettes at 9 euros, patatas bravas, salt cod à Brás, then duck rice or a squid-ink paella for the table. Its own site gives lunch and dinner every day, 12:00 to 15:30 and from 18:30 on weekdays, and straight through from noon at weekends.

Ceviche and pisco sour bar · €€€
Kiko Martins's ceviche bar, open since 2014, with a giant octopus hanging over the counter and a pisco sour to start. The ceviches, 23 to 42 euros on the current menu, give the Peruvian method a Portuguese accent, and cured cod turns up among the hot dishes. Its own site gives every day from 12:00 to 23:00 without a break, which makes it the answer to a late lunch; arrive at noon rather than at eight.
