Where to eat at and around Palácio Príncipe Real

You are on Rua de São Marçal, with the restaurants of Príncipe Real a few minutes uphill and Praça das Flores, a small square, three minutes below. At home, EVOO cooks all day until 10.30pm from a short, mostly plant-based menu made with the owners' own olive oil, mains 28 to 35 euros on the summer card, and takes non-residents who book when it has room; the bar opens onto the terrace on sunny days. Everything below is within seven minutes on foot, so you will not need a car or a taxi.

  • Boubou's

    3 min walk

Contemporary French bistro, dinner only · €€€

Three minutes up the hill, and the answer on a night when the hotel's mostly plant-based menu will not do. A contemporary French bistro that the Michelin Guide lists without a star, whose creative lead won Top Chef France in 2022. Its own site gives Tuesday to Saturday, 19:00 to midnight, so Sunday and Monday are out. On Wednesdays a lamb shoulder cooked for seven hours is pulled apart at the table, 34 euros a head for two or more, by pre-booking only.

  • Pão de Canela

    3 min walk

    All-day café on the square · €

Three minutes down the hill, a café and restaurant that has been on Praça das Flores for more than twenty years and opens every day from 9:00 to 23:30. For a breakfast that is not the hotel's, it is the one on the doorstep: a pastel de nata for 1.70 euros and an espresso for 1.30, or a brioche with fried egg, tomato and avocado for 9. The restaurant menu, served all day, runs to a bitoque for 16 and grilled octopus for 23.

  • Atalho Real

    5 min walk

Steakhouse with aged beef cuts · €€

A steakhouse from a Lisbon group that began with a stall in the Campo de Ourique market, and the counterweight to a hotel kitchen that leans plant-based. Plates of about 220 grams come with two sides, from 21 euros for Black Angus maminha to 28 for aged entrecôte, with wagyu from 34, and the big aged cuts go by the kilo. Its own site gives noon to midnight most days and to 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with a break from 17:00 to 18:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

  • A Cevicheria

    6 min walk

    Peruvian ceviche bar, walk-in only · €€€

The ceviche counter on Rua Dom Pedro V, under a giant octopus, with a street window the restaurant bills as the most famous in Lisbon. Its own site says walk-in only and gives noon to 23:00 every day, so arrive at opening or expect to wait with a pisco sour in hand. Ceviches run from 23 to 42 euros a plate, which makes a full meal dearer than a counter lunch sounds.

Portuguese petiscos and Spanish tapas on one sharing menu: croquetas of Ibérico ham for 9 euros, patatas bravas for 11, and a black paella with prawn and cuttlefish at 39. Breakfast

Breakfast is included in the one rate the hotel sells, and it is à la carte rather than a buffet, served until midday: in the dining room, on the terrace, by the pool or in your room. It is the one meal here that costs nothing extra, so take it slowly. The alternative on the doorstep is Pão de Canela on Praça das Flores, three minutes' walk, open from 9:00 every day.

What to skip

Ordering in. The hotel's terms ban take-away food and drink anywhere on the premises, garden included, and delivery riders are turned away at the door, so a late pizza means going out for one. And be wary of any place in the lanes below Rua Dom Pedro V that sends a waiter onto the pavement with a laminated menu: the five places above are a better use of the walk.
