The catch at Verride Palácio Santa Catarina
Five things stand between the photograph and the stay. The photograph is the Tagus from the roof at sunset; the stay can be a room that looks at the rooftops of Bica, an unheated pool in February and an Uber that is not allowed to reach the door.

The cheapest room looks at Bica, not the river, and so do the next two categories up
The entry category, the Santa Catarina Superior Room, looks over the orange rooftops of Bica from the second, sixth and seventh floors, and the hotel sells it as a city view. In mid-February 2027 it was 663 euros a night, non-refundable with breakfast; the Superior Room with River View, on the fifth to seventh floors, was 808, so the Tagus costs 145 euros a night. The next two categories up, the Junior Suite at 961 and the Bica Suite at 999, cost more again and still face the city.
Nor is the palace in the photographs what the entry rooms are sold on. The hotel describes its rooms in terms of simple lines and modern elegance; the hand-painted silk panels, Rococo stucco and carved wooden ceilings its own site describes belong to the two Royal Suites, from 2,550 euros a night on the same dates.
What to do. Book the Superior Room with River View at the least. If original decoration is the point, ask the hotel which rooms have it before you pay for a suite.
The viewpoint outside is loud on summer evenings, and the hotel has a door onto it
The address is Rua de Santa Catarina 1, and by the hotel's own reckoning the Miradouro de Santa Catarina is a minute from the door. Lisbon's tourist board sells it as the place to watch the sun go down over the Tagus, with music and beer going on into the night. The palace joins in rather than hiding from it: The Lisbon Club 55 has its own entrance from the viewpoint, and the Sunrise Terrace on the roof is open to non-residents, with a 25 euro minimum spend a head, until 22:30 in summer.
The windows are double-glazed, but guests report sound insulation that lets the evening in, and the balconies are where it arrives first: one Junior Suite and the Salavisa Suite have balconies on the front of the palace, over Praça de Santa Catarina.
What to do. Ask for a river-view room on the sixth or seventh floor, in what the hotel calls the most private part of the building. If you sleep lightly, do not take a balcony over the square in summer.
There is no gym and no spa, and the rooftop pool is small and unheated
The hotel's own FAQ is plain about it: there is no gym, only partnerships with gyms elsewhere and help with transport to them. There is no spa either. Treatments are run by Pure SPA Signature by Anabela de Sousa in the hotel's massage rooms or in your own room, and the Verride massage is 155 euros for 45 minutes.
The Panoramic Pool on the roof is outdoors, open at any hour and, according to the same FAQ, not heated. The hotel does not publish its size; its own photograph shows a small rectangle with loungers along one side, a pool to cool off in rather than to swim lengths, and in the winter months an unheated outdoor pool is scenery. The hotel also hires out the Tagus Room, where breakfast is served, together with the rooftop bar as a private event space.
What to do. If you train, ask about the partner gym when you book. If the pool matters, come in summer, and ask whether the roof is booked for an event on your dates.
Uber and Bolt stop at a barrier, and the Bica funicular is shut
The palace sits inside one of Lisbon's restricted-access historic quarters. If you drive, you stop at a barrier on Rua Marechal Saldanha and give a weekly code the hotel sends in advance; parking is valet, 25 euros a day, subject to availability. Uber and Bolt are not allowed in and leave you at the barrier, which the hotel puts at 150 to 200 metres from the door, luggage and all. Traditional taxis can drive in, and the hotel itself advises you to watch the meter.
Once you are here, the walk down to the river at Cais do Sodré is easy and the walk back is a climb. The Ascensor da Bica, the funicular three minutes away on foot, is closed; Carris, which runs it, points passengers to the 22B bus between Rua de São Paulo and Largo do Calhariz instead.
What to do. Take a traditional taxi from the airport, and if you are driving, get the access code before you set off. For the climb home from Cais do Sodré, budget for a taxi.
It costs grand-hotel money, and the flexible rate ends five days out
The cheapest room was 663 euros a night in mid-February 2027 and 850 for 20 to 22 April, non-refundable with breakfast, and Lisbon's tourist tax of 4 euros a person a night comes on top. The non-refundable rate is 15 per cent below the flexible one, which was 780 euros on the February dates and can only be cancelled free until 11pm five days before arrival; after that the whole stay is charged. Below the Salavisa Suite, butler service and transfers are marked as possible extras.
Guests describe the hotel as very expensive for what it delivers, and report air conditioning, door hardware and showers that do not always behave.
What to do. Book the non-refundable rate only when your dates are fixed, and report any fault on the first evening, not at check-out.
Who should skip it
Families with children under five, whom the hotel does not accept, and anyone with a child under 12 hoping to eat at SUBA. Swimmers, gym-goers and anyone who struggles with hills. Light sleepers in summer. And anyone booking the cheapest room for a view it does not have.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone for whom the hotel is the occasion: an anniversary, a proposal, a weekend built around sunset on the roof. Eighteen rooms, a five-course breakfast cooked to order and the Tagus from the terrace are what the money buys. Book a river-view room or a Premium Suite, and take a taxi up the hill.
The catch elsewhere in Lisbon
- Bairro Alto HotelChiado
Rooms facing the square hear Bairro Alto nightlife and the tram until late.
- Palácio Príncipe RealPríncipe Real
Rates now sit firmly in the upper band for a small hotel whose spa is two treatment rooms.
- Hotel das AmoreirasAmoreiras
Not central: Chiado is downhill and the return is a climb, a taxi or the 758 bus.
- The IvensChiado
Entry rooms are small, and the hotel names no outlook for them.
- Four Seasons Hotel Ritz LisbonAvenida da Liberdade
The location is grand rather than atmospheric; old Lisbon is a walk or a taxi away.
- Memmo Príncipe RealPríncipe Real
Not every room has the view; the entry category is sold without one.
- Sublime LisboaAmoreiras
Not central; expect taxis or a long walk to the old town.
- Santiago de AlfamaAlfama
No parking in the old quarter; without the hotel's paid transfer, luggage goes up cobbled lanes.
- Palácio LudoviceSão Pedro de Alcântara
Bairro Alto nightlife brings noise to street-facing rooms, especially at weekends.

Our verdict
The romantic booking in Lisbon. Take the river side, book the rooftop for sunset and let the palace do the rest.
