SUBA
A chef's tasting-menu restaurant inside an 18th-century palace, Michelin-recommended without a star, Thursday to Monday evenings. Lisbon books it as a night out. The move afterwards is upstairs to the roof.
Book well ahead: tables go weeks out
You are at the top of the Santa Catarina hill: Bairro Alto, Chiado and Cais do Sodré are all within about ten minutes on foot, and none of the way back is flat. You do not need a car. In the palace, SUBA, in the Michelin Guide since 2022, serves tasting menus from 80 euros, Thursday to Monday evenings, to diners aged 12 and over; The Lisbon Club 55 cooks Portuguese at lunch and dinner daily, with its own door onto the miradouro; and on the roof terrace the 25 euro minimum applies only to non-residents.

Directly above the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, with a 360-degree sweep of the river and the bridge. One of the few hotel rooftops locals treat as a destination; non-guests pay a minimum spend, which keeps it civilised.

Pastel de nata factory counter · €
The first Manteigaria, in the Art Nouveau building of 1900 that was the headquarters of the Manteigaria União butter cooperative, with the old name kept on the façade. It makes pastéis de nata and nothing else, and you can stand inside and watch the next batch being made. Its own site gives 8am to midnight, and suggests carrying a box of them to the Miradouro do Adamastor, which is to say your own front door.

Seafood house with sushi bar · €€€
Opened in 2010 as a tribute to the fish markets Lisbon has lost, with Japanese precision applied to Portuguese fish and shellfish: a sushi bar alongside the fish of the day, oysters and octopus. It is the informal counterpoint to a tasting menu at SUBA. Its own site gives 12:30 to 15:30 and 19:00 to midnight on weekdays, straight through from 12:30 to midnight at weekends, and asks you to book ahead.

Dry-aged steakhouse with a Josper · €€€
A steakhouse that does one thing properly: beef dry-aged in a controlled chamber, 30 days for the vazia and the entrecôte, finished in a charcoal Josper oven, from a 200 gram vazia at 35 euros to Japanese Kobe rib eye at 950 euros a kilo. It came 81st in the World's Best Steaks ranking for 2025. Its own site gives lunch and dinner every day, until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday. The walk down is eight minutes; the walk back is uphill.

Food hall in Mercado da Ribeira · €€
The original Time Out Market, opened in 2014 inside the Mercado da Ribeira: 26 restaurant counters and 8 bars under one roof, chosen by the magazine's critics, with Marlene Vieira and a Sea Me counter among them. Its own site gives 10:00 to midnight every day. It is loud, communal and full of visitors, which is the point when you want lunch without a booking, and the Cais do Sodré metro and train stations are two minutes away.

Two-star contemporary Portuguese tasting menu · €€€€
José Avillez's restaurant in Chiado holds two Michelin stars, and it is the obvious night out when SUBA is shut, because it opens on Tuesday and Wednesday. Its own site gives Tuesday to Saturday, 12:30 to 15:00 and 19:00 to 22:00, closed Sunday and Monday. The Belcanto tasting menu is 295 euros, wine pairings start at 165, and tasting menus are served until 21:00 at dinner, so do not book the last table.

Guests single out the breakfast: five courses cooked to order from the chef's daily suggestions, taken whole or in part, in the Tagus Room over the city and the river from 7:30 to 11:30, on the roof, or all day in your room. Check that your rate includes it; non-residents pay 45 euros for it. For something else, Dear Breakfast's Bica branch on Rua das Gaivotas, six minutes away on foot, does brunch every day from 8am to 4pm.
Any restaurant in the Bairro Alto lanes just up the hill that sends a waiter onto the pavement with a menu of photographed dishes. Eat properly first, at one of the places above, and go up afterwards for a drink if you must.

Our verdict
The romantic booking in Lisbon. Take the river side, book the rooftop for sunset and let the palace do the rest.
