Parliament, the Abbey, St James's Park and the palace sit within 2 km of each other, and this walk joins them up in one morning. On the 4-hour option you meet your guide in front of the Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square, under the clock tower everyone calls Big Ben, and start inside Westminster Abbey. Rosotravel, the operator, says it is an official partner of the Abbey and takes its groups through the group entrance with skip-the-line tickets; the guide then leads you through the nave, the cloisters and the royal chapels, past the Coronation Chair, the royal tombs and Poets' Corner.

The Abbey is the reason to choose the long option. It is a working church as well as the place where monarchs are crowned, and its own visitor pages say general admission takes in the Cloisters, the Chapter House and the Pyx Chamber as well as the church itself. A guide who knows the building turns a crowded hour into a story you can follow, and the 4-hour option is the only way on this listing to have one inside.

From the Abbey the walk goes on past the Houses of Parliament and through St James's Park to the gates of Buckingham Palace, about 3.2 km in all, the operator says. Big Ben and the palace are seen from outside: the operator states plainly that entry to both is not included. If your morning falls on one of the Household Division's guard change days at the palace, usually at 11:00, you may catch the Changing of the Guard, which the operator offers as a possibility, not a promise.

The 3-hour option is a different shape. It meets at the Horses of Helios sculpture by Piccadilly Circus, walks south through the royal and political quarter to Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, and ends at the Abbey, where the guide leaves you. Your ticket then lets you attend an organ recital, Evensong or a service on your own, subject to the Abbey's schedule; it is a seated service, not a sightseeing visit, and the guide does not come in. Groups on both options are capped at 20, the operator says, and each departure runs in one language: English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Why this one

It is the most reviewed guided Westminster walk in GetYourGuide's search results on 7 November 2026: 4.8 from about 4,100 reviews, from 39.30 euros. The closest rival, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben Tour, also rated 4.8 from about 1,300 reviews, costs from 81.48 euros for 5 hours, adds Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall, and is listed as wheelchair accessible, which this one is not; choose it if step-free access matters. Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Changing of the Guard, rated 4.7 from about 390 reviews at 65 euros, builds the guard ceremony into the route. If you only want the Abbey, the plain Westminster Abbey Entrance Ticket, 38.34 euros on GetYourGuide and rated 4.6 from about 14,800 reviews, comes with the Abbey's multimedia guide; at the door the Abbey charged adults £32 on 7 November 2026.

Booking direct with Rosotravel showed a from price of 49 euros on 7 November 2026, so GetYourGuide's calendar was the cheaper way in that day. After the walk, the river is a few minutes away: our River Thames cruise from Westminster to Greenwich leaves from Westminster Pier. For an evening in the same square, the Candlelight concerts play at Central Hall Westminster, opposite the Abbey, and for royal treasure rather than royal stories, see the Tower and the Crown Jewels.

Good for

  • A first day in London, to see Westminster with someone who can explain it
  • Visitors who want a guided Westminster Abbey visit without queuing for tickets
  • Travellers who enjoy music: the 3-hour option ends with Evensong or an organ recital at the Abbey

Not for

  • Wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility, as the operator says
  • A Sunday Abbey tour: the Abbey is open only for worship on Sundays
  • Visitors who want to go inside Buckingham Palace or Big Ben, which are seen from outside only

When to go

What the weather is like at midday in Parliament Square, month by month, from Open-Meteo's historical weather for 2021 to 2025. Most of the walk is outdoors; on the 4-hour option the Abbey visit is under cover.

Temperature is the median at 12:00 in Parliament Square, with the coldest day in ten after it. Rainy days is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more, modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.

Dress for rain in any month

In the five years we looked at, between 23% (August) and 43% (October) of days had at least 1 mm of rain, and the midday temperature ran from a median of 5.8°C in January to 21.3°C in August. The 4-hour option puts about an hour of the route inside the Abbey, which makes it the better pick from October to March.

From our London hotels

Times are routed to the 4-hour option's meeting point, the Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square: on foot from Sea Containers London and Hazlitt's, about 25 minutes away, and by taxi without traffic from the others. The nearest Tube station is Westminster (Jubilee, District and Circle lines). The 3-hour option meets instead by the Horses of Helios at Piccadilly Circus (Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines). There is no hotel pickup.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides who tell the story well, singled out by name again and again
  • The guided walk through the Abbey, with the group entrance saving time at the door
  • A route that starts under Big Ben and ends through St James's Park at the palace gates

Complaints

  • The Abbey can be crowded inside, so some rooms feel hurried

The catch

  1. Pick the option that fits your day

The Abbey is open only for worship on Sundays, the Abbey says, so the guided visit inside belongs to the 4-hour option from Monday to Saturday. The 3-hour option ends at the Abbey for a service instead: the Abbey's services page lists sung Evensong most days and organ recitals on some, with the times.

What to do. For the inside of the Abbey, book the 4-hour option on a weekday or Saturday; on a Sunday, take the 3-hour option and stay for the music.

  2. Two different meeting points

The 4-hour option meets at the Churchill statue in Parliament Square; the 3-hour option meets at the Horses of Helios on Haymarket, by Piccadilly Circus, about 2 km away. The operator says there are no refunds for late arrivals.

What to do. Check which meeting point is on your ticket and arrive 10 minutes early, as the operator asks.

  3. Leave the big bag at the hotel

The operator says not to bring large bags, backpacks or prams, and there is nowhere to leave them; the Abbey also runs security checks on entry.

What to do. Carry a small bag with an umbrella and water, and wear comfortable shoes for about 3.2 km.

  4. Services take priority over sightseeing

Westminster Abbey is a working church, and its own pages say it can close at short notice and that service times may change. On the 3-hour option, entry to a service depends on the Abbey's arrangements on the day.

What to do. Check the Abbey's services page the day before, and keep noise down inside, as the operator asks.

  5. The palace and Big Ben are outside views

The operator states that entry to Buckingham Palace and Big Ben is not included. The palace's State Rooms open only in summer, from 9 July to 27 September in 2026, the Royal Collection Trust says.

What to do. If the State Rooms matter to you, plan a separate summer visit with a Royal Collection Trust ticket.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace guided walk

Is Westminster Abbey open on Sundays?

Only for worship. The Abbey's visitor page says it is open for services on Sundays, so a guided sightseeing visit is a Monday to Saturday plan; on a Sunday the 3-hour option, with Evensong or an organ recital, fits better.

What is the difference between the 3-hour and 4-hour options?

The 4-hour option meets in Parliament Square and includes a skip-the-line ticket and a guided visit inside Westminster Abbey. The 3-hour option meets at Piccadilly Circus, ends at the Abbey and gives you free independent entry to an organ recital, Evensong or a service, without the guide.

How much is a Westminster Abbey ticket?

At the door on 7 November 2026 the Abbey charged £32 for adults, £29 for over-65s and students, £14 for children aged 6 to 17, and nothing for under-6s, with a multimedia guide included.

Can you go inside Big Ben or Buckingham Palace on this tour?

No. Both are seen from outside, and the operator says entry is not included. Buckingham Palace's State Rooms open to visitors in summer only; in 2026 that was from 9 July to 27 September, the Royal Collection Trust says.

Will we see the Changing of the Guard?

Perhaps. The guard changes at Buckingham Palace on set days, usually at 11:00, as listed on the Household Division's calendar. The operator says you might catch it on selected mornings, but the tour does not wait for it.

Where does the Westminster Abbey tour meet?

The 4-hour option meets in front of the Winston Churchill statue in Parliament Square, near Westminster Tube station. The 3-hour option meets by the Horses of Helios sculpture on Haymarket at Piccadilly Circus.

Is the tour suitable for children and wheelchair users?

Children who can walk about 3.2 km are welcome, though prams have limited access to the Abbey. The operator says the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
