Where to eat at and around Dar Rhizlane

Dar Rhizlane's own table is Le Mimouna, an inventive Moroccan kitchen built on seasonal produce, in a room of brown zellige, leather and wood: tagine, couscous and pastilla alongside seasonal Italian dishes, with international cooking served by the pool in good weather. There is a wine list of Moroccan and international bottles and a bar, and outside guests can book. Hivernage itself is the city's district of hotel restaurants and dinner shows rather than street food, and five of the six places below are 5 to 9 minutes on foot along the avenues, the sixth a 3-minute taxi. Nobu's rooftop and Palais Jad Mahal are 13 minutes away, and the Medina's tables are a taxi ride.

  • L'Épicurien

    5 min walk

    Restaurant-lounge with a live band · €€€

Five minutes away, in the Es Saadi resort: a restaurant-lounge in a decor out of time, with a live band and artists on stage every night. The cooking is international with French and Mediterranean influences, but the reason to go is the evening rather than the plate, and the Casino de Marrakech and the Theatro club are in the same resort for anyone who wants to carry on. Come late and dressed for it, and book a table, especially at the weekend; groups of more than ten are best booked by phone.

  • Le Saadi

    8 min walk

French classics and Moroccan dishes, since 1966 · €€€

The Es Saadi hotel's dining room, open since 1966. The menu is classic French with Moroccan specialities and seasonal dishes, and much of the theatre happens at the table: sole meunière filleted in front of you, flambéed dishes and carving. Start with the foie gras briouats with caramelised apples, honey and cider vinegar, then the Chateaubriand with béarnaise. There is an open-air terrace, weather permitting. Lunch 12:30 to 15:00, dinner 19:30 to 23:00.

  • French bakery for breakfast and coffee · €

The French bakery's Marrakech shop, in the Menara Mall on Avenue Mohammed VI, eight minutes on foot along the avenue. It is the easy answer to a morning away from the hotel's breakfast menu, or a coffee and a croissant on the way into town: viennoiserie, bread and pastries in the PAUL style, quick and familiar rather than local. Check the opening time before planning an early start, and go back to the Medina for Moroccan pastries.

  • Moroccan fine dining on a palace top floor · €€€€

On the top floor of the Es Saadi Palace, in the same resort: a room of carved stone and sculpted plaster lace, with a panoramic view over the pool, the gardens and the lights of the city, and a large salon and two terraces for a drink before dinner. The menu brings back forgotten traditional dishes of Moroccan cooking, which makes it the place nearby for a serious Moroccan dinner without a show. Open every evening from 19:00 to 23:00; book ahead.

  • Comptoir Darna

    9 min walk

Moroccan and Mediterranean dinner with a show · €€€

Nine minutes away on Avenue Echouhada, one of Hivernage's dinner-and-show houses: Moroccan and Mediterranean cooking in a restaurant, a terrace under the stars and a patio, with oriental dancing, live music and DJs as the evening goes on. Order the pastilla, the couscous royal or the lobster ravioli, and a smoking oriental old fashioned at the bar. Every evening from 19:00 to 01:00, the patio and club until 03:00. The dress code is smart casual: no sportswear, shorts, flip-flops, or sandals for men.

  • L'Orangerie

    3 min by car

Moroccan and French cooking with an Atlas view · €€€

The gourmet restaurant of the Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa, a 3-minute taxi or an 11-minute walk east, with a terrace that looks towards the Atlas Mountains. The cooking joins Moroccan flavours and French cuisine on local seasonal produce, which suits a quieter dinner than the shows down the road. Book, and ask for the terrace on a clear evening for the mountains. In the same Sofitel, So Lounge serves Asian food to live bands, dance shows and DJ sets for a louder night.
