What we looked for

Our ten Marrakech hotels run from about €205 a night to about €2,300, and the famous names sit at the top. Value here means a house that gives you the things people come for, a patio, a pool, a hammam and a good breakfast, without the palace price. Both of these do.

Three things decide what you really pay. The season: spring, roughly mid-February to May, is the dearest stretch, and July and August, with afternoon highs near 37°C, are the cheapest. What the rate includes: breakfast is in the price at most of the ten, but not at every one, and at Dar Rhizlane you should check whether your rate includes breakfast. And the city tourist tax, charged per person per night at the hotel. Choose Dar Kandi to wake in the Medina, and Dar Rhizlane for a garden, a quiet base and a taxi to the door.

Dar Kandi

Medina, Marrakech

Dar Kandi gives you a Medina riad of real standard at the lowest price in our edit, from about €205 a night with breakfast for two. All six rooms are suites with a king-size bed, from 28 m² to 41 m², around a patio planted with trees and a fountain, in a 1915 house finished in tadelakt, Fes zellige and Venetian stucco. Above them are three roof terraces, one with the pool and loungers, and the house has its own hammam. It is also in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel selection.

The address saves money too: Le Jardin Secret is 9 minutes on foot and the Ben Youssef Madrasa 12, so the souks need no taxi. Lunch, dinner and the hammam are paid extras, booked ahead, and the city tax is €2.50 a person a night, paid at the riad.

Dar Rhizlane

Hivernage, Marrakech

Dar Rhizlane is the lowest price among our ten outside the Medina, from about €295, and it gives you a house rather than a big hotel: a palace-style building of 2001 behind a wrought-iron gate on Avenue du Président Kennedy, set in water gardens of lilies and papyrus, grapefruit trees and palms. Every room opens onto an Andalusian garden or a flower-filled terrace. There is an outdoor pool in the garden, a traditional hammam with treatment rooms, a gym and a bar.

It also gives you a reason to stay in for dinner. Le Mimouna cooks inventive Moroccan dishes with seasonal produce, served by the pool in good weather, and the hotel runs cooking classes in its own kitchen. A taxi drives up to the door, and Place de Foucauld beside Jemaa el-Fna is about 5 minutes away on clear roads, nearer 15 in heavy traffic.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Marrakech

What does a good hotel in Marrakech cost?

Among our ten, from about €205 a night for two at Dar Kandi, a six-suite Medina riad with breakfast, to about €2,300 for a private riad at Royal Mansour Marrakech. Dar Rhizlane, a garden house in Hivernage, starts from about €295, and La Mamounia from about €705, room only. Spring is the dearest season; rates fall at most of the ten in July and August, and at some in January and early December.

When is Marrakech cheapest?

July and August are the cheapest months at most of our ten, when afternoon highs average about 37°C. January and early December are cheaper at some. At Dar Kandi a mid-January night in the entry suite was €198, against €245 in April and May and €265 over New Year. At Dar Rhizlane the entry room is cheapest in January in the hotel's 2027 rates. Spring, roughly mid-February to May, costs most.

Is breakfast included in Marrakech hotels?

At most of our ten, yes, but check. Dar Kandi includes breakfast in every rate, served from 08:30 to 11:00 on the patio or the small roof terrace; lunch, dinner and the hammam are extra. At Dar Rhizlane, check whether your rate includes breakfast: it is a set menu, continental or oriental, with free extras such as an egg tajine with khlii. La Mamounia's rates are room only.

Is there a tourist tax in Marrakech?

Yes. Every hotel charges a city tourist tax per person per night, set by its category, and most add it at the hotel rather than in the room rate. Dar Kandi charges €2.50 a person a night, paid at the riad. Dar Rhizlane charges the city tax on top of the room rate at the hotel and does not publish the figure, so ask when you book. Room rates include VAT.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
