New York LaGuardia airport guide

LaGuardia Airport

LaGuardia is the closest of New York's three airports to Manhattan, about eight miles by highway from Midtown, and after a rebuild finished in 2024 it is a very different place from its old reputation: two new terminals, named best in its class in North America three years running in Airports Council International's passenger survey. It handles domestic flights and flights from Canada and the Caribbean that clear US immigration before departure. This is how to get through it quickly.

The 30-second version

LaGuardia is mostly domestic, so there is usually no passport control on arrival. With light bags, take the free Q70 LaGuardia Link bus to Jackson Heights for the subway or Woodside for the LIRR, then $3 by subway or $5.25 off-peak by train. With luggage, take a taxi from the rank: the metered fare to Times Square is $30–52 before tips, tolls and congestion charges, and our nearest hotels are typically 19–28 minutes away. App cars collect you on Level 2 of the Terminal B garage or the inner arrivals lane at Terminal C.

Landing to kerb

Every pick-up point, terminal by terminal
  1. Usually no passport control

Almost all flights into LaGuardia are domestic. Flights from Canada and a few other places, including Bermuda and Nassau, clear US immigration at CBP preclearance before departure, so you land as a domestic passenger and walk straight to baggage claim.

  2. Bags

Terminal B's arrivals level has nine carousels and two oversize belts, with the garage, taxis and car services on the same level.

  3. Find the red uniforms

Port Authority customer service people in red uniforms staff the information centres in arrivals, and know every bus and car option.

  4. The taxi rank

Take a yellow cab only from the official rank outside arrivals. The meter runs from LaGuardia, and the TLC adds a $5 LaGuardia surcharge and a $2 airport access fee for pick-ups, so check the screen shows the standard rate.

  5. App cars

Terminal B: Level 2 of the Terminal B parking garage. Terminal C: the inner lane of arrivals. Follow the Ride App Pick Up signs, not the taxi signs.

  6. The free bus to the subway

The Q70 LaGuardia Link is free and serves Terminals B and C. It runs to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue (E, F, M, R and 7 trains), about 8–13 minutes, and on to Woodside for the LIRR. Tap the same card or phone on the subway and the transfer is free for 2 hours.

  7. Pay with your phone

The subway and buses take contactless bank cards, Apple Pay, Google Wallet and OMNY cards. Subway and local buses are $3.

Kerb to gate

  1. Check in online

LaGuardia does not publish a single arrival time, so work to your airline's bag-drop deadline and give yourself room for the morning peak.

  2. Security in Terminal B

TSA PreCheck is available, with Touchless ID on some airlines. B-FAST Express Pass sells front-of-line security in Terminal B, bought in advance or on arrival, and you scan a QR code at the lane.

  3. Allow for the walk

    By the operator's figures, Terminal B gates 11–31 are 4–6 minutes from security and gates 40–59 6–9 minutes. Terminal C is longer: gates 60–69 are 9–11 minutes, 70–79 5–7, 80–89B 3–5 and 92–98 5–10.

  4. Changing terminals

The free All Terminals Shuttle links B and C around the clock, every 15 minutes at peak and every 20 off-peak. Get dropped at the right terminal and you will not need it.

  5. Where to wait

The lounges are below. Without one, Terminal B's Level 4 food hall is the better place to wait.

The hotel at New York LaGuardia

New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott

For an early flight, a late landing or a long wait: the one we would book.

LaGuardia has no hotel on the airport, so the pick is the full-service Marriott just across the Grand Central Parkway. The shuttle runs through the night, the gym never closes, and a noon check-out gives an unhurried morning before a lunchtime flight.

It is off the airport, so every trip is by shuttle: at the terminal, follow the Hotel Shuttles signs to the pick-up area.

Getting to the terminal

On Ditmars Boulevard, about a mile from the terminals, with a free 24-hour shuttle of about 5 minutes

  • Free airport shuttle, 24 hours
  • 24-hour fitness centre
  • Ditmars Bar & Grill on site
  • Check-out at noon

The catch: no rail link

No. LaGuardia has no train or AirTrain; the link to the subway and the LIRR is the free Q70 bus, which runs through the night (every 20 minutes overnight, every 6–10 minutes by day). It is quick: 8–13 minutes to Jackson Heights and 12–17 minutes to Woodside. The M60 SBS bus ($3) stops at both terminals and runs across Upper Manhattan along 125th Street, handy for the Upper West Side and Harlem.

Insider notes

From Woodside, the LIRR CityTicket to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison is $5.25 off-peak and $7.25 peak; not every train stops at Woodside, so check the board. For the Upper East Side, the Q70 to Jackson Heights and the subway into Manhattan is straightforward.

Shared vans also run from the airport to Manhattan, including Uber's shared shuttle to Midtown, the West Village and the World Trade Center, booked in the Uber app.

Travelling with children

Terminal B has play areas, family restrooms and nursing rooms, and lactation pods are marked on the airport map. With car seats and bags, a taxi or pre-booked driver saves the bus and subway changes, and our nearest hotels are under 30 minutes away by road.

Step-free and assistance

Book wheelchair help with your airline, and TSA Cares (+1 855 787 2227) at least 72 hours ahead for help through security. Free Sunflower lanyards are handed out at the Terminal B Guest Experience desk and the information centres in Terminals B and C. Terminal C has a sensory room on Level 3, airside, and Terminal B lends sensory bags at its Level 3 desks. Pet relief areas are in both terminals.

Art worth looking up for

Terminal B commissioned four major works through the Public Art Fund, by contemporary artists, plus a water feature. Terminal C has works by six Queens artists chosen with the Queens Museum, 34 lenticular panels above security and a 238-foot digital wall in check-in.

Delays and your rights

There is no fixed delay compensation in the US. Under the Department of Transportation's 2024 rule, if your airline cancels or makes a significant change of 3 hours or more on a domestic flight and you decline the alternative, you are owed an automatic cash refund, within 7 business days for card payments.

Getting to our ten hotels

LaGuardia is the closest airport by road to most of our hotels: The William Vale is about 19 minutes, The Plaza 22 and The Carlyle 25. The airport has no hotel of its own, but for an early flight the LaGuardia Airport Marriott is about a mile away, with a free 24-hour shuttle of about 5 minutes. The transfers page has every option, timed and priced, for each hotel.
