Best value hotels in Paris

Le Pigalle and Grands Boulevards Experimental, our two four-stars, from about €285 and €260 a night in February. Le Pigalle puts you inside South Pigalle, over the neighbourhood's own café, bar and record library; Grands Boulevards Experimental puts Dorothée Meilichzon's rooms and canopied beds over a glass-roofed courtyard restaurant with Giovanni Passerini's menu.

What we looked for

Our ten Paris hotels run from under €300 a night to over €2,000, and the smart money is not always at the top. Le Pigalle and Grands Boulevards Experimental are the four-stars of the ten, from about €285 and €260 in February against about €1,470 to €2,190 for the four Palaces, and the city tax is lighter too: €8.45 per adult per night against €15.93. They earn their place by where the money goes: design you notice, a restaurant and a bar downstairs worth going to in their own right, a Métro station within two minutes and Gare du Nord five minutes away by taxi.

The trade is floor space, since the entry doubles are 14 to 16 m², so put part of the difference into a bigger room. Then choose by quarter: Le Pigalle for South Pigalle's bars with Montmartre on the hill above, Grands Boulevards Experimental for the theatres, the covered passages and the Opéra.

Le Pigalle

Pigalle, Paris

Le Pigalle earns its place on what comes with the room. Downstairs is the quarter's café, restaurant and bar, all in one room, with its own record library, papers and books on a kiosk, and DJs in the evening. The kitchen opens at 7am, breakfast is served from the menu until 4pm and room service runs around the clock. Festen Architecture dressed the house in parquet, terrazzo and veined marble, and Le Labo toiletries come in all 40 rooms.

The address works hard for the money too. Pigalle Métro, on lines 2 and 12, is 2 minutes from the door, and line 12 runs straight to Madeleine and Concorde; the Sacré-Cœur is a 12-minute climb. Bouillon Pigalle, French classics served fast at low prices, is 2 minutes away, Le Pantruche's €45 set menu 4 and Clavelin's Jura wines 9.

For about €50 more than the entry Pigalle 15 on a February night, it adds 5 to 7 m², two basins and a turntable with records chosen for the room.

Grands Boulevards Experimental

Grands Boulevards, Paris

Grands Boulevards Experimental gives a four-star rate the trappings of a much dearer hotel. Dorothée Meilichzon designed all 50 rooms, with canopied beds and velvet headboards, lime-plastered walls and aged bronze, and each has a coffee machine, a minibar and air conditioning. The hotel holds one MICHELIN Key.

The courtyard restaurant is the clincher: a glass roof that opens on warm days, a bar in the middle and Giovanni Passerini's French-Italian menu from breakfast to dinner, with brunch at €45 on Sundays. Upstairs, The Shed, a small planted rooftop bar, opens every evening of the year, and The Shell warms the ground floor from October to March. Grands Boulevards station, lines 8 and 9, is a minute away, and Bouillon Chartier, with mains from €7, four.

Parisian Eaves

If traffic does not keep you awake, the 32 m² Grand Boulevard suite, over the boulevard, was only €36 more than the Eaves on the same February night.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Paris

How much does a good hotel in Paris cost?

On a low-season night in February, our ten start from about €260 at Grands Boulevards Experimental and €285 at Le Pigalle, the two four-stars. The five-stars start from about €380 at Hôtel Molitor Paris to €595 at Hôtel Madame Rêve, and the four Palaces from about €1,470 at Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Paris to €2,190 at Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel. VAT is in the room price, and every hotel adds the city tax per adult per night: €8.45 at a four-star, €11.70 at a five-star and €15.93 at a Palace. Under-18s pay nothing.

When is the cheapest time to stay in Paris?

It depends on the hotel. At Le Pigalle February is the cheapest month and September the dearest; at Grands Boulevards Experimental August is the cheapest and June the dearest. Across Paris, the fashion weeks and the big trade fairs lift prices: in 2027 men's fashion week runs from 19 to 24 January, women's from 1 to 9 March and 27 September to 5 October, and the Salon de l'Agriculture from 27 February to 7 March. The quietest stretches are early January, once Paris schools go back on 4 January, and the days between 22 February and the Salon.

Are Paris hotel rooms small?

Yes, and the entry rooms here are compact: the Pigalle 15 at Le Pigalle is 14 to 16 m², and the Petit Boulevard at Grands Boulevards Experimental 15 m², with a queen bed under a canopy. The smart spend is a bigger room. A Pigalle 21 adds 5 to 7 m², two basins and a turntable, and the Parisian Eaves is 23 m² under exposed beams, with a bathtub for two or a large shower. For the most space, Le Pigalle's one suite, the Pigalle 35, is 35 m² under the roof, and the 32 m² Grand Boulevard suite has the only sofa bed at Grands Boulevards Experimental.

Is breakfast included at these hotels?

It depends on your rate, so check what yours includes. At Grands Boulevards Experimental breakfast comes with the bed-and-breakfast rates and is served in the courtyard under the glass roof, and every room has a coffee machine. At Le Pigalle breakfast is ordered from the menu until 4pm and paid for dish by dish unless your rate includes it, from €4 for a croissant with the house jam. Next door, Café Pigalle pours espresso from 8.30am on weekdays and 9am at weekends.

Which value hotel is closest to Gare du Nord for the Eurostar?

Both are five minutes by taxi from the Gare du Nord rank, which makes either an easy Eurostar weekend. For flights, a taxi from the Terminal 2 rank at Charles de Gaulle takes about 33 minutes to Le Pigalle and 35 to Grands Boulevards Experimental with the roads clear, at the flat €56 Right Bank fare. Or take the RER B, 25 to 30 minutes into Paris by way of Gare du Nord, on the €14 airport ticket, and finish with the five-minute taxi ride.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
