What we looked for

Central Paris is small enough to cross on foot: the Place de la Concorde to the Louvre Pyramid is 21 minutes and the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés to Notre-Dame 18. So the question is not whether you can walk but which quarter you want outside the door. For the Tuileries and the Louvre, choose the Concorde or the 1st; for Notre-Dame and the Place des Vosges, the Marais; for café terraces and the Luxembourg, Saint-Germain on the Left Bank; for the couture houses, the Faubourg Saint-Honoré; for theatres and covered passages, the Grands Boulevards. The Eiffel Tower and Montmartre sit further out, and Shangri-La Paris and Le Pigalle are the hotels for those two walks.

Every hotel here has a Métro station within five minutes' walk and a Vélib' dock within six, and since November 2024 the 1st to the 4th have been closed to through traffic. Leave the car at home.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Paris

Can you walk everywhere in central Paris?

Most of the centre, yes. From the Place du Palais-Royal, in the 1st, the Louvre Pyramid is 4 minutes on foot, the Palais Garnier 15, the Musée d'Orsay 17 and Notre-Dame 23, and from the Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés the Pyramid is 15 minutes over the river. The Eiffel Tower and Montmartre sit further out, which is why Shangri-La Paris, 13 minutes from the tower, and Le Pigalle, 12 from the Sacré-Cœur, are on this list. For the longer hops, a Métro ticket is €2.55 in 2026, with two hours of changes, and a Navigo day pass €12.30.

Which area of Paris is best for walking to the sights?

For a first visit, the 1st, between the Louvre and Les Halles: Hôtel Madame Rêve is 12 minutes from the Louvre Pyramid and 4 from the Forum des Halles entrance for the Métro and the RER. Close behind is the Marais, where Le Grand Mazarin is 11 minutes from Notre-Dame and Le Pavillon de la Reine 3 from the Maison de Victor Hugo. On the Left Bank, Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Paris is 10 minutes from the Jardin du Luxembourg. Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel and Le Bristol Paris suit the Faubourg Saint-Honoré's shops, and Grands Boulevards Experimental the theatres and covered passages.

Which hotel is closest to the Eiffel Tower on foot?

Shangri-La Paris, on the Chaillot hill across the Seine. The tower's entrances are 13 minutes away over the Pont d'Iéna, the Trocadéro esplanade 7, and the rooms named Eiffel see the tower at an angle, about 600 metres off. From Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel the walk is about 36 minutes. From Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Paris it is about ten minutes' drive with the roads clear, and its Eiffel View balcony rooms on the highest floors see the tower 2.5 km away across the rooftops.

Do you need a car in Paris?

No. Each of the nine is within five minutes' walk of a Métro station and six of a Vélib' dock, and Paris taxis charge flat fares from the airports: €56 from Charles de Gaulle to the Right Bank and €65 to the Left, €45 and €36 from Orly. If you do drive, Le Pavillon de la Reine parks cars up to 1.80 m high free by valet and Hôtel Madame Rêve charges €70 a night, both booked ahead, and Le Bristol Paris parks guests' cars underground for €55 a night. Le Pigalle and Grands Boulevards Experimental have no car park of their own and point drivers to one nearby.

Are any Paris streets car-free on Sundays?

Yes, which makes Sunday a good day for a long walk. From 10am the city closes streets in the Marais to cars, around Le Grand Mazarin and Le Pavillon de la Reine; the Champs-Élysées goes car-free on the first Sunday of the month, 9 minutes from Le Bristol Paris at the Rond-Point; and Montmartre, above Le Pigalle, has car-free Sunday streets, while Rue des Martyrs in South Pigalle closes to cars at weekends. The Marais, Les Halles, Saint-Germain, Montmartre and the Champs-Élysées are international tourist zones, so the shops there may open on Sundays too.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
