Where to eat at and around Palazzo Manfredi

You are on the Celio side of the Colosseum, which is the side the tour groups do not walk to. The hotel's own roof holds a starred restaurant and its courtyard a cocktail bar, each with a condition worth knowing before you go up. And within five minutes on foot, along Via di San Giovanni in Laterano and the streets behind it, is the most useful stretch of ordinary Roman eating anywhere near the amphitheatre.

Palazzo Manfredi: Aroma, laid for dinner above the arena

Aroma

One Michelin starChef Giuseppe Di IorioModern Mediterranean tasting menus on the glazed roof terrace facing the Colosseum

One star in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Italia, confirmed on the guide's own page, with Giuseppe Di Iorio as executive chef since 2010 and Raffaele de Mase resident chef, both named on the current printed menu. A lift takes you from the ground floor to the roof; the inspector's note records that the terrace is enclosed and covered through the winter, so the view works in any month, with the Domus Aurea to the right and the dome of St Peter's in the distance. The summer 2026 card ran four tasting menus, 270 euros for the Corinzio, 230 for the fish Ionico, 210 for the meat Dorico and 190 for the vegetarian Colle Oppio, plus a Smart Menu at 180 for two dishes and a dessert and pairings from 120 drawn from a cellar of more than 600 labels. Lunch Wednesday to Sunday, dinner every night, smart casual, children from ten, and bookings only through the restaurant's own form.

The Court

Chef Matteo ZedMatteo Zed's cocktail courtyard set above the Ludus Magnus excavationDinner only

A walled courtyard between the palazzo and the Grand View residence, open to the Colosseum and the gladiator school on the fourth side, with the bar along one wall and low seating along the other. It is not a drop-in: a reservation is required, under-18s are not admitted, and access carries a minimum of two creations a head, which the current printed drink list prices at 60 euros while the website still says 55, with no exemption published for hotel guests. The card sets house creations at around 30 euros each against straight classics, Negroni, Americano and spritz, and the kitchen sends out Roman-themed plates at 20 to 28 euros. Open 18:00 to 01:30 daily. Come at dusk, when the floodlights on the amphitheatre come up.

Within ten minutes on foot

  • Trattoria and pizzeria, since 1945 · €

The neighbourhood's canteen, two hundred metres from the hotel door: paper tablecloths, the Roman pastas and pizza, at prices that have not noticed the Colosseum. Its own site gives continuous hours, noon to midnight every day, which makes it the answer at four in the afternoon when everything else is shut. Expect a queue at eight and a table turned fast; that is the deal, and the reason it has lasted since 1945.

  • Divin Ostilia

    4 min walk

Wine bar with a Roman kitchen · €€

A small wine bar on the quiet street that runs back from the Colosseum, pouring by the glass with the advice a good enoteca gives, and cooking proper Roman plates to go with it, porchetta among them. It is where to eat when you want to be near the hotel without being in it. A handful of tables outside; book if you want one of them.

  • Li Rioni

Roman pizzeria, evenings only · €

Thin Roman pizza from the oven and fried starters, on the street below the basilica of Santi Quattro Coronati. Its own site gives 19:00 to midnight and Tuesday closed, with a reservation page worth using because the room is small and the locals know it.

Trattoria known for its pasta tasting · €€

In a former convent on the same street as Luzzi, and known for one idea: a divided plate of three pastas, so that you do not have to choose between carbonara, amatriciana and whatever the kitchen is doing that day, sold as a tasting for two or more. Loud, generous and unpretentious, and open long hours.

    Parisian-style bistrot, all day · €€

A belle époque bistrot in the Paris manner, tiled like a Métro station under old glass chandeliers, that runs from lunch through the aperitivo to late. Its listings give Tuesday to Sunday from noon until two in the morning and Monday closed. Come for the room and a drink when you have had enough of trattorias; the kitchen is French-Roman rather than either.

Breakfast

Breakfast is included on every rate and served on the Aroma terrace, with the Colosseum in front of you. It is the one part of the roof that costs a room guest nothing beyond the room, and the reason to set an alarm. Guests describe the selection as narrower than the price suggests, so if you want a second coffee at a counter, Via di San Giovanni in Laterano has a bar every hundred metres.

What to skip

The restaurants with photographed menus on Piazza del Colosseo and along Via dei Fori Imperiali, facing the monument. You would pay for the view twice, once at the hotel and once at the table, and the second time the food would not be worth it. Everything above is three to five minutes in the other direction.

Our verdict

Book it for one thing: the amphitheatre about 190 metres west, framed from a bedroom window, a shower and a rooftop table, in a house of 24 rooms and suites that does breakfast up there for everyone. Pay for a Master Room or a suite, or the view is not yours.
