Which room to book at The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama
The Retreat Deluxe Room Ocean View. It is the same 50 square metres as the entry Citadel Deluxe, but its room card carries the line Access to Retreat Experiences, which is the hotel's name for the calm half of the estate: the Retreat pools, including the Del Mar infinity pool the hotel lists as exclusive to Retreat guests, the afternoon and sunset refreshments, and two garments pressed. The hotel's Retreat page also describes an ocean-view breakfast, but check what your rate includes. Everything below it in the Retreat is a garden view; above it are the family rooms and the suites.

Why this one
The hotel sells 24 categories and only six sizes matter: 50, 60, 80, 90, 100 and 140 square metres, plus the two penthouses. At 50 m² there are seven rooms, three in the Citadel and four in the Retreat, and the floor area is identical on every card. What changes is what comes with the room. The Citadel Deluxe gets a balcony and the main block's pools and bars. The Retreat Deluxe gets a terrace or a balcony, a sofa bed, and the Retreat inclusions the hotel lists on its own page: four pools with adults-only and family options, afternoon and sunset refreshments, yoga and Pilates, an ambassador. The step from Citadel Deluxe to Retreat Deluxe is the whole argument for this hotel, and the Ocean View version is the one where the terrace earns its keep, with the sunset over La Gomera in front of it rather than the garden lane.
Above 50 m² the ladder is about beds and pools rather than views. The 60 m² rooms split into Citadel Junior Suites for couples and Retreat Family Rooms for four; the 80 m² categories are one-bedroom suites in either half, the Retreat versions available garden, ocean, adults-only or with a private pool; the 90 m² adults-only pool suite is the largest one-bedroom suite in the Retreat. The Citadel Family Rooms at 100 m² sleep six in two bedrooms but their cards mark internet as chargeable, so a 140 m² Retreat Two Bedroom Suite with its own pool is the family choice if the budget stretches. The Royal Suite at 598 m² and the Imperial at 950 m² are a different product, at the top of the Citadel with kitchens and, in the Imperial's case, a pool on the terrace.
- Ask for
- Ask for a Retreat room with a terrace opening onto the Retreat pool lane if you want to walk from bed to water, or an upper-tier casita if the unobstructed sunset over La Gomera matters more; the Retreat is four lanes of two-storey casitas, so both exist. Say whether you want the family lanes or the adults-only lanes, because the hotel sells them as separate categories and the wrong one is hard to swap in peak weeks. If you are staying in the Citadel, ask for a high floor on the ocean side and, if quiet matters, away from what the hotel's own rooms page calls the Citadel's daily celebrations, events and live music.
- Avoid
- Avoid the Citadel Resort View rooms if the sea is the point: the card promises a resort view and nothing else, and the Ocean View is a separate category at the same size. Avoid a Retreat room if you need a rollaway, because every Retreat card below the Two Bedroom Suite says rollaway beds are not permitted, and avoid the Adults Only categories with a baby, because they do not permit cribs either. Guests report room air conditioning that will not go below a set temperature and a beach train (the funicular) that is sometimes out of service, leaving a steep path; neither is category-specific, but both are worth asking about before you are allocated a room.
Suites against rooms
Two suites are worth singling out. The Retreat Suite One Bedroom, Adults Only, with Private Pool is 90 m² with its own pool in the adults-only lanes and the full Retreat inclusions, and it is the largest one-bedroom suite in the Retreat; if the point of the trip is not to share a pool, this is where the ladder answers. The other is the Imperial Suite, 950 m² on the hotel's room card and 1,000 on its signature page, two bedrooms on the top floor of the Citadel with a private pool on the terrace and a service kitchen, which is a different holiday altogether.
