Where to eat at and around The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama

You are on a 160-hectare estate on the west coast, ten kilometres from the nearest town centre, and the hotel's own dining page lists ten places to eat and drink inside the gates, from the two-star M.B down to a deli. That is the point of Abama and also the trap: nothing outside the hotel is within ten minutes on foot, not even Melvin on the same estate, so every meal off the Ritz-Carlton's bill needs the car or a taxi. Everything below is a drive of 4 to 16 minutes.

Close by, on foot or by car

  • Berasategui's third table, next door · €€€

Berasategui's third table in Tenerife, after M.B and Txoko at the Ritz-Carlton, at Las Terrazas de Abama on the same estate, and the answer to a Sunday or Monday when M.B is shut: its own site gives dinner Tuesday to Saturday, 18:30 to 21:30, closed Sunday and Monday, and describes the cooking as haute cuisine with the Berasategui seal. The walk from the Citadel is 15 minutes, so take the car or a buggy. Book a day ahead; no swimwear or beach sandals.

  • Clubhouse lunch over the course · €€

The golf clubhouse restaurant on the upper estate, with the course and the ocean below the terrace. Its own page gives breakfast 7:30 to 11:00 and lunch 12:00 to 17:00 every day, and dinner 19:00 to 22:00 Thursday to Monday only, closed Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The useful slot is a late lunch after a round or a morning at the beach, when the Ritz-Carlton's own terraces are full; booking is recommended.

Wine bar for the sunset · €€

The lobby bar of Las Terrazas de Abama, opposite its reception, pouring Canarian, Spanish and international wines with island cheeses, Iberian ham, focaccia and preserves rather than a full menu. Its own page gives 16:00 to 23:00 daily. Go for the sunset over La Gomera and a glass that is not on the Ritz-Carlton bill; it is a drink and a plate, not dinner, so book Melvin in the same building for afterwards.

Seafront rice and fish house · €€

The nearest village restaurant worth the drive, on the seafront at Playa San Juan. Its own site gives 13:00 to 17:00 and 19:00 to 21:30, closed Wednesday and Thursday, with paella on summer Saturdays, and a menu of rice dishes including lobster rice, red tuna, turbot and the fish of the day. This is where to eat fish at a village price after a week of resort menus. Free parking on the street.

Village fish restaurant in Alcalá · €

The plain fish restaurant on Calle de la Plaza in Alcalá, the next village north of Playa San Juan. It has no website, so the hours cannot be confirmed here; guests describe the day's catch shown at the table, filleted and simply cooked, at prices the resort has not heard of, and say it is the place they go back to. Go early for lunch, check the hours locally and take cash in case.

Breakfast

Whether breakfast is in your rate depends on the rate, so check yours: the hotel's own dining page says in one line that breakfast is complimentary for guests and a few lines later that it is available at El Mirador and La Veranda for a fee, which is a hotel selling both room-only and breakfast rates, and guests on room-only rates report paying. Where it is served is clearer. La Veranda in the Citadel does the buffet from 7:30 to 10:30 every day, with the Serenity pool and the golf course in front of it; El Mirador on the cliff opens at 7:30 and is the ocean-view room, which is where the Retreat's ocean-view breakfast is understood to be, though the Retreat page does not name the venue. The nearest alternative is the Atlántico at the golf clubhouse, breakfast 7:30 to 11:00, four minutes by car.

What to skip

The restaurants on the strip at Los Gigantes and along the front at Puerto de Santiago with laminated menus in five languages and a photograph of every dish. You would drive a quarter of an hour to eat worse than the hotel's Beach Club. Codeso is in the same town and is the reason to make the trip.
