Pompeii is about 35 to 45 km from the hotels on the coast, over the mountains, and on public transport it is a journey of two buses or a bus and a train each way. This tour takes that problem away. A driver collects you at your accommodation, the listing naming Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Ravello, Maiori, Vico Equense and Sorrento, and takes you in an air-conditioned van to the archaeological site. The whole outing takes about four and a half hours, door to door.
At the site you go in through a separate entrance on a fast-track ticket, which is in the price, and spend two hours with an official archaeological guide. The operator, Enjoy Pompeii, describes a route past the Basilica, the Forum and the baths and into some of the houses, with Vesuvius, which buried the town in AD 79, standing over the end of the Forum. The group is capped at 10, so you can hear the guide and ask questions. Then the van brings you back to your hotel. Food and drink are not included.
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii's own Pompeii Express ticket costs 20 euros, Pompeii+ with the suburban villas 25, plus a 2-euro booking fee online; under-18s enter free and everyone enters free on the first Sunday of the month. Tickets carry the visitor's name. From 16 March to 14 October entry is in timed morning and afternoon quotas, 20,000 a day in all; from 15 October to 15 March the gates open at 09:00, last entry is at 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00. On this tour the ticket is the operator's job, which is much of what you are paying for: from about 134 euros on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026, the transport, the guide and the ticket in one.
This is the half day, and it is all Pompeii. If you want the volcano as well, our page Pompeii, Vesuvius and a winery lunch from the Amalfi Coast covers the full day, about eight hours, with the crater walk and a tasting.
Why this one
Few Pompeii tours start on the Amalfi Coast itself; most of the big ones leave from Naples or Sorrento. Of the three coast-pickup tours we compared on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026, this one had by far the most reviews: 4.8 from about 120, with the guide scored 4.9, the transport 4.8 and value 4.7, and 90% of English-speaking reviewers giving five stars. The listing named From Positano: Pompeii Guided Tour with Skip the Line is the same kind of trip, five hours, 129 euros and 5.0 from 29 reviews; From Amalfi Coast: Pompeii Guided Tour is 159 euros, 4.9 from 14. The big full-day tour from the other side of the bay, Naples or Sorrento: Full-Day Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius Tour, costs 97.75 euros with 4.7 from about 5,100 reviews, but you have to get yourself to Sorrento first.
If price decides it and you are staying in Positano, you can do Pompeii on your own for about a quarter of the money: the SITA Sud bus to Sorrento, 25 to 50 minutes for 2.50 euros, then the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi, about 36 minutes for 2.80, and a 20-euro ticket, with no guide and a longer day; our Naples to Sorrento train page has the details. If you want Pompeii and Vesuvius in one go, book Pompeii, Vesuvius and a winery lunch from the Amalfi Coast instead.
Good for
- Families who want Pompeii without trains and buses: the van collects you at the hotel
- First-time visitors who want the ruins explained by an archaeologist
- Anyone short of time: back at the hotel in about four and a half hours
Not for
- Travellers on a tight budget: the bus and train from Positano cost under 6 euros each way
- Anyone who wants Vesuvius too: book the full day with the volcano instead
- Wheelchair users: Pompeii's streets are rutted stone and steep in places

Summer quotas, winter hours
From 16 March to 14 October Pompeii admits up to 15,000 people between 09:00 and 13:00 and 5,000 in the afternoon, so the morning is the crowded half. From 15 October to 15 March the last entry is at 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00, which suits a morning or early afternoon start.
From our Amalfi Coast hotels
Drive times are routed from each of our ten hotels to the Porta Marina entrance at Pompeii, with the roads clear; on the mountain roads and the SS163 they are optimistic, and the operator's four and a half hours, two of them inside, allow over an hour each way. The listing names Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello among its pickup towns; for Conca dei Marini, Scala and Minori, ask the operator before you book.

Complaints
The catch
Confirm the pickup point the day before
The listing names the pickup towns but asks you to check availability for the details. On this coast many hotels are reached by steps or sit on narrow lanes a van cannot enter.
What to do. Put your hotel's name in the booking, then confirm the exact pickup spot and time with the operator the day before.
Pompeii is hot in summer, and open to the sky
In the five years we looked at, the median temperature at the site at 14:00 was 30.4°C in July and 30.3°C in August, with clear skies on two days in three in July.
What to do. From June to September take a morning start, a hat, sun cream and water; spring and October are easier.
Bring ID, and travel light
Pompeii's tickets carry each visitor's name, and the park does not admit suitcases or bags larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm.
What to do. Carry passports or ID for everyone and a small day bag; leave the rest in the van or at the hotel.
In winter, the gates close early
From 15 October to 15 March the last entry to Pompeii is at 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00, and it is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
What to do. Between November and mid-March choose a morning start; the calendar shows the times on offer.
Two hours is an introduction, not the whole city
The guided visit covers the Forum, the Basilica, the baths and some houses. The suburban villas, among them the Villa of the Mysteries, are on the separate Pompeii+ ticket.
What to do. If the villas matter to you, ask the operator whether they can be added, or come back on your own with a Pompeii+ ticket.
