Pompeii and Vesuvius sit side by side across the mountains from the Amalfi Coast, and doing both on your own in one day means buses, trains and two timed tickets. This tour hands all of that to someone else. A van collects you from your accommodation in one of seven towns the listing names, Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara and Ravello, and the day runs for about eight hours, door to door, in a group of 12 at most.

Pompeii comes first. You go in through a separate fast-track entrance and spend two hours with an archaeological guide. The operator, Enjoy Pompeii, lists the Basilica, the Forum, the baths, a bakery and houses, in the town buried by Vesuvius in AD 79. Then the tour heads up the volcano. The crater path, the park's trail number 5, the Gran Cono, starts from the car park at 1,000 metres above Ercolano and climbs on gravel to the rim. The park runs it on strict rules: groups of 20 go up every 10 minutes, guides from the volcano's permanent watch accompany every group above 1,000 metres, and the shorter out-and-back route may take no more than two hours. The high path round the north and east of the summit stays closed.

The last stop is lunch with a wine tasting at Casa Setaro, a family winery in Trecase inside the Vesuvius National Park, which grows its vines ungrafted in the volcanic soil and makes Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio. Then the van takes you back to your hotel.

On GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026 it cost from about 254 euros a person, with transport, the Pompeii and Vesuvius tickets, the guide, lunch and the tasting all included; only tips are extra. Bought yourself, the tickets come to about 30 euros: 20 for Pompeii's own site and 10 for the crater path, which is sold online only. The rest of the money buys the van, the guide, the lunch and someone else juggling two timed entries across the Naples traffic.

Why this one

Most Pompeii and Vesuvius days leave from Naples or Sorrento. Of the full-day tours that collect on the Amalfi Coast itself, this one had by far the most reviews on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026: 4.7 from about 160, with the guide scored 4.9, the transport 4.8 and value 4.6, and a bestseller label. The nearest rivals are newer and smaller: Pompeii - Vesuvius & Wine from the Amalfi Coast, All-Inclusive costs 279 euros for nine hours, rated 4.9 from 35 reviews; Pompeii-Vesuvius & Winery All Inclusive Tour From Positano costs 279, rated 4.8 from 17; and From Positano: Pompeii and Vesuvius Small-Group Tour costs 229 for seven hours without the winery, rated 4.5 from 13.

The big tours from the other side of the bay cost far less: From Naples: Pompeii and Vesuvius Day Trip with Pizza Lunch was 60 euros, 4.8 from about 10,200 reviews, and Naples or Sorrento: Full-Day Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius Tour 97.75 euros, 4.7 from about 5,100. They suit you if you are staying in Naples or Sorrento; from the coast you would first have to get there, and back. If Pompeii alone is enough, book our half-day page, Pompeii guided tour from the Amalfi Coast, run by the same operator: about four and a half hours with an archaeologist, from about 134 euros.

Good for

  • First visits that want Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day, without driving or trains
  • Families with children who can manage a gravel climb: the group is small and the day is organised
  • Anyone who wants lunch and wine on the volcano that buried Pompeii

Not for

  • Anyone who only wants Pompeii: the half-day tour is shorter and about 120 euros cheaper
  • People with pre-existing medical conditions, as the listing says
  • Tight budgets: tours from Naples or Sorrento cost from 60 euros, if you can get there

Modelled from historical weather (Open-Meteo, ERA5) for the Pompeii site. Temperature is the median at 13:00, with the coldest day in ten after it; clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 13:00; rain, the share of days with 1 mm or more.

Pack a layer for the crater

Modelled the same way for the start of the crater path at 1,000 metres, at 15:00, the median temperature is about 7°C lower than at Pompeii at 13:00, 23.8°C in July against 30.7°C, and 6.4°C in January against 13.1°C. Gusts over 50 km/h blow on more than one day in four in January, and on one day in ten or fewer from June to September.

From our Amalfi Coast hotels

Drive times are routed from each of our ten hotels to the Porta Marina entrance at Pompeii, the first stop, with the roads clear; on the mountain roads and the SS163 they are optimistic. The listing names Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara and Ravello as pickup towns; Borgo Santandrea is in the comune of Amalfi. For Conca dei Marini and Scala, ask the operator before you book.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Archaeologist guides at Pompeii who bring the town to life
  • Drivers who are on time and a day where every ticket is taken care of
  • Seeing the ruins and then standing on the volcano that buried them, in a single day

Complaints

  • Changes of van and some waiting between the three stops

The catch

  1. The volcano runs to the clock

Vesuvius tickets are sold online only, in 10-minute slots of 50, and the gate admits you up to 120 minutes either side of your time. The operator says that once a slot has passed, entry is no longer possible, and that it plans the day around traffic to make the slot.

What to do. Be ready at the pickup point on time: the whole day is built around the Vesuvius slot.

  2. Orange weather alerts close the crater

The Vesuvius park closes the ticket office and the crater path automatically on days when Campania's civil protection issues an orange weather alert or higher. Tickets for closed slots are refunded by the park.

What to do. Check the forecast the day before, and ask the operator what replaces the crater if it is shut.

  3. It is cooler and windier at the top

Modelled for the start of the crater path at 1,000 metres, at 15:00, the median temperature is about 7°C below Pompeii at 13:00, 15.7°C in October and 6.4°C in January. The path is loose gravel, and the park asks for suitable shoes.

What to do. Wear trainers or walking shoes and carry a light layer, even when the coast is warm.

  4. Leave the backpack at the hotel

The listing does not allow backpacks, and Pompeii's tickets carry each visitor's name.

What to do. Take a small shoulder bag with water and ID for everyone in the booking.

  5. Winter days are short

From 15 October to 15 March the last entry to Pompeii is at 15:30, and from November to February the last access to the Vesuvius crater is at 15:00.

What to do. In the cooler months take the earliest start in the calendar, so both stops fit before the gates close.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Pompeii, Vesuvius and a winery lunch from the Amalfi Coast

Can you see Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day from the Amalfi Coast?

Yes. This tour collects you from your hotel in Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara or Ravello and does both, with a winery lunch, in about eight hours.

Are the Pompeii and Vesuvius tickets included?

Yes. The listing includes skip-the-line entry to Pompeii and to Vesuvius. Bought yourself, Pompeii costs 20 euros and the Vesuvius crater path 10 euros, the second sold online only, in timed slots.

How hard is the walk up Vesuvius?

The crater path starts at a car park 1,000 metres up and climbs on gravel to the rim. The park allows up to two hours for the out-and-back walk and asks walkers to wear suitable shoes.

What happens if Vesuvius is closed?

The park shuts the crater path on days when the Campania civil protection issues an orange weather alert or higher. The listing does not say what the operator does then, so ask before you travel.

Which winery does the tour visit?

The listing names Casa Setaro, a family winery in Trecase inside the Vesuvius National Park, which makes Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio. Lunch and the tasting are included.

Should I book the half day or the full day?

Book this full day, about eight hours, for Pompeii, the crater and a winery lunch. For Pompeii alone, the half-day tour from the coast takes about four and a half hours and costs from about 134 euros.

Is the Pompeii and Vesuvius tour suitable for children?

For children who can walk uphill on gravel, yes: the group is capped at 12 and the day is organised for you. Under-6s enter Vesuvius free at the official price, but the tour is priced per person, so check the child rate in the calendar.
