Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)

Gran Canaria Airport (Gando)

Gran Canaria Airport sits at Gando on the east coast, 18 km from Las Palmas and, Aena says, 25 km from the main resort area in the south, which puts every one of our hotels within an hour. It is a single terminal, open 24 hours, that handled 15.8 million passengers in 2025. Here is how to get through it smoothly in both directions, and how to spend the wait well.

The 30-second version

On arrival, taxis are outside on Floor 0, but the buses leave from Floor 1, the departures level, so go up one floor: Global's line 60 reaches Las Palmas in 20 to 30 minutes for €2.30 to €2.95, and line 66 the Maspalomas lighthouse in 40 minutes for €4.05. Flying home, the Fast Lane costs €11.10 and runs from 05:00 to 22:00. The Galdós lounge, on Floor 2 of Zone C, is before passport control, so it works for UK flights too; leave time for the queue after it.

Every pick-up point, terminal by terminal
  1. Passport control, if you come from outside Schengen

Flights from the UK and other non-Schengen countries go through passport control. Under the EU's Entry/Exit System, now being rolled out, you may be asked on your first entry to register fingerprints and a photo at a booth before the border desk; it is free, the record lasts three years, and children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted. UK adults may be directed to e-gates where they are working.

  2. Baggage reclaim

Bags come out on Floor 0. The tourist information desk is in the baggage reclaim hall itself, a good moment to pick up a map or ask about buses while you wait.

  3. The arrivals hall and meeting point

The meeting point is in the arrivals hall on Floor 0, with Aena's information desk nearby: the place to find a pre-booked driver. Café Pans in the arrivals hall serves coffee and pastries from 08:00 to 19:00 (to 18:00 on Sundays).

  4. Taxis

The signed rank is outside on Floor 0. Taxis run on the Canary interurban meter: €3.85 flag fall and €1.35 a km from 06:00 to 22:00, €4.25 and €1.55 at night and on holidays, plus €2.10 from the airport. By our reckoning that is about €35 to central Las Palmas and €53 to the Maspalomas lighthouse by day.

  5. Buses: go up to Floor 1

Every Global bus leaves from Floor 1, Departures. Line 60 runs to Las Palmas every 30 minutes from 06:15, then hourly to 23:15: 20 minutes to San Telmo (€2.30) and 30 to Santa Catalina (€2.95). Line 66 runs hourly at half past, 07:30 to 20:30, to Playa del Inglés (€3.50) and the Faro de Maspalomas (€4.05) in 40 minutes. Line 91 runs hourly to Puerto de Mogán in an hour for €6.80.

  6. Car hire

Aena lists desks for Avis, Cicar, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, OK Mobility, Sixt and TopCar on the ground floor, in the arrivals halls; other firms run a free shuttle to a depot outside. Our car hire page has prices, deposits and the catches.

Kerb to gate

  1. Getting to the terminal

Check-in and departures are on Floor 1, where the buses stop. Line 60 leaves Santa Catalina for the airport every 30 minutes from 05:15, and line 66 leaves the Faro de Maspalomas hourly from 06:30 to 19:30.

  2. Check-in and bag drop

Your airline sets its bag-drop deadline. If you need assistance, request it at least 48 hours ahead; Aena suggests arriving two and a half hours before departure and being at the meeting point at least two hours before.

  3. Security, and the Fast Lane

Aena's Fast Lane gives priority at security for €11.10, valid for three months from purchase, from 05:00 to 22:00. Children aged 0 to 5 go through free, and it is included for business-class passengers and some airline loyalty cards. Scan the QR code, then your boarding pass, at the gate.

  4. The lounge, then passport control

The Galdós lounge is after security and before passport control, on Floor 2 of Zone C. If you are flying to the UK or another non-Schengen country, leave it in good time: gov.uk advises allowing extra time on departure while the Entry/Exit System beds in.

  5. Where to wait

Most of the cafés, the bars and Dehesa Santamaría, the tapas bar, are on Floor 1 airside. Deli&Cia is open 24 hours, and Foodies sells Canarian food and drink to take home until 21:30. Wi-fi is free: join 'Airport Free Wifi Aena' and confirm your email.

Insider notes

The buses leave from Floor 1, the departures level, not from arrivals: go up one floor after baggage reclaim.

Line 66 runs direct to the Faro de Maspalomas, where three of our hotels are 3 to 7 minutes' walk from the bus station. It runs hourly at half past, 07:30 to 20:30, so after that it is a taxi or a driver.

Line 60 is the late one: from the airport every 30 minutes to 20:45, then at 21:15, 22:15 and 23:15.

The Galdós lounge is before passport control. On a UK flight, give yourself time for the passport queue after it.

Travelling with children

Children aged 0 to 5 go through the Fast Lane and into the Galdós lounge free; those aged 6 to 10 pay €21.25 for the lounge. The pharmacy is on Floor 1 before security, open 06:00 to 19:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends. For the drive south, a pre-booked driver or a hire car avoids waiting for a bus with tired children; the Maspalomas hotels are 31 to 32 minutes away.

Step-free travel and assistance

Aena's assistance service meets you at signposted points in the car park, on the arrivals forecourt and in check-in. Request it at least 48 hours ahead through your airline or travel agent, Aena's website or app, or on +34 91 321 10 00 (07:00 to midnight). Aena recommends arriving two and a half hours before departure and reaching the meeting point at least two hours before.

Delays and your rights

Flights from Gran Canaria fall under EU rules. Arrive three hours or more late and you can claim €250 on flights up to 1,500 km, €400 on longer flights within the EU and other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 beyond (€300 if you arrive three to four hours late), unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances. After a delay of two to four hours, depending on distance, the airline owes you meals and drinks, and a hotel if you are moved to the next day.

A long wait or an early flight

Yes, every day of the year, and Deli&Cia airside is open around the clock. For a dawn flight, Café de Indias opens at 05:00 and the Fast Lane at 05:00; the Galdós lounge opens at 06:00. Lost property, on Floor 1, is open on weekdays from 09:00 to 14:00. Our nearest hotel, Hotel Veintiuno in Las Palmas, is about 20 minutes away by road.

Getting to our ten hotels

Our three Las Palmas hotels are 20 to 25 minutes away by road; the four in Maspalomas and Meloneras 31 to 32, with line 66 ending at the Faro de Maspalomas bus station close to three of them; Salobre 34; Cordial Mogán Playa 43; and the Parador at Cruz de Tejeda, in the mountains, 52. Our transfers page has the bus, taxi, transfer and hire-car options for each.
