The take on Hotel Veintiuno
Veintiuno is an 18th-century Canarian colonial house at 21 Calle Espíritu Santo, a pedestrian street in Vegueta, the quarter where Las Palmas began in 1478. It keeps its inner courtyard, old stone walls, wooden shutters and 19th-century encaustic tiles. Alexandra Adeler and Paco Monzón came home from Norway to buy and restore it, and opened in June 2018 with 11 rooms; it has had 17 since 2023, and Airnest has run it since 2026. The Canary Islands register lists it as a hotel emblemático, the category for hotels in historic buildings, so it has no official star rating. Guests must be 16 or over; groups are not taken.
The old house shows in every room: a stone wall, a beam, a tiled floor, set against contemporary furniture and natural fabrics. Six double categories run from the 19 m² Comfort Economy Interior to the Premium at the front, about 35 m² with a separate sitting area and a view of the cathedral, plus a single of 16 m². The split that matters is inside or outside. Interior rooms open onto the courtyard or a light well, silent and away from the street; exterior rooms have a balcony or a window onto the street and more daylight, though some are on the ground floor, so ask for the first floor. A lift runs to every floor, the roof included.
The money buys the roof and the address. Upstairs are a plunge pool, loungers in sun and shade and an honesty bar for wine, beer and spirits, with the whole south side of the cathedral of Santa Ana, both towers and the dome, about 50 metres away across the rooftops. It is open to residents from nine in the morning to eleven at night, with no loud music. Breakfast is made to order from a short seasonal menu, not a buffet: bakery bread, majorero cheese and papaya, from eight to half past ten inside or on the terrace, included or not depending on the rate. A June night for two starts at about €85, and a Deluxe Exterior at about €125.
The trade is the one a small city hotel asks for. There is no restaurant, room service, spa or car park: you can drive to the door to unload, and the Mercado de Vegueta public car park is five minutes' walk. The sand is a ride away, about 12 minutes by taxi to Las Canteras, or city bus line 1 from the Teatro stop. Book it for three or four nights of museums, market and tapas bars, or as the city half of a trip that ends in the south. For a week by a pool it is the wrong hotel.
