The take on Maristel Hotel & Spa
Estellencs is one of the smallest villages on Mallorca's west coast, stone houses on the slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana with the sea about 150 metres below and a kilometre away. The Maristel stands in the village, two minutes' walk from the parish church. It is a four-star of 56 rooms for guests aged 16 and over, with a spa, a bistro, a small outdoor pool and terraces that look down the valley to the sea. It closes for the winter and reopens in early March.
What separates the ten room categories is the view. The basic Cosy Room is a twin of 21 to 25 m², and four more look over the village or towards the mountains. The sea begins with Sunset Hideaway, 22 to 24 m², which looks over the village roofs to the sea, and Dreaming Sea, about 25 m² behind big bay windows on the valley and the sea, with a 210 cm king bed and a balcony in almost every room. Above them sit the Sea Junior Suite, the 40 m² Suite Terrace, with views of the sea and the valley, and the 80 m² Suite Penthouse at the top of the building, with a 30 m² private terrace over the village, the mountains and the sea.
The reason it is here is what the money buys: on a May weekday the sea-view rooms start at about 160 euros a night, and that buys the wild side of the island. There is a pool and bar that look over the village roofs to the sea, a terrace for drinks at sunset, and a spa with a heated indoor pool with bubble loungers, a Finnish sauna and a Turkish bath. The bistro, under the chef José Luis Adán, runs a five-course tasting menu. Walkers have the GR221 Dry Stone Route from the door, and cyclists a bike workshop.
The trade is that this is a village hotel, not a resort. The coast road runs below the sea-view rooms, and the sea is a narrow slice at the foot of the valley rather than a panorama. There is no car park of its own, only the street and the village's free car parks, which can fill up in season. The sea is for looking at more than swimming in: Cala d'Estellencs is a cove of pebbles and large rocks, a 23-minute walk down a steep lane. Book it for a quiet week of walking, cycling or reading by the pool, pay for a sea-view room, and check what your rate includes: breakfast and spa access are not in every one.

Car hire in Mallorca
TIB's 202 bus to Palma stops at the door, but the rest of the coast is a drive, and cars go in the village's free car parks 100 to 200 metres away.

Maristel Hotel & Spa: the room to book, Dreaming Sea
The Cosy Room at the bottom of the ladder is a twin whose window may face a courtyard or a wall, four other categories look over the village, a garden or the mountains, and Sunset Hideaway sees the sea past the town; Dreaming Sea is the room sold on the sea, with large double-glazed bay windows over the valley to the sea, a 210 cm king bed and a balcony in almost every room. On a May weekday it costs roughly 40 to 60 euros a night more than the entry room, and the sea is the reason to stay here.
- Ask for
- Ask for the king-size bed and a balcony when you book: the category also comes with two single beds, and almost all, not all, of the rooms have a balcony.
- Avoid
- The Cosy Room unless you only need a bed, and Junior Suite City, which trades the view for space and looks over the village.

Where Maristel Hotel & Spa is, and getting there
The hotel stands on Carrer d'Eusebi Pascual, the stretch of the Ma-10 coast road that runs through Estellencs, two minutes' walk from the parish church, with the TIB 202 bus stop to Palma, by way of Banyalbufar and Esporles, at the door. The village is small and steep, all stone lanes and terraces. Cala d'Estellencs, a cove of pebbles and large rocks, is 1.7 km away and 150 metres lower: 23 minutes on foot going down, 5 minutes by car. Banyalbufar is 10 minutes up the coast by car and Valldemossa 33 minutes. Palma Cathedral is 48 minutes away and Palma airport 49 minutes, the last part on winding mountain road, so a hire car is the way to see the coast. There is no hotel car park. Free public car parks in the village are 100 to 200 metres from the door, with charging points for electric cars.
