Castell Son Claret is a possessió, a Mallorcan country estate, whose manor house took on the look of a castle in 1888. The land was five farms joined in 1450 and later named for its owner Jaume Claret, and the oldest part of the house dates from about 1700. The rebuild of 1888 gave the front its two crenellated towers and added a chapel, now the Castell Bar, and a sundial dated that year, which still hangs above the tables of Sa Clastra. The estate covers 132 hectares of Tramuntana foothills outside Es Capdellà, and you arrive along a palm avenue nearly 200 metres long, planted for the hotel, with the castle front lined up at its far end. Christine and Klaus-Michael Kühne restored it and opened it as a hotel in May 2013.
There are 43 rooms and suites, 22 in the castle and 21 in the former stables and in newer houses in the gardens. The two Estate Doubles, the cheapest, are 25 m² and look into the historic courtyard. Deluxe Doubles are 37 m² under wooden beams, on three floors of the castle, with windows that look outwards. The two Tower Suites sit inside the towers on the first floor, each with a 35 m² balcony, and five Pool Suites in the gardens have a private pool of 10 m², unheated. Breakfast is included in the room rate, at Olivera or on its terrace when the weather allows.
You book it for a castle evening. Sa Clastra, Mallorcan for the courtyard, is the castle's gastronomic restaurant, with a dining room inside and tables out in the courtyard when the weather allows. It has held a MICHELIN star since the 2024 guide. Jordi Cantó cooks one tasting menu built on the island's winds, in a long or a short version, at 205 euros a head in 2026. By day there is an outdoor pool beyond the Olivera terrace, which looks over the valley to the mountains, a spa with a hammam and an indoor pool, and olive oil from the estate's own trees.
The trade is the calendar and the car. The hotel closes from mid-November to mid-March and sells 2027 stays of three nights or more. The nearest beaches, at Peguera, are 15 minutes by car, public transport out here is thin, and the castle is run for calm, with no one under 14 in the spa or at Sa Clastra. Book it between mid-March and October for three or four slow days of countryside and one long dinner at Sa Clastra, out in the courtyard if the evening is warm, with a hire car for the coast.
