The short answer

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit on Wednesday 2 December 2026 and stays up until 9 January 2027, lit all day on Christmas Day. Macy's windows open on 19 November, Saks Fifth Avenue's windows and light show on 23 November, and Bryant Park's free rink and Holiday Shops are already open.

For the evening, book LUMINISCENCE inside St Patrick's Cathedral, where a live orchestra and choir play the Christmas Edition on 16 nights from 19 November to 2 January, from $104.64 with fees for a Gold seat. To sleep within a walk of all of it, The Plaza is 13 minutes on foot from the tree and 11 from St Patrick's.

What only this guide tells you

One calendar, and one walking map

Christmas in New York is usually sold as a list of sights. We put the dates on them instead: each free event with its 2026 date from the organiser or, where the organiser's site blocked our reader, from the press reporting its announcement, and every Fever evening between 18 November and 2 January with its date, start time and cheapest seat with fees, read on 29 October 2026. That includes LUMINISCENCE night by night: which of its 31 Christmas nights have the live orchestra and choir, and which play the recorded soundtrack for about $26 less.

Then we routed the walk on OpenStreetMap from each hotel in our New York edit to the tree, St Patrick's, Saks, Bryant Park, Macy's and Times Square. Only one hotel puts the tree, the cathedral and Saks within a quarter of an hour on foot, and one in NoMad is ten minutes from Macy's. And because Christmas Day is when most of the city shuts, we checked what is actually on sale that day.

The free sights, with their 2026 dates

When does Christmas start in New York in 2026?

The season opens before Thanksgiving. Bryant Park's Winter Village opened on 28 October with free skating and its Holiday Shops, Macy's windows at Herald Square follow on 19 November and Saks Fifth Avenue's windows and light show on 23 November. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the 100th, comes down to Herald Square on Thursday 26 November, and by the next evening the houses of Dyker Heights in Brooklyn are usually lit.

The Rockefeller Center tree arrives on 7 November and is lit on Wednesday 2 December, during NBC's live broadcast of Christmas in Rockefeller Center. It stays up until 9 January 2027, lit for 24 hours on Christmas Day and from 5am to 9pm on New Year's Eve. The season ends in Times Square at midnight on Thursday 31 December, free and without tickets.

The evenings to book, night by night

What Christmas shows can you book in New York in December 2026?

Fever sells the candlelit evenings that fill the gaps between the free sights. These are the ones on sale between 18 November 2026 and 2 January 2027, as Fever listed them on 29 October, with the cheapest seat on that date including Fever's booking fee.

The seasonal one is Candlelight: Christmas Carols on Strings: the Highline String Quartet plays about twenty carols, from Carol of the Bells to O Holy Night and Silent Night, for an hour among the candles. It plays three venues in the week before Christmas. The one we would book is St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights, rated 4.9 from 76 reviews on Fever, almost all from last December. The rest of Candlelight in this window is the year-round programme: Hans Zimmer, Queen vs. ABBA and Juan Gabriel at the Church of the Heavenly Rest on Fifth Avenue. The Jazz Room adds New Orleans jazz and Marvin Gaye at The Cutting Room in NoMad, and The Jury Experience tries The Killer AI at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn on 19 December.

LUMINISCENCE at St Patrick's: the Christmas show inside the cathedral

When is LUMINISCENCE Christmas Edition at St Patrick's Cathedral, and how much is it?

LUMINISCENCE turns the inside of St Patrick's Cathedral into a screen: projections mapped across the Gothic nave, with the story of how the cathedral was built narrated by Jonathan Roumie, and music in Dolby surround or, on some nights, from a live orchestra and choir. Fever says the projection lasts 45 minutes after a pre-show of 30 to 45 minutes, all ages are welcome, and the accessible entrance is on East 51st Street. It held 4.6 from 2,254 reviews on Fever on 29 October 2026, and the Christmas Edition runs from 18 November to 2 January.

The choice is live or recorded. On 29 October, 16 of the 31 Christmas nights had the orchestra and choir, mostly Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays plus 21, 22 and 29 December: Gold seats, from the middle of the nave towards the front, were $104.64 with fees. The other 15 nights play the recorded soundtrack, with Gold at $78.47. The Silver side rows, which Fever says have limited and partly blocked views, were $83.70 on live nights. There were no shows on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, but there are two on Christmas Day.

The one we would book is a live night in Gold. The cathedral is 11 minutes on foot from The Plaza, and LUMINISCENCE is the one evening on this page you could walk to after seeing the tree across the road.

What is open on Christmas Day

What can you do in New York on Christmas Day?

More than you might think. The tree at Rockefeller Center is lit for all 24 hours, and Bryant Park says its rink is open daily, including holidays. On Fever, three of our things to do had tickets on sale for Friday 25 December when we read them on 29 October.

Catacombs by Candlelight runs its usual four tours at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00: 80 minutes with a guide through the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral on Mulberry Street and the candlelit vaults beneath it, the only Catholic catacombs in New York, at $38 with the fee for adults and $32 for children and seniors. ARTE MUSEUM at Chelsea Piers, about 50,000 square feet of projected waves, roses and forests, opens from 10am with last entry at 7:30pm; Christmas Day is priced as a weekend, $54.99 for an adult against $39.99 on a weekday, with no booking fee. And LUMINISCENCE plays its recorded Christmas Edition at St Patrick's at 19:30 and 21:30.

That makes a day: the tree at first light, the catacombs at 10:00 or 12:00, ARTE MUSEUM in the afternoon and the cathedral at night.

New Year's Eve in Times Square

Do you need tickets for New Year's Eve in Times Square?

No. The ball drop is free and first come, first served, and the Times Square Alliance says there are no public viewing spaces for sale. In its FAQ for last year's celebration, the viewing areas opened at 3pm and filled street by street northwards from 43rd Street, as the NYPD closed each block; you enter only from Sixth or Eighth Avenue, at 45th, 49th, 52nd or 56th Street, and nobody may cross Broadway once the streets close.

The Alliance is plain about the rest: no backpacks, large bags, umbrellas or folding chairs, every bag is searched, there are no portable toilets, and if you leave your spot to eat you cannot come back to it. The 2026 FAQ is not yet published, so check it in December.

The alternative is a seat. None of the Candlelight, Jazz Room or Jury Experience shows we cover has a date on 31 December, and LUMINISCENCE is dark that night, but the Rockefeller tree is lit from 5am to 9pm, so New Year's Eve can be the tree at dusk and a long dinner, with the ball on a screen.

Where to stay for Christmas: the walk to the tree

Which hotel is closest to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree?

In our edit, The Plaza. From its door on Grand Army Plaza it is 11 minutes on foot to St Patrick's, 12 to Saks and 13 to the tree, all straight down Fifth Avenue, and the Pulitzer Fountain and Central Park are across the road. It is the Christmas hotel of the films too: Kevin McCallister checks in alone in Home Alone 2.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel in NoMad is the one for the other end of the season's map: ten minutes on foot to Macy's windows at Herald Square, 18 to Bryant Park and Times Square, and 25 to the tree. The Jazz Room at The Cutting Room is an eight-minute walk. The Carlyle, on the Upper East Side, is half an hour from the tree, but four minutes by taxi from the Church of the Heavenly Rest, where three of the Candlelight evenings above play. Hotel Chelsea is 16 minutes from Macy's.

December is the dear month in Midtown. Our records for The Plaza put December 60 to 75 per cent above January: the Plaza King was $2,275 on 8 December and $2,395 on 15 December on a refundable rate read on 1 October 2026, before tax and the $65 nightly fee. The Carlyle runs about $1,950 to $2,150 a night from October to early December, and The Fifth Avenue Hotel up to about double its January rate.

The quieter Christmas: stay in Brooklyn

Is Brooklyn a good place to stay in New York at Christmas?

Yes, if you want Christmas without Fifth Avenue every evening. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge sits at the Pier 1 entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park, where the park goes quiet at night and Manhattan's skyline fills the window. The Christmas Carols Candlelight concert at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church on 17, 18 and 19 December is a 17-minute walk away, The Killer AI plays Roulette on Atlantic Avenue on 19 December, and Dyker Heights is 13 minutes by car, routed without traffic: the closest of our hotels to the lights. For Midtown, Clark Street station, 12 minutes on foot, has the 2 and 3 to Times Square in 16 minutes.

The William Vale in Williamsburg is the other Brooklyn choice, every room with a balcony and the west-facing ones looking at Manhattan, 20 minutes by car from Dyker Heights. The L from Bedford Avenue, ten minutes on foot, reaches Union Square in six. Williamsburg is livelier at night than DUMBO, so pick it for bars and 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge for calm. Our records put both at their cheapest in January and February and their dearest in September and October, rather than December.

  2. Pair the carols with dinner in Brooklyn HeightsThe St. Ann's carols start at 20:45 on 17 and 18 December and at 18:30 on 19 December. Doors open 60 minutes before, and nobody is let in once the music starts.

December weather in New York

How cold is New York at Christmas?

Cold, mostly dry and usually without snow at Christmas. Over the five Decembers from 2021 to 2025, Central Park averaged a high of 7°C (44°F) and a low of -1°C (31°F), with frost on 18 nights of the month but only about three days that stayed below freezing. Snow was rarer than the films suggest: about 6 cm in a month on average, and none on Christmas Day in any of the five years. Rain is the likelier spoiler, with about 11 wet days in the month.

New Year's Eve is a long time to stand outside. At midnight on 1 January the temperature in Central Park was between -1°C and 11°C in those five years, and on 1 January 2026 it felt like -6°C in the wind. Dress for the Times Square Alliance's warning about below-freezing hours outdoors: layers, a windproof coat and a hat, since umbrellas are not allowed in.
