The catch at The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel
Five things stand between the atrium in the photographs and the night you will actually have. None of them touches the reason to come, which is the 1883 ironwork rising over the bar, but each one has cost a guest sleep, daylight, a terrace or money they had not counted on.
On our shortlists
A public bar fills the floor of the atrium, and a club in the cellar plays until 4am at weekends
The Bar Room is the hotel's centrepiece and a public bar, busy after work, at the foot of an open well nine storeys high. Its late menu and bar service run to 11pm on Sunday and Monday, midnight from Tuesday to Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday. In the cellar, Laissez Faire, the cocktail lounge and club entered from 10 Theatre Alley, puts DJs on a four-point Danley sound system until 3am on Thursday and 4am on Friday and Saturday. Noise on the lower floors, from the bar and from the street, is a complaint guests keep raising, and rooms whose doors open straight onto the atrium galleries take more of the sound rising up the well than rooms down the side hallways.
What to do. Ask for a high floor, in a room down one of the side hallways rather than one opening onto the atrium. Sunday and Monday are the quiet nights: the bar stops serving at 11pm and the club is shut from Sunday to Tuesday. On a Friday or Saturday, make the bar your night out rather than your neighbour.
Every night carries a $45.89 destination fee, and the wellness it pays for is a gym
The hotel adds a daily destination fee of $45.89 a room plus tax, which it describes as subject to change. It covers wifi, local and long-distance calls, morning coffee in the lobby, shoe shining, the house car, priority access to the restaurants, partner discounts such as cheaper One World Observatory tickets, and the 24-hour gym on two levels with Peloton bikes. That gym is the whole of the wellness offer: there is no spa and no pool, only massages and facials in your room, arranged by the concierge. On the $506 entry rate for a Tuesday in late January 2027, tax, the $3.50 nightly city charge and the fee take the night past $630. Valet parking is $95 a day, $110 for an SUV, with no in-and-out.
What to do. Count the fee into the rate from the start, then use what it pays for. The house car drops guests within a mile of the hotel from 1pm to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, which reaches the 9/11 Memorial and Brookfield Place.
Rooms on the street get the daylight and the noise, and rooms facing inward get the quiet and the dark
The hotel does not sell its rooms by outlook, and the two sides of the building behave differently. Rooms on the street get the daylight through big windows, but guests on that side have raised thin glazing, traffic and early building work. Rooms that face the inner court are far quieter and dim with it: a courtyard-facing Deluxe King has had barely any daylight, and a dark hotel is the gripe that recurs from 2018 to late 2025. The public rooms are lit low by design, all dark wood, velvet and lamplight under the skylight.
What to do. Decide which you would rather have and say so when you book. Light sleepers should ask for an inward-facing room on a high floor; anyone who needs a bright morning should ask for a room on the street, as high up as the hotel can manage.
The three cheapest rooms are within 35 sq ft of each other, and the first with real space costs $153 more
The Superior Queen is 285 sq ft (26 m²), the Superior King 300 sq ft (28 m²) and the Deluxe King 320 sq ft (30 m²), and the two terrace rooms are smaller still at 280 sq ft (26 m²). The steps between the first three buy a bigger bed or room for a third guest rather than floor area. The Premium King is where the room changes, at 375 sq ft (35 m²) under high ceilings and crown mouldings, with velvet and leather, an armoire and a marble desk. For a Tuesday in late January 2027 the four ran $506, $570, $612 and $659 a night before tax and the fee, so space to unpack costs $153 a night over the entry rate.
What to do. If you will spend time in the room, book the Premium King. If you will only sleep there, the Superior Queen has the same rain shower and Carrara marble for $153 less.
Scaffolding has stood at the building since 2022, and the terrace rooms have had no terraces since May 2024
Facade repairs have kept a sidewalk shed over the pavement at the building, under city permits renewed without a break since March 2022. The latest shed permit runs to 21 December 2026, a suspended scaffold is permitted to February 2027 and overhead protection to March 2027, so a winter stay should expect to find it there. City-mandated facade work also closed the terraces of the two terrace room categories in May 2024, for what the hotel then called about a year. The closure notice is still posted, there is no terrace access, and neither category was on sale for late January 2027.
What to do. Do not book either terrace category for the terrace. Check the hotel's terrace notice again before you travel, because both the shed and the closure could end before your dates or run past them.
Who should skip it
Light sleepers booking a Friday or Saturday, anyone who wants a spa afternoon or a pool, and anyone under 21, who cannot check in. Anyone whose New York is Midtown and the theatres: Times Square is a direct ride on the 2 or 3 from Fulton Street, but it is a ride every time. And anyone who wants a bright room without having to ask for one.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone who would rather come home at night to an 1883 atrium than to a lobby. A nine-storey atrium of cast-iron galleries under a pyramid skylight, an interior landmark since 2024, with a bar on the floor of it and Colicchio and Boulud downstairs, is something no newer hotel downtown can build. Book a Premium King, ask for a high floor, and treat everything above as the price of the ironwork.
The catch elsewhere in New York
- The PlazaMidtown
The entry rooms do not face Central Park or Fifth Avenue. The Plaza King and Deluxe rooms look over the inner courtyard or 58th Street, and in January the Carnegie suites, with a partial park view, and the Pulitzer suites, over Fifth Avenue, cost more than $1,000 a night above them.
- The Carlyle, A Rosewood HotelUpper East Side
The entry Superior Room is 360 sq ft (33 m²), faces the courtyard and has a rain shower but no bath, and even in January it costs about $1,300 a night before tax.
- The Fifth Avenue HotelNoMad
The 1907 building holds only suites, from about $2,065 a night in January. Every standard room is in the 2023 tower.
- 1 Hotel Brooklyn BridgeDUMBO, Brooklyn
A $45 nightly amenity fee plus tax is added to every room at check-in, covering the house car, the classes and the pool whether you use them or not.
- The William ValeWilliamsburg, Brooklyn
The entry King with Balcony is sold on neighbourhood views. The Manhattan skyline is promised only in categories with Manhattan View in the name and in the penthouse Vale Garden Residence.
- Nine OrchardLower East Side
The cheapest rooms are small: the Studio Queen is 230 sq ft (21 m²) with little storage, and the Nook is sold below it without a published size.
- Hotel ChelseaChelsea
The Petite Chelsea, the entry room, is about 200 sq ft (19 m²), with a queen bed, a limited view and a place on the lower floors.
- TWA HotelJFK Airport, Queens
It is an airport hotel. Midtown is about 50 minutes away by AirTrain and the E train, so it works as a first or last night, not as a base for the city.
- citizenM New York BoweryLower East Side
Every room is about 150 sq ft (14 m²): the bed meets the walls on three sides, and the shower is a glass pod in the room itself.

Our verdict
Book The Beekman for a landmarked Victorian atrium, with the Brooklyn Bridge and the 9/11 Memorial on foot. Pay up to a Premium King on a high floor, and make the bar downstairs your night out rather than your alarm clock.
