What we looked for

Design on the Amalfi Coast starts with the coast's own craft: whitewashed vaults and arches, stairways down the cliff, and floors and tables of painted majolica. The three hotels here use it in three different ways. Borgo Santandrea, opened in 2021 on the cliff above Conca dei Marini, is a 1960s hotel rebuilt as a showcase of mid-century furniture and tile made by local artisans. Le Sirenuse, a hotel since 1951, is a family house in Positano that has grown around the old villa, with no two rooms alike and contemporary art in its public rooms. Palazzo Pascal, in Minuta above Amalfi, is a palazzo restored by a family of ceramic makers.

Choose by setting as much as style. Le Sirenuse puts you in Positano, with the town on foot down its steps. Borgo Santandrea stands apart, with a beach for guests and a free shuttle to Amalfi. Palazzo Pascal is the small, quiet one, with a pool facing Ravello and the gentlest price of the three.

Borgo Santandrea

Conca dei Marini, Amalfi Coast

Two Italian hotel families took a 1960s hotel on the cliff above Conca dei Marini and spent almost four years turning it into what they call a villa by the sea: whitewashed arches, terraces and stairways stepping down 90 metres of cliff. Inside is their own collection of mid-century furniture, gathered in Italy, Scandinavia and Argentina and re-covered in Italian fabrics, set beside Gio Ponti chairs and tables still made by Molteni&C and pieces built for the rooms by local craftsmen.

The tiles are the signature: 31 patterns, handmade and hand-painted by local artisans, borrowing their geometry from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Cuma and from Gio Ponti, in the blue and white that covers many of the floors. The same eye runs down the cliff, to Alici's terrace floored in blue majolica and a beach restaurant in a nineteenth-century fishermen's boathouse.

Le Sirenuse

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Le Sirenuse began as the Sersale family's summer villa on Via Cristoforo Colombo, and the hotel has grown around it since 1951, still in the family's hands. No two of its 58 rooms are alike. Whitewashed walls, repainted each winter, rise in many rooms to traditional cross vaults, and the antiques and Suzani rugs are the ones Franco Sersale, one of the four founders, collected.

The public rooms carry the newer names. The floor of the terrace pool, set among lemon trees and bougainvillea, has carried a mosaic by the Swiss artist Nicolas Party since 2024; the spa was designed by Gae Aulenti, with a granite steam bath and an ice room; and the Don't Worry Bar has a neon by Martin Creed. At night La Sponda is lit by hundreds of suspended candles, and Franco's Bar sets out hand-painted blue tables behind Venetian glass curtains.

Palazzo Pascal

Scala, Amalfi Coast

Palazzo Pascal was restored by the family behind Pascal art ceramics, and their work is in every one of its 13 rooms and suites; dinner at Gli Ulivi is served on it too. The building gives the frame. The house is far older than the hotel: by the hotel's account it lodged the priests of the Church of the Annunziata next door from the 11th century, and became a noble home with terraced gardens of medicinal herbs in the 18th. The hotel calls the result the first five-star albergo diffuso on the coast.

Each room is a category of its own, from the Dependance, renovated in 2024 in a garden of olive trees and vines, to suites in the palazzo with portholes, French balconies and private terraces over Ravello. The MICHELIN Guide gives it a Key.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Amalfi Coast

Which Amalfi Coast hotel has the hand-painted tiles?

Borgo Santandrea, above Conca dei Marini. Local artisans handmade and hand-painted 31 tile patterns for it, taking their geometry from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Cuma and from Gio Ponti, and their blue and white covers many of the floors; Alici, its starred restaurant, has a terrace floored in blue and azure majolica. Painted tile runs through the coast: at Hotel Tramonto d'Oro in Praiano, the Deluxe Mediterranean rooms have hand-painted Vietri tiled floors.

What is the mosaic in Le Sirenuse's pool?

Since 2024 the floor of Le Sirenuse's terrace pool has carried a mosaic by the Swiss artist Nicolas Party. The pool itself was cut into the terrace in the 1970s, among lemon trees and bougainvillea, with Positano and the sea beyond it. Art runs through the hotel: the spa is by Gae Aulenti, and the Don't Worry Bar, the after-dinner speakeasy, has a neon by Martin Creed.

Do the cheaper rooms get the same design?

At Borgo Santandrea, largely yes: every category has the hand-painted tile floors, furniture made by local craftsmen and a marble bathroom, and what changes is the view. At Le Sirenuse no two rooms are alike, with white walls, antiques and, in many, cross-vaulted ceilings, but the Courtyard rooms look onto an inner courtyard. At Palazzo Pascal every room has Pascal ceramics; the entry rooms are in the Dependance, renovated in 2024, and the palazzo starts with the Superior Suite IRIS.

Can you see these hotels without staying?

Yes, at dinner. Alici, Borgo Santandrea's starred terrace, takes bookings from non-residents, and a booking is wise. La Sponda, Le Sirenuse's candlelit dining room, is open to non-residents every evening in season, and Franco's Bar at its front door opens from 5pm from April to October without reservations. Gli Ulivi, at Palazzo Pascal, is open to outside guests and serves its dinners on Pascal ceramics.

Is there a design hotel near Ravello?

Palazzo Pascal, in Minuta, a hamlet of Scala, looks across the Valle del Dragone to Ravello. It is a palazzo of 13 rooms and suites restored by the family behind Pascal art ceramics, with their work in every room, a pool facing Ravello and the sea, and a MICHELIN Key. In Ravello itself, Caruso, A Belmond Hotel is the period choice, with 18th-century frescoes and vaulted halls in a palazzo rebuilt by the 16th century.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
