What we looked for

Quiet on the Amalfi Coast is mostly a question of which town you sleep in. Positano and Amalfi are where the ferries and the buses meet: in Amalfi the coast road runs along the seafront, and in Minori it runs through the centre. The calm is up on the ridge and out on the cliffs. Ravello and Scala sit 350 to 400 metres above the sea, with gardens, concerts and cooler evenings; the cliffs of Conca dei Marini are the stretch for staying put; and Praiano, next to Positano, is the quieter village of the two.

The trade is the same everywhere: with no village life on the doorstep, a swim or a dinner out means a shuttle, a bus or a taxi. So choose by what you want inside the gate. For a pool and the view, look to the ridge; for the sea itself, the two cliff hotels with their own beaches; for a gentler price and a bus at the door, Praiano.

Palazzo Pascal: The palazzo above its pool and the seaThe find

Palazzo Pascal

Scala, Amalfi Coast

Palazzo Pascal has 13 rooms and suites on the small piazza of Minuta, a hamlet of Scala, about 40 steps above the road. Seven of them are suites in the palazzo, two are Courtyard suites with their own door, and four are rooms in the Dependance, a separate house about 50 metres off across a 10,000 m² garden of olives and vines. Guests single out the quiet, private rooms.

The evening runs at the pace of the house: a drink at the Berry Bar beside the pool as the light falls on Ravello, then dinner at Gli Ulivi, made with herbs and produce from the hotel's own garden and served on Pascal ceramics. The trade is getting about, since the nearest bus stop is served three times a day and there is no beach.

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel

Ravello, Amalfi Coast

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel stands on Piazza San Giovanni del Toro at the top of Ravello, a village whose days run on gardens and music rather than the beach. Its 50 rooms and suites are in a palazzo rebuilt by the 16th century and its Garden Wing, and a rose colonnade leads up through the terraced gardens to the heated infinity pool over the Gulf of Salerno. Guests single out how quiet the rooms are, up at the top of the village.

The evenings are gentle rather than silent: Il Pantaleone serves dinner nightly on a terrace above the coast, and the Adagio Bar, among the 18th-century frescoes, has live music every evening. Villa Rufolo and the Duomo are 5 minutes away on foot, cars and taxis drive up to the entrance, and the free shuttle runs down to Amalfi when you want the sea.

Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa

Conca dei Marini, Amalfi Coast

Monastero Santa Rosa has 20 rooms and suites made from the nuns' former rooms, under vaulted ceilings on a clifftop promontory of Conca dei Marini, and it welcomes guests from the age of 16. Below the restaurant terrace, four levels of gardens step down to a heated infinity pool cut into the cliff, and the thermal suite in the 17th-century vaults, with a steam room, a sauna and a hydrotherapy pool, is included in every rate.

This is the stretch of coast for staying put. Il Refettorio, which holds a MICHELIN star, serves dinner every evening on a terrace over the gardens and the sea, so a night in needs no transport at all. When you want Amalfi, the free shuttle runs there until midnight.

Il San Pietro di Positano: The hotel stepped down the cliff east of PositanoThe escape

4 / 6

Il San Pietro di Positano

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Il San Pietro di Positano is built down the Laurito headland on ten levels, about 1.5 km east of Positano's centre, with the rooms below the coast road, facing the sea. Every room has a private sea-facing terrace. A lift cut through the rock runs to the hotel's cove, where the sun deck, sea platforms and bar are for resident guests, and the hotel takes guests aged 10 and over.

Dinner can stay in too: Zass, which holds a MICHELIN star, opens Monday to Saturday in a bright room looking over the sea to Praiano, and Carlino serves by the water at the foot of the lift. Positano's lanes and bars are a free shuttle ride away, and the shuttle runs at all hours, so the town is there when you want it.

5 / 6

Borgo Santandrea

Conca dei Marini, Amalfi Coast

Borgo Santandrea stands on the cliff above Conca dei Marini, 3.4 km from Amalfi and not in a town, with its 52 rooms and suites set 50 to 79 metres above the sea. It welcomes children from the age of 8. The days stay inside the gate: a saltwater pool on the way down, and two lifts that run 79 metres to a white pebble beach and jetty reserved for hotel guests.

The evenings do too. Alici, which holds a MICHELIN star, serves dinner on its majolica terrace over the sea, Marinella serves dinner on the private beach, and room service runs around the clock. For a night in Amalfi, the hotel's free shuttle goes by car or by boat from its own jetty.

Hotel Tramonto d'Oro

Praiano, Amalfi Coast

Hotel Tramonto d'Oro is in Praiano, the quieter village next to Positano, which grew from two hamlets and faces west along the coast. The Esposito family, who opened the Bar Tramonto d'Oro here in 1952, still run its 38 rooms. It stands on the sea side of the SS163, the coast road through the village, with the SITA buses stopping outside, so book a room with a sea-view terrace, which looks out over the water.

The evening here is the rooftop: the pool, open until 8pm from May to October, faces Positano, the Li Galli islands and Capri, and after dark Positano lights up across the bay. Dinner at La Cucina del Tramonto d'Oro, cooked by a grandson of the founders, looks out to sea, and a handful of Praiano restaurants, the starred Un Piano nel Cielo among them, are within 7 minutes on foot.

Classic Room with sea view terrace at Hotel Tramonto d'Oro: a double bed with a wooden headboard edged in ceramic tiles under a vaulted ceiling, with a wooden desk and wardrobe and curtained doors open to the terrace.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Amalfi Coast

Where is the quietest place to stay on the Amalfi Coast?

Up on the ridge, or on the cliffs between the towns. Ravello and Scala sit 350 to 400 metres above the sea, with gardens, concerts and cooler evenings: Caruso, A Belmond Hotel is at the top of Ravello, and Palazzo Pascal has 13 rooms in Minuta, a hamlet of Scala. The cliffs of Conca dei Marini are the stretch for staying put, with Monastero Santa Rosa and Borgo Santandrea. Praiano, next to Positano, is the quieter of the two villages.

Is Amalfi noisy at night?

Amalfi is the hub of the coast, with the ferry pier, the bus terminus and the coast road along the seafront, so it suits travellers who want everything on foot more than light sleepers. For quiet within easy reach of it, Borgo Santandrea is 3.4 km along the coast road with a free shuttle by car and by boat, Monastero Santa Rosa runs a free shuttle there until midnight, and Caruso, A Belmond Hotel runs a free scheduled shuttle down from Ravello.

Are there adults-only hotels on the Amalfi Coast?

None of our ten is strictly adults-only, but several set a minimum age. Monastero Santa Rosa welcomes guests from 16, Il San Pietro di Positano from 10 and Borgo Santandrea children from 8; the last two put their limits down to their cliff sites, all terraces and steps. Le Sirenuse does not accept children under 6. None of the six hotels on this list has a kids' club.

Is Ravello a good base for a quiet stay?

Yes, for couples who want gardens and the view rather than a beach. Ravello sits on the ridge about 350 metres above the sea, its evenings are cooler, and Villa Rufolo is 2 minutes from the Duomo on foot. The Ravello Festival opens its 2027 season on 4 July. The trade is a bus or a car for every swim: SITA Sud reaches Amalfi in 25 minutes. Caruso, A Belmond Hotel is at the top of the village, and Palazzo Pascal is across the valley in Scala.

Can you stay somewhere quiet on the Amalfi Coast without a car?

Yes, because the quiet hotels bring the towns to you. Il San Pietro di Positano runs a free shuttle into Positano at all hours, Monastero Santa Rosa one to Amalfi until midnight, Borgo Santandrea one to Amalfi by car and by boat, and Caruso, A Belmond Hotel a scheduled one down to Amalfi. At Hotel Tramonto d'Oro, SITA buses for Positano and Amalfi stop at the door. At Palazzo Pascal a taxi helps most, since the nearest stop is served three times a day.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
