What we looked for

On the Amalfi Coast, walking means steps. The towns are stacked on cliffs, so the question is not only how far but how steep, and whether the walk back climbs. Only a few places put the beach, the boats and dinner on foot, and our four are in them.

In Positano, cars stop at Piazza dei Mulini; below it everything is on foot, with Spiaggia Grande and the ferry pier 5 minutes downhill, so every return is a climb. Amalfi is the easiest base without a car: from the Duomo, Marina Grande is 2 minutes, the ferry pier 3 and Atrani 11, along a flat seafront. Minori is flatter still, with the beach and the pier 5 minutes from the Basilica. Choose Positano for the town itself, Amalfi for buses and boats to everywhere else, and Minori if steps are the problem.

Palazzo Murat

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Palazzo Murat is about as far inside Positano as a hotel gets. It stands on Via dei Mulini, the pedestrian lane from Piazza dei Mulini down to the church, so you step out of the gate into the town rather than onto a road. Santa Maria Assunta is 2 minutes away on foot, Spiaggia Grande 4 and the ferry pier 5, and La Zagara's pastries are a minute from the door.

All of that is downhill, so the walk back climbs, and the hotel has no lift. Cars stop at Piazza dei Mulini, 2 minutes away, where porters take the luggage on at no charge. Al Palazzo, in the MICHELIN Guide, lays dinner in the garden, so the last walk of the day can be a few steps. The SITA Sud stop at Sponda is 7 minutes up the hill.

If you want the sea and can manage stairs, the Deluxe Sea View rooms are on the second floor of the old palazzo; tell the hotel when you book.

Hotel Marina Riviera

Amalfi, Amalfi Coast

Hotel Marina Riviera is the base for seeing the whole coast on foot and by boat. It is on Amalfi's seafront road at the eastern edge of the centre, and the walk along the waterfront is short, with one flight of steps by Marina Grande: about 4 minutes to Piazza Duomo, 4 to the beach, 4 to the SITA Sud stop by the harbour and 7 to the ferry pier at Molo Pennello. From there, boats run to Positano and Minori all year and buses climb to Ravello.

A taxi pulls up at the door, which is rare in Amalfi, and the hotel asks guests to come without a car. Trattoria da Gemma and Pasticceria Pansa are 5 to 6 minutes away, and the Duomo stands at the top of its staircase from the piazza.

Le Sirenuse

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Le Sirenuse is on Via Cristoforo Colombo, the one-way lane that runs down from the coast road into the centre of Positano, about 45 metres above the sea. A car or taxi can pull up at the entrance, and from the door the town is on foot: Piazza dei Mulini is 3 minutes, the church of Santa Maria Assunta 6, Spiaggia Grande 7 and the ferry pier about 10.

Those walks are down steps and steep lanes, so the way back climbs; the SITA Sud stop at Sponda is 5 minutes uphill. The payoff is that dinner needs no transport at all. La Sponda and Franco's Bar are in the hotel, and Al Palazzo is 4 minutes away on foot.

Hotel Santa Lucia

Minori, Amalfi Coast

Hotel Santa Lucia is the one for anyone who wants to walk without the climb. It is on Via Alfonso Gatto in the middle of Minori, one of the few flat towns on this coast, and the SITA buses for Amalfi and Salerno stop 2 minutes from the door. The beach is 3 minutes on foot, the ferry pier 4 and the Basilica of Santa Trofimena 5. Travelmar calls all year, with Amalfi 10 minutes away by boat.

Inside, a lift serves every floor and two rooms are adapted for wheelchair users. Six places to eat, from Il Giardiniello to the Casa Amorino lemon garden bar, are 2 to 4 minutes away on foot.

Superior Room

Ask for one at the back, given on request: its terrace looks over Minori's Roman villa, on the side away from the coast road the buses use.

Every room, and why

Leave the car at home: the garage is €22 a night, and buses and boats leave within 4 minutes of the door.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Amalfi Coast

Can you stay on the Amalfi Coast without a car?

Yes, and most visitors are better without one. The coast has one road and little parking. Amalfi is the easiest base: from Hotel Marina Riviera, Piazza Duomo and the SITA Sud stop are about 4 minutes on foot and the ferry pier 7, with Travelmar to Positano in 25 minutes all year. In Minori, Hotel Santa Lucia has the bus 2 minutes away and the pier 4. The COSTIERASITA ticket gives 24 hours on SITA's buses from Sorrento to Salerno for €10.

Is Positano hard to walk around?

It is all steps and steep lanes, so every walk to the sea is a climb back. Cars stop at Piazza dei Mulini, and from there Spiaggia Grande and the ferry pier are 5 minutes downhill and Fornillo beach 14. Palazzo Murat is on the car-free lane 4 minutes above Spiaggia Grande, with no lift in the old palazzo. Le Sirenuse is about 45 metres above the sea, 7 minutes from the beach, though a car can pull up at its door.

Which town on the Amalfi Coast is flattest?

Minori, built on the flat at the mouth of its valley. From the Basilica of Santa Trofimena, the beach and the ferry pier are 5 minutes on foot and Maiori's seafront 21. Hotel Santa Lucia is in the centre, with the beach 3 minutes away, a lift to every floor and two rooms adapted for wheelchair users. Amalfi's seafront is flat too, though its Duomo is up a long staircase from the piazza.

How far is Amalfi from Positano?

By boat, 25 minutes on Travelmar for €10, all year. By SITA Sud bus it is 40 minutes from Amalfi to the Sponda stop above Positano. From Hotel Marina Riviera the ferry pier at Molo Pennello is about 7 minutes on foot; in Positano, Palazzo Murat is 5 minutes from the pier and Le Sirenuse about 10, both downhill.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
