This is the old city of Las Palmas on foot, with a guide to yourselves. It starts in Parque San Telmo, by the kiosk-bar El Modernista at the top of Calle Mayor de Triana, a few steps from the San Telmo bus station, and spends about two and a half hours in the two districts that make up the city's historic centre: Triana, the old merchants' quarter with its pedestrian high street, plazas and narrow lanes, and Vegueta, across the old course of the Guiniguada ravine, where the city began.

Vegueta is the reason to come. The city's tourist board dates Las Palmas to 24 June 1478, when an army sent by the Crown of Castile set up a camp near the mouth of the Guiniguada, and Vegueta grew around it as the administrative and religious centre. Plaza de Santa Ana, laid out in the early 16th century, sets the cathedral and the town hall face to face, a plan the tourist board says was later copied in the Americas. The cathedral of Santa Ana was built in two stages, from 1497 to 1570 and again from 1781, Gothic and Renaissance inside behind a mainly Neoclassical front. A few streets away is the Casa de Colón, named after Columbus, who stopped on Gran Canaria in 1492 to repair the rudder of one of his ships, and whose carved stone doorway and wooden balconies face Plaza del Pilar Nuevo.

Somewhere on the way, at a local bar, comes the tapa. The listing includes one tapa and one drink each, a soft drink, wine, beer or coffee, and its copies on other sites add that vegetarian and gluten-free tapas can be asked for, that the route can follow your interests, and that the pace is easy. Being private, there is nobody else to wait for, and time for questions.

On 6 November 2026 it cost from 55 euros a person on GetYourGuide, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and booking at least 6 hours ahead. GetYourGuide labels it wheelchair accessible. The listing has no fixed start time on its public page: the calendar shows the slots on sale.

Why this one

Of the walks through the old town on GetYourGuide on 6 November 2026, this was the one with both a high rating and a long record: 4.7 from about 220 reviews, and the only one that is private and includes food. The cheapest way to see Vegueta with a guide is the English-Only Vegueta Old Town Walking Tour, 9 euros for an hour, rated 4.1 from about 320 reviews: good for a quick look, but shared, shorter, Vegueta only and with nothing to eat. For more food and less history, Las Palmas: Tapas & Drinks in the Old Town is 55 euros for 2 hours, rated 4.7 from about 90 reviews, and its listing copies give two tapas and two drinks in a small group, meeting at the San Telmo church. The Gourmet Tapas and Wine Tour in the Old Town costs 47 euros and was rated 4.2 from about 20 reviews. If walking is the problem, the 90-minute tuk tuk tour of the city's history and viewpoints was rated 4.9 from about 40 reviews at 35 euros.

For a couple who want a guide to themselves, the old town explained and a drink in the middle, this is the one we would book. From the south it is a day in the city rather than an afternoon, so pair it with Poema del Mar, our aquarium page, which is in the port, a short ride away. Staying in Vegueta, Hotel Veintiuno on our Gran Canaria page is 15 minutes' walk from the start, and its restaurant notes tell you where to eat when the walk ends.

Good for

  • Couples who want a guide to themselves
  • A first day in Las Palmas, to get the lie of the old town
  • Guests staying in Vegueta or Ciudad Jardín, who can walk to the start

Not for

  • Anyone after a tapas dinner: it is one tapa and one drink
  • A quick, cheap look: the shared 1-hour Vegueta walk costs 9 euros
  • A south-coast stay with no full day to give the city

Temperature is the median at 12:00 in Vegueta and Triana, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 12:00; rainy days, the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more. Modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.

A walk for any month

At 12:00 the median temperature in the old town stayed between 19.4°C in March and 25.6°C in August in the data we looked at, so there is no month too hot or too cold to walk. Clear skies are rarest from April to June and in September, when on fewer than three days in ten was there little cloud at midday: that is the trade-wind cloud the city calls the panza de burro, which keeps the walk cool.

From our Gran Canaria hotels

Times are routed to Parque San Telmo, by the kiosk-bar El Modernista, where the walk starts. From Hotel Veintiuno, in Vegueta, and from Santa Catalina, in Ciudad Jardín, they are routed on foot; from the others, by car. Copies of the listing on other sites mention an optional taxi pickup in Las Palmas for 15 euros in cash, for up to three people; ask the operator when you book. From the south, Global's line 30 runs direct to Las Palmas, and city bus line 1 links the port and Las Canteras with Triana.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Friendly guides who know the history and architecture of both quarters
  • A private pace, unhurried, with time for questions
  • Corners of Vegueta and Triana that visitors walk past on their own

Complaints

  • One tapa and one drink is a break, not a meal

The catch

  1. Meet at the kiosk in Parque San Telmo

The listing's map pin and its published copies put the start in Parque San Telmo, beside the kiosk-bar El Modernista at the top of Calle Mayor de Triana. A separate tapas tour on GetYourGuide meets at the San Telmo church, in the same park, so it is easy to wait at the wrong one.

What to do. Go to the El Modernista kiosk ten minutes early, and check the meeting point on your voucher.

  2. Plan dinner for afterwards

The walk includes one tapa and one drink each, a pause rather than a meal. Vegueta's eating streets, Calle Armas, Calle Pelota and Calle Mendizábal, are a few minutes from the cathedral, but several of the better tables keep short weeks: Sorondongo opens Wednesday to Saturday and Casa Montesdeoca closes on Monday and Tuesday.

What to do. Book a table in Vegueta for when the walk ends, and ask your guide where they would eat.

  3. From the south, make a day of it

Routed by car, the start is 46 to 50 minutes from our hotels in Maspalomas, Meloneras and Salobre and 59 from Puerto de Mogán. Global's line 30 runs direct between Maspalomas and Las Palmas.

What to do. Pair the walk with Poema del Mar, our aquarium page, in the port, and come back after the rush hour.

  4. Monuments are seen from outside

The listing includes the walk, the guide, a tapa and a drink, not entry tickets, so the cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón are seen from outside.

What to do. If you want to go inside the cathedral or up its tower afterwards, check its opening hours for your day before you book the walk, and leave time at the end.

  5. Say what you eat when you book

Copies of the listing say vegetarian and gluten-free tapas are available on request; the tapa itself is chosen at a local bar on the day.

What to do. Put any diet or allergy in the booking notes, and wear flat shoes for Vegueta's cobbles.
