The day starts with the pickup. From the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March, the operator's minivan sets off from Puerto de Mogán and Taurito at 10:00, works east along the south coast through Puerto Rico, Arguineguín, Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés to San Agustín at 11:00, and collects in Las Palmas at 11:35; in summer every time moves about two hours later, to keep the sunset at the end. The first stops are on Bandama, above Las Palmas: the viewpoint on the Pico de Bandama, then the rim of the Caldera de Bandama, an explosive crater with farmland and trees on its floor, where the guide starts the story of how the island was built.

Then the road climbs to Cruz de Tejeda, the pass at about 1,500 metres where the land drops into the Tejeda caldera. There is a small tasting at a local stand, with honey, cheese and sweets to buy if you want them, and lunch at Tajinaste, a restaurant at the pass, which the operator describes as a tasting of Canarian and French fusion dishes, with local wine, or water and soft drinks for anyone who prefers. Tell the operator about any food restrictions when you book.

The walk is the heart of the day. From the Degollada de La Goleta, the path to Roque Nublo is about 3.5 kilometres there and back with about 200 metres of climbing, the operator says: an average gradient of 16 percent and up to 60 percent in places, on rock. At the top you stand at the foot of the rock column and look across the Sacred Mountains, the landscape around the Tejeda caldera that UNESCO inscribed in July 2019 as Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria. Since 3 February 2025 the Cabildo de Gran Canaria has required a booking for this path between 09:00 and 17:00, with its own quota for registered active tourism companies of 30 people every two hours, and the car park at La Goleta has closed, which makes a guided group with its own vehicle the simplest way up.

The day ends at Pico de las Nieves, at the top of the island, about 1,920 metres up. On a clear evening the sun goes down over the cloud that fills the valleys, with the Tirajana caldera below and, the operator says, Teide on Tenerife on the horizon, and there is a shot of honey rum to go with it. In November the sun sets there at about 18:10, and the operator puts the drop-offs at 19:00 to 20:30, about one and a half to two hours after sunset.

Why this one

On GetYourGuide on 6 November 2026 this tour was rated 4.8 from about 950 reviews, from 112.5 euros: the only listing we found that joins the walk up to Roque Nublo, a sit-down meal and sunset on the summit with pickup from both the south coast and Las Palmas. It is Climbo's own Volcano Heart Tour, which Climbo says is the same tour it sells on its own site, where it cost 125 euros on 6 November 2026, so booking it here was 12.5 euros cheaper. The cheaper rival is From Palmas: Pico de las Nieves and Roque Nublo, rated 4.7 from about 1,300 reviews, from 48 euros for 7.5 hours: its summary names Bandama, the summit and Teror, starts from Las Palmas and promises no sunset or meal. For more walking, the Peaks of Gran Canaria hiking tour was rated 4.9 from about 430 reviews, from 70 euros for 8 hours, with lunch, poles and an international mountain guide; from Maspalomas, Sky Rebels' Roque Nublo hike was rated 5.0 from about 40 reviews, from 87 euros for 5.5 hours.

If you want the summit without the hike, our sunset and stargazing page is the evening for you: 45 euros, with telescopes after dark. For mountain villages and valleys by four by four from the south, see the jeep safari. With a hire car you can drive up yourself and book a Roque Nublo slot on the Cabildo's site, but you park at Cruz de Los Llanos and ride the line 18 bus for the last stretch.

Good for

  • Seeing the mountains, the rock and the sunset in one day without driving the bends
  • Couples and friends who want a walk, a long lunch and a view
  • Fit walkers from about 5 years old, with a guide who explains the volcanoes

Not for

  • Anyone who cannot manage a steep, rocky path: the operator says you wait at the start
  • Cruise passengers: the operator says the timetable does not fit a ship
  • Anyone who wants to be back for the hotel dinner

Sunset is the month's typical local time at the summit. Temperature is the median at sunset, with the coldest evening in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of evenings with little mid or high cloud above the viewpoint at sunset: low cloud often lies below it, as the sea of clouds. Rain is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more. Modelled from Open-Meteo's historical weather.

Clearest in summer, coldest in winter

In the model the sky above the summit is clear at sunset on 93 evenings in 100 in July and about 6 in 10 in November. The median temperature at sunset is 9.6°C in November and 5.3°C in February and March, and the coldest evening in ten in February is under 2°C. From the last Sunday of March the tour runs two hours later, so summer sunsets come at about 21:00.

From our Gran Canaria hotels

Drive times are routed from each hotel in our Gran Canaria edit to the Pico de Bandama, the first stop, to show how far the minivan goes before the day begins: about 20 minutes from Las Palmas and 52 to 64 from the south coast. The operator's free pickup covers Puerto de Mogán, Taurito, Playa del Cura, Amadores, Puerto Rico, Patalavaca, Arguineguín, Faro de Maspalomas, Sonneland, Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, San Agustín, Playa del Águila, Bahía Feliz and Las Palmas, which takes in seven of our ten hotels. Meloneras and Salobre are not on the list, so ask for the nearest stop when you book; from the Parador the summit is 14 minutes away by car, but the tour does not start there.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides who know the volcanoes and keep a mixed group together, with good humour
  • Sunset above the clouds from the summit, with Teide on the horizon on clear evenings
  • Pickup at the hotel and the local food, wine and honey rum along the way

Complaints

  • The walk to the rock is short but steeper and rockier than some expect, and the wait for sunset can be cold

The catch

  1. Dress for winter at the top

Pico de las Nieves is about 1,920 metres up. In five years of weather data the median at sunset was 9.6°C in November and 5.3°C in February, and the coldest evening in ten in January was 2.5°C, while the coast below is in the twenties.

What to do. Pack a warm top, a windproof raincoat and a hat, as the operator asks, even if you leave the hotel in shorts.

  2. The walk is short but steep

The operator rates the path to Roque Nublo moderately challenging: about 3.5 kilometres there and back, about 200 metres up, rocky, with stretches up to 60 percent. The group keeps a pace set by the sunset, and anyone who stops waits at the start.

What to do. Wear hiking shoes or trainers with grip, not sandals, and if steep rock is a worry, take our sunset and stargazing evening instead.

  3. You are back after dinner time

Drop-offs run from about 19:00 to 20:30 in winter, one and a half to two hours after sunset, and later in summer, and the operator warns that this is usually after hotel dinner hours.

What to do. On half board, ask the hotel for a late dinner or a packed plate, and bring a snack for the drive home.

  4. The mountain roads bend all the way

The operator warns of winding roads to the summit and back, and suggests motion sickness tablets for anyone prone to car sickness.

What to do. Take a tablet before the pickup if bends bother you, and keep the lunch light.

  5. The sunset is not guaranteed

The tour runs rain or shine. In the model, the sky above the summit is clear at sunset on about 6 evenings in 10 in November and December, against more than 8 in 10 from May to August.

What to do. Book early in your stay, check the mountain forecast the day before you go, and use the free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead if it looks grey.
