This is a guided sea kayak tour of the cliffs on Gran Canaria's south-west coast, run by RockNatour, a registered active tourism company. It starts at Taurito beach, the next bay east of Puerto de Mogán: the operator meets you 15 minutes before the start in front of the Taurito Princess hotel, where Calle Alhambra ends above the beach. You carry the kayaks about 80 metres to the water, the guide shows you how to handle a two-seat sea kayak, and you set off. No experience is needed, the operator says.

The standard route is about 4 kilometres with two stops. RockNatour says it paddles into up to three sea caves under the cliffs, stops at two spots where you can jump from the rocks into the sea if you want to, and lands on a wild beach to snorkel over the volcanic seabed while the guide points out the fish. Jumping and snorkelling are both optional: you can stay on the beach instead. On the operator's own calendar the tour starts at 09:30 or 13:30 and lasts four hours, ending back at Taurito. The guide carries a rescue rope and first aid kit; life vests, a dry bag, mask and snorkel, insurance and photographs are included.

The sea here is part of the Franja marina de Mogán, a Special Area of Conservation in the EU's Natura 2000 network since September 2011, covering 29,993 hectares off the coasts of San Nicolás, Mogán and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Spain's environment ministry says the coast is sheltered from the prevailing wind and sea, which is why its shallow reefs and seagrass meadows are rich in fish such as the parrotfish and the seahorse, and why loggerhead and green turtles and bottlenose dolphins feed and rest offshore.

RockNatour is plain that this is a sporting tour, not a gentle paddle. It asks that guests be aged 16 to 55, swim comfortably in the sea, have a sporty level of fitness, have a body mass index between 19 and 29 so the kayak stays balanced, and understand English or Spanish. If that rules someone out, the operator also runs a short route, about 2 kilometres with one stop, from age 12 with an adult.

Why this one

Two cave kayak tours start from Taurito beach, and this is the one we would book. On GetYourGuide on 6 November 2026 it was rated 4.9 from about 430 reviews, from 65 euros, for 3 to 4 hours, with free cancellation and small groups. The other, Mogán: Guided Kayak to Caves and Snorkeling Tour, was rated 4.6 from about 410 reviews, also from 65 euros, for 4 hours. RockNatour's own site sold the standard route for 60 euros and the short route for 55, read the same day, with the same 24 hours' free cancellation; book direct to save a few euros, or on GetYourGuide to keep your bookings and reviews in one place.

If you would rather see this coast without paddling, the boat trip from Puerto de Mogán with optional snorkelling and lunch was rated 4.9 from about 930 reviews on GetYourGuide, from 65 euros. In our own set, Dolphins, on a small boat leaves from Puerto de Mogán with a swim stop, and Under the sea, staying dry takes the Golden Shark submarine from the same harbour, which suits children and non-swimmers this tour cannot take.

Good for

  • Active couples and friends who want more than a boat trip
  • Strong swimmers aged 16 to 55
  • Anyone staying in Puerto de Mogán or the Maspalomas resorts

Not for

  • Children under 16, who need the operator's short route
  • Non-swimmers or anyone after a gentle paddle
  • Guests in Las Palmas or the mountains without a car

Calm from May to November

In the four years of sea data we looked at, the sea off Taurito stayed under 1.5 metres on more than nine days in ten from May to November, against 68% in March, the roughest month. The water is warmest in August and September, at about 24°C, and coolest in February and March, at about 20°C.

From our Gran Canaria hotels

Drive times are routed to the meeting point in front of the Taurito Princess hotel, at the end of Calle Alhambra in Taurito. There is no pickup: RockNatour says transport is not included, so everyone makes their own way. From Cordial Mogán Playa the road goes round by the GC-1 motorway, so even the nearest hotel is a short drive, not a walk.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides who know the coast and keep a close eye on safety
  • Real variety in one morning: caves, cliff jumps and snorkelling
  • Photos of the day included, and good value for what it packs in

Complaints

  • Harder physical work than some guests expected

The catch

  1. You need to swim well and be fit

RockNatour asks for guests aged 16 to 55 who swim comfortably in the sea, have a sporty level of fitness and a body mass index between 19 and 29, and who understand English or Spanish. The operator calls it a sporting experience, not a calm tour.

What to do. If anyone in your group falls outside those limits, book the operator's short route (from 12, with an adult) or the dolphin boat or submarine from Puerto de Mogán.

  2. It starts in Taurito, not Puerto de Mogán

Despite the listing's title, the meeting point is in front of the Taurito Princess hotel, where Calle Alhambra ends above Taurito beach. The operator warns that booking systems sometimes show the wrong location and sends a form after booking with the exact point.

What to do. Fill in the operator's form when it arrives, and be there 15 minutes before the start: there is no transport, and from Puerto de Mogán the road goes round by the GC-1, 18 minutes by car.

  3. Come dressed for the water

The operator asks you to arrive with your swimsuit already on, plus water shoes, a T-shirt (ideally lycra) against the rub of the life vest, sun protection, water, a towel and dry clothes. Water shoes can be rented for 5 euros, and your bag can stay in the guide's car.

What to do. Bring your own water shoes and a rash vest if you have them, and pack sunscreen you can reapply on the beach stop.

  4. The sea sets the route

The guide chooses the caves and stops for the day's conditions, and the operator says it cancels with a refund when conditions are not good enough. In the four years of sea data we looked at, the sea off Taurito stayed under 1.5 metres on about nine days in ten from May to November, and on about seven or eight in ten from December to March.

What to do. In winter, book early in your stay so a cancelled day leaves time for another.
