Poema del Mar is the aquarium of the Loro Parque group, the company behind Loro Parque on Tenerife, and it opened to the public on 8 January 2018 on the Sanapú pier in the Port of Las Palmas, a few hundred metres from Las Canteras beach. The aquarium says it holds more than 550 animal species and over 9 million litres of water, in 35 marine and river ecosystems laid out in three zones: the Jungle, the Tropical zone and the Deep Ocean. The name comes from a series of paintings by the Gran Canaria artist Néstor de la Torre, which hangs in the aquarium's restaurant.
The route starts in the Jungle, with freshwater rivers, a cenote, crocodiles, piranhas, a pig-nosed turtle and the giant fish of the Amazon and Mississippi, among palms and plants that the aquarium says come from Africa, Asia and Australia. The Tropical zone follows: clownfish, jellyfish and seahorses, mangroves, the Red Sea and Arrecife, a glass cylinder of more than 400,000 litres of coral reef that you walk around. El Veril gathers the fish of the Canary Islands, from moray eels to parrotfish.
The Deep Ocean is the finale. Sharks, among them bull sharks, sand tiger sharks and zebra sharks, swim with rays, groupers and a loggerhead turtle in one great tank that you see three ways: through portholes, from a 360 degree viewing dome, and through the curved window. The aquarium gives the window as 36 metres long, 7 metres high and more than 250 square metres, and calls it the largest curved aquarium window in the world. The Néstor Restaurant looks into the same tank, and the Nemo Snack Bar sits by the Arrecife cylinder.
The ticket is a day visit for a timed entry. On the aquarium's own booking page, read on 6 November 2026, entry slots ran on the hour from 09:30 to 15:30, and the aquarium is open every day of the year from 09:30 to 17:30. Wi-Fi is free throughout, flash photography is not allowed anywhere, and the GetYourGuide listing marks the visit as wheelchair accessible.
Why this one
The price is the same as the aquarium's own: an adult ticket was 29 euros on GetYourGuide and on poema-del-mar.com on 6 November 2026. The difference is the small print. The aquarium's own terms say its tickets are non-refundable, while this one can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, which matters for a visit you may want to keep for a grey day. It was rated 4.8 from about 4,600 reviews on GetYourGuide, where it was marked a bestseller. Two groups should buy direct: Canary Islands residents, who paid 19 euros for an adult and 13.50 for a child aged 3 to 11 against a document check at the door, and anyone who wants the aquarium's Annual Pass or Photo Pack.
Staying in the south without a car, the Skip-the-Line Entrance and Transport to Poema del Mar ticket adds a hotel pickup and return for 55 euros, rated 4.7 from 30 reviews and about 5.5 hours in all. For animals as well as fish, the island's two zoos are in the south: Palmitos Park, our animal park page, with its bird and dolphin shows, from 39 euros and rated 4.7 from about 1,900 reviews, and Cocodrilo Park in Agüimes, from 13 euros and rated 4.6 from about 1,400. On a clear day near Puerto de Mogán, our submarine page shows the island's real seabed instead. In Las Palmas, our Vegueta and Triana walk with tapas fills the other half of a city day.
Good for
- Families, with under-3s free
- A grey or rainy day, when Las Palmas is cloudier than the south
- A half day in Las Palmas, 13 minutes on foot from Las Canteras
Not for
- Anyone after a full day out: most visits fill a morning or an afternoon
- Visitors who want land animals and shows: Palmitos Park has them
- A late start: the last entry slot is 15:30

Save it for a grey day in the north
In the weather data we looked at, Las Palmas had fewer clear days at 13:00 than Maspalomas in every month: 29% against 71% in June, 35% against 51% in November. The trade winds bring low cloud to the north of the island, so a grey morning in the city can be a sunny one on the south coast. That makes the aquarium a good plan for the cloudy days, and the free cancellation lets you move the date if the forecast changes.

The catch
Book a morning slot
Entry is by timed slot, on the hour from 09:30, and the last slot on the aquarium's booking page is 15:30. Reviewers say the big window draws a crowd at busy times.
What to do. Book a morning slot so the visit is not rushed before the 17:30 close, and give the window time at the end of the route.
Free cancellation is the reason to book here
The aquarium's own terms say its tickets are non-refundable. On GetYourGuide the same adult price can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.
What to do. Book through GetYourGuide for a flexible date, and move it to the first cloudy day in Las Palmas.
Residents pay less at the aquarium
On the aquarium's own booking page on 6 November 2026, Canary Islands residents paid 19 euros for an adult and 13.50 for a child, against a document check at the entrance.
What to do. If you live in the Canaries, buy direct and bring proof of residence.
From the south, take the bus or the transfer
The aquarium is about 50 minutes by car from our Maspalomas and Meloneras hotels and 63 from Puerto de Mogán, and this ticket has no pickup. Global's line 30 runs direct to Santa Catalina, 8 minutes on foot from the entrance.
What to do. Without a car, ride line 30, or book the version with hotel pickup and return for 55 euros.
Leave the flash off
The aquarium does not allow flash photography anywhere, or pets, and food only in its dining areas.
What to do. Switch off your phone's flash before you go in; the deep tank photographs well without it.
