What we looked for

Marrakech with children comes down to space and lanes. The Medina is a maze of lanes busy with mopeds and handcarts, and many riads are not step-free, which is hard work with a pushchair. That is why two of these three are out of town: Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech on the Route d'Amizmiz, 20 minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, and Palais Namaskar beyond the Palmeraie, where there is room to run and the holiday happens at the hotel.

The third, Royal Mansour Marrakech, is the way to have the Medina with children: a walled estate with gardens, a taxi to its own gate and a kids' club, with the Koutoubia 10 minutes away on foot. Choose by ages first, since the three clubs cover different years, then by how many bedrooms you need.

Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech

Route d'Amizmiz, Marrakech

This is the resort built for families. The Kids' Club is free for ages 3 to 12, open from 9am to 6pm in 500 m², with a tree house, a playground, workshops in pottery, calligraphy and painting, walks to the hotel farm and its own restaurant for lunch and dinner. Under-3s have a free baby room with a parent or nanny, babysitters can be booked a day ahead, and there is a nurse on site.

The main pool is 100 metres long, heated to 28°C, with a shallow children's zone. Resident children aged 5 and under eat free with their parents, and children aged 6 to 12 pay half price in most restaurants. Rooms start at 72 m², the Junior Suites sleep four, and a free shuttle runs into the city at set times for a morning in the souks.

Palais Namaskar

Palmeraie, Marrakech

Space is what Palais Namaskar gives a family. The five-hectare gardens are laid out around lakes, cascades and reflecting pools, every unit has its own terrace and access to an outdoor or private pool, and Namaskids, the play club for children aged 4 to 12, runs indoors and in the gardens.

The Two-Bedroom Pool Suite, over 140 m², has a king room and a twin room, each with its own bathroom, and a private pool off the living room: the suite for a couple with two children. For bigger groups, Villa Namaskar sleeps six and the Water Palace eight, each in its own garden with a pool. The Superior Room can also connect to a Pool Suite. For a winter stay, ask the hotel whether your suite's pool can be heated, as it does not say which ones are.

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Medina, Marrakech

Here a family gets a house of its own inside the Medina walls. The two-bedroom Privilege riads, 430 m² on three floors, have two bedrooms joined by a living room, two marble bathrooms, a dining room, a roof terrace with a pool and a dining area facing the Koutoubia minaret, and a butler. They sleep four.

Children aged 4 to 10 have Le Jardin de Lila, the kids' club, open every day from 9.30am to 5.30pm, with workshops, beginners' Arabic and treasure hunts. Around the riads, the gardens cover a little more than 2.5 hectares, with a 30-metre pool. A taxi stops at the hotel's own gate, so there is no walk through the lanes with luggage, and the Koutoubia is 10 minutes away on foot. The one-bedroom riads are sold for two, so a family of four should book a Privilege riad.
