Which room to book at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

The Theme Park View. It has the same beds, the same patio or balcony and the same outer-lodge setting as the entry Resort View, but it is sold on a view of Magic Kingdom across Seven Seas Lagoon, where the evening fireworks go up, for $203 a night more on a Tuesday in January. Below it sit the Resort View and the Water View; above it the ladder turns to club level, from $1,410, and to the suites.

Prices are a guide from our last check, not live rates.

Why this one

The three standard rooms are one room sold three ways. Resort View, Water View and Theme Park View all sit in the outer lodges around the gardens, pools and beach; all have two queens or a king plus a daybed, room for five and a child under three, a patio or balcony, a beverage cooler and a coffee and tea station. Only the view changes, and on a Tuesday in January the lagoon costs $61 a night more and Magic Kingdom $203 more. The Theme Park View is the one that changes the stay: Magic Kingdom's fireworks go up over the park in the evening, about a kilometre away across the water, and this is the room sold on that view. Disney does not promise Cinderella Castle from it, and with the park at an angle beyond the monorail beams, some rooms see more than others.

Above the standard rooms the ladder is about club level. From $1,410 a night it adds the Royal Palm Club, with continental breakfast, snacks and evening drinks, and a club concierge; rooms in the main building are sold this way. The Theme Park View - Club Level, at $1,594, carries the same view description as the standard Theme Park View for $537 a night more, so it is a price for the lounge rather than the outlook. The suites start at $1,914 for a one-bedroom with Royal Palm Club access, and only the two Theme Park View suites with club-level access are sold on Cinderella Castle itself.

Ask for
Disney names no building, floor or side for the category and sells it on a view of Magic Kingdom, where Cinderella Castle stands about a kilometre away at an angle, beyond the monorail beams and the trees of Adventureland, so ask at check-in for a room with a clear line to it. Say whether you want two queens or a king; both come with a daybed.
Avoid
The Resort View if the view is why you are coming, since it faces the courtyard, the marina or the pools. The Theme Park View - Club Level too, unless you want the lounge: it costs $537 a night more than the standard Theme Park View for the same described view. If the lagoon is enough, the Water View is the smaller step, $61 a night over the entry room.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are sold on Cinderella Castle itself, the only rooms Disney describes that way: the 1 BR - Theme Park View - Club Level Access, with a king and a queen sleeper sofa, from $1,932, and the two-bedroom version with a king and two queens, from $3,353, both in the outer lodges with Royal Palm Club access. The Grand Suite, from $3,756, tops the ladder with a view of Magic Kingdom and the grounds. The Villas and Resort Studios next door are a separate section, sold apart, and are not on this ladder.

Our verdict

Book the Grand Floridian to ride the monorail one stop to Magic Kingdom and end the day with the fireworks over the lagoon. Pay for a Theme Park View room if the fireworks are the point, and plan on Disney buses for the other parks.
