Where to eat at and around Quinta Nova Winery House
You are on a working estate on the north bank at Covas do Douro, and everything within walking distance belongs to it: Terraçu's, the Aeternus bar for a drink before dinner, and the Patamar, the wine shop and bar, for a glass and a plate of cheese and cured meats on its terrace, Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30 to 19:00 from April to October and to 17:30 in winter. Beyond the estate you need a car or a taxi: the nearest restaurants are 25 minutes away by car, so make the meals out lunches.

Chef André CarvalhoContemporary Douro cooking on a terrace over the vineyards
The terrace is the reason to come: it hangs over the terraces with the river bend below, and lunch here with the estate's own wines poured by people who made them is one of the Douro's set pieces. André Carvalho cooks contemporary Portuguese food with tasting menus and pairings, and the five-course Origins menu with wines is EUR 150 a head. Guest opinion on the food is mixed for that money, so book lunch for the view, keep dinner simpler and let the wine list carry it. Open daily 12:30 to 15:00 and 19:00 to 21:30, closed 23 to 27 December, and non-residents are welcome with a reservation.
Where most of your dinners will be, so know its shape. André Carvalho, who was born between the Douro and the Dão, cooks from family recipes with the estate's wines alongside. At dinner, starters are 19 to 24 euros and mains 32 to 44; lunch is set menus at 60 and 76 euros, and the Origens tasting menu is 95, or 150 with wines. Open daily 12:30 to 15:00 and 19:00 to 21:30, closed 23 to 27 December; no sportswear, beach shorts or flip-flops.

Lunch 12:30 to 15:00, tapas 15:00 to 17:30, dinner 19:00 to 21:30, closed 13 December to 1 January. From April to October, weather permitting, Tim's Terrace outside does wood-fired pizza at lunch and a barbecue at dinner.

Riverside restaurant, traditional Portuguese cooking
A traditional Portuguese restaurant with a river terrace, where the Pinhão river meets the Douro across the water from the town, and the answer to a week of tasting menus: its listings name bacalhau, grilled fish, steak and grilled chicken or pork. It has no website of its own, so ring before you go rather than trust hours posted elsewhere, and make it lunch, so that the drive back up to the estate is in daylight.

Breakfast
Breakfast is a buffet laid out at the big farm table where the hotel says it welcomes guests each morning, and guests count it among the best parts of the stay, so check that your rate includes it. There is no alternative on foot. The nearest café by road is in Covas do Douro village, 16 minutes away by car, so the buffet is the breakfast.
What to skip
Driving to Pinhão for dinner and back. It is about half an hour each way on narrow, winding roads that guests say are best driven in daylight, and the return comes after the wine. For a night off from Terraçu's, go out at lunch instead, or ask reception to arrange a ride both ways, since only the arrival and departure runs are free.

Our verdict
If your Douro trip is about the wine and the view rather than the town, this is the estate to base yourself on. Go by train, book the manor house and treat dinner as part of the stay rather than the reason for it.
