Glass-fronted restaurant on the beach · €€
The restaurant on Praia do Homem do Leme itself, three minutes from the hotel door, behind a glass front that looks straight out over the beach to the open Atlantic. The city's tourism listing describes a menu that runs from light salads and pasta to Portuguese cooking, which is the right register for a long lunch that is really about the view. It has no website of its own, so check the hours by phone before walking over late.

Neighbourhood tea room with lunches · €
A proper Portuguese salão de chá on the street behind the seafront: tea, coffee and cakes in a 44-seat room, and a lunch menu of caldo verde, rojões, bacalhau à Brás and everyday fish and meat dishes, with tripas à moda do Porto, the city's tripe stew, on Thursdays. Its own site gives opening from 7am, Monday to Saturday, and Sunday closed, which makes it the place for an early coffee or a plain lunch away from hotel prices.

Its own site gives lunch from noon and dinner from 7pm every day, until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Book at weekends.

Breakfast is served in Flor de Lis. Guests single it out, with oysters and eggs cooked to order among the reasons. The hotel does not publish a price for breakfast on its own, so check what your rate includes, and on a room-only rate ask what it costs before you arrive. The nearest early alternative is A Xícara, six minutes' walk on Rua de Gondarém, open from 7am except on Sundays.
A short stay built around Sunday and Monday nights if the starred dinner is the reason for coming. The dining room is closed both nights, and on those evenings the tables in the house are the hotel's second restaurant and the bar.
