Rome Ciampino airport: the guide

Rome Ciampino G. B. Pastine International Airport

Ciampino is Rome's second airport, 15 km south-east of the city and closer to the centre than Fiumicino. It is small, with a single passenger terminal, and used mostly by low-cost airlines: Ryanair runs 21 routes from it this winter. It welcomed about 4 million passengers in 2025. Being small is the point: short walks and a fixed €40 taxi fare into town. This is what to know before you land and before you fly home, checked against the airport operator and the transport operators.

The 30-second version

Ciampino is a small one-terminal airport, so you are at the kerb quickly: take a white taxi from the rank outside arrivals for the fixed €40 fare to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls. Flying out, buy the €10 Fast Track online if you are travelling at a busy time and check in online so you can go straight to security. There is no lounge, so eat at the cafés in departures, and note that the airport takes no commercial flights between 23:00 and 06:00.

One building for departures and arrivals, Schengen and non-Schengen, plus a separate General Aviation terminal for private flights. Check-in, security and the cafés are all a few minutes apart.

Landing to kerb

Every pick-up point, terminal by terminal
  1. Passport control and the Entry/Exit System

Flights from Schengen countries need no passport check. From the UK and the rest of the world you go through passport control, where non-EU visitors on a short stay are now registered in the EU Entry/Exit System: fingerprints and a photograph the first time, in place of the old stamp, which ended on 10 April 2026. Ciampino has 12 e-gates for travellers aged 14 and over with chip passports from the EU and from countries including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.

  2. Baggage

Two handling companies, Aviation Services and Consulta, deliver the bags, and the screen beside each belt says which one to see if yours is missing. Pushchairs come back at the collection point next to belt 4, and free courtesy pushchairs wait near the terminal access ramp to get you there.

  3. Information, tickets and money

The City of Rome's tourist information point in arrivals is open 09:00–18:00 and sells ATAC Metro and bus tickets and the Rome tourist pass, so you can sort the city's transport before you reach the kerb. The currency exchange in arrivals opens 08:00–21:00; the cash machines are in the departures area. The free AIRPORT FREE WIFI network needs only a browser.

  4. The taxi rank

Taxis wait outside arrivals. Take only the white cars with a TAXI sign on the roof and the licence number on the doors and inside. The fixed fare, all supplements included, is €40 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls and to Ostiense or Tiburtina station, and €55 to Fiumicino. Ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal.

  5. The Airlink to Termini

The Ciampino Airlink bus leaves from the square opposite the airport every 20 minutes for Ciampino station, where you change to a train to Termini; one ticket covers both for €2.70. It is the cheapest way in, with one change at Ciampino station.

  6. Coaches and city buses

All the bus stops are opposite international departures. Terravision, SIT and Rome Airport Bus run direct to Termini, with tickets online, from agents in arrivals or on board. City bus 720 runs to Laurentina on Metro line B and bus 520 to Cinecittà and Subaugusta on line A, useful for the Colosseum side of the city.

  7. Pre-booked drivers

A pre-booked driver meets you in the arrivals hall with your name. It is worth it after a late landing, because the arrivals terminal closes at midnight.

Kerb to gate

  1. When the terminal is open

Ciampino takes no commercial flights between 23:00 and 06:00. At night the departures terminal stays open only for passengers with a flight within the next 24 hours, so for a first-wave departure you can wait inside, and the Lavazza and Pick cafés open at 04:30. The fixed €40 taxi works in this direction too.

  2. Check-in and bag drop

Check-in rules and deadlines are your airline's, so read them on the booking. Checked in online with hand luggage only? Go straight to security. Ciampino's own advice is that hand baggage must not exceed 115 cm in total; your airline's size and weight limits may be tighter.

  3. Security and Fast Track

Fast Track is €10 online, with children up to 12 free with a paying adult, and gets you a dedicated lane through security. ADR Security staff run the checkpoints and say timings vary through the day. Bring liquids in a resealable clear plastic bag, as the airport advises; the information desks have a few if you forget. Parents and pregnant travellers can ask staff for the priority lane.

  4. Passport control on the way out

Flights to the UK and other non-Schengen countries pass border control, where non-EU travellers are recorded leaving under the Entry/Exit System and the 12 e-gates serve eligible chip passports.

  5. Where to wait

There is no lounge for scheduled passengers, so the cafés in departures are the waiting room: coffee from 04:00 at Panella, pizza and piadina from 07:00. The nursery and the 24-hour first aid post are beyond security. Free courtesy pushchairs wait just after security if you checked your own.

Night hours and early flights

Ciampino is closed to commercial take-offs and landings from 23:00 to 06:00 under Italy's noise rules. The arrivals terminal closes from midnight to 06:00, and the departures terminal stays open overnight only for passengers holding a travel document for a flight within the next 24 hours. For a first-wave flight, the comfortable answer is a night in Rome and a €40 taxi at dawn; the drive to our hotels takes about 31–39 minutes.

Is there a lounge at Ciampino?

No. The airport lists no lounge for scheduled passengers and Priority Pass has none at Ciampino. The Business Lounge on the airport's website is a pair of meeting rooms in the General Aviation terminal for private flights. With a short walk from check-in to gate, the cafés in departures do the job, and Panella and Lavazza are better than most lounge coffee.

Insider notes

Buy your Metro tickets at the tourist information point in arrivals before you leave the building. City buses 720 and 520 link the airport to Metro lines B and A, so a light traveller can reach the Colosseum without going via Termini. The Airlink has no size limit on luggage. Changing to a long-haul flight at Fiumicino? The fixed taxi fare between the two airports is €55. Check the airport code on every Rome booking: CIA is Ciampino, FCO is Fiumicino.

Travelling with children

Free courtesy pushchairs wait just after security and near the arrivals access ramp. There is a nursery with a changing table and a breastfeeding chair after security, family toilets, and three play corners: outside the main entrance, in the check-in area and by belt 1 in arrivals. Ask security staff for the priority lane, and note children up to 12 go through Fast Track free. The ADR information point before security gives out a Little Traveller Certificate for a child's first flight.

Step-free travel and assistance

ADR Assistance looks after travellers with reduced mobility and hidden disabilities at Ciampino as at Fiumicino, from the kerb to the aircraft seat, free of charge. Request it through your airline at least 48 hours before you fly. The terminal is on a compact plan, which makes the distances short.

Delays and your rights

Flights from Ciampino are covered by EU Regulation 261/2004. Arrive 3 hours or more late, or be cancelled at short notice, and compensation is €250 for flights up to 1,500 km and €400 for longer flights within the EU, unless the cause was extraordinary, with meals and refreshments while you wait.

Getting to our ten hotels

Ciampino is the closer of Rome's two airports to most of our hotels: the fixed €40 taxi reaches every one of the ten, all inside the Aurelian Walls, in about 31–39 minutes. Our Rome transfers page has the timed and priced way to each hotel, including the Airlink and coaches for light travellers.
