Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino)
Fiumicino is Rome's main airport and Italy's busiest, 32 km south-west of the city, with 51.3 million passengers in 2025. It works better than its size suggests: one terminal for Schengen flights, one for everything else, a train station inside the airport and a fixed taxi fare into town. Here is what to know, checked against the operators.
The 30-second version
Check which terminal your airline uses before you leave the hotel: Schengen flights go from Terminal 1 and the A gates, most others from Terminal 3 and the E gates. Buy the €10 Fast Track or book a free QPass security slot online, and if you fly ITA Airways direct to the US, pack liquids to the old 100 ml rule. On arrival, follow the train signs for the Leonardo Express to Termini (32 minutes, €14), or walk out to the white taxis for the fixed €55 fare to the centre.

Terminals
The information point in the terminal at Rome Fiumicino Airport
Terminal 1
ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air France, KLM, Iberia, TAP, easyJet, Ryanair, Volotea
Domestic and Schengen flights from the A gates. ITA Airways checks in here for every flight; for one outside Schengen you carry on through passport control to the E gates.
Terminal 3
British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Delta, United, American Airlines, Jet2, Vueling, Wizz Air
Non-Schengen and long-haul flights from the E gates and the Tax Free Mall. Left luggage and the coach station are on its arrivals level.
A Leonardo Express train at Roma Termini, ready to leave for Fiumicino Airport
Schengen flights arrive into Terminal 1 with no passport check; everything else comes through Terminal 3 and passport control. More than 700 free courtesy pushchairs wait at the aircraft exits if yours went in the hold.
2
Passport control and the Entry/Exit System
Non-EU visitors are now registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, live at Fiumicino since 12 October 2025 and in full since 10 April 2026, replacing the passport stamp: fingerprints and a photograph the first time, with self-service kiosks for biometric passports over 12. The 77 e-gates take EU passports from age 12 and chip passports from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and several other countries.
3
Baggage
Trolleys are free. Pushchairs come off by belt 26 in Terminal 1, and by belt 9 or 11 in Terminal 3. For a missing bag, the screen beside the belt names the handling agent's desk.
4
Cash, Wi-Fi and a SIM
Cash machines are in Terminals 1 and 3, with a currency exchange in Terminal 3. AIRPORT FREE WIFI is free and needs no account, and the airport sells an eSIM on its website.
5
The taxi rank
Official taxis are white, with a TAXI roof sign and the licence number on the doors. The ranks are on the arrivals road in front of Terminals 1 and 3 and in front of the railway station, and the fare to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls is a fixed €55 per car. Ignore offers of a ride inside the terminal.
6
The train
The station is inside the airport: follow the train signs, not the taxi signs. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, 05:38–23:27, for €14. The €8 FL1 stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina.
7
Coaches and pre-booked drivers
Coaches to Termini leave from the Bus Station on the Terminal 3 arrivals level; follow the Bus Station signs. A pre-booked driver waits in the arrivals hall, the easiest arrival after a late flight.
Kerb to gate
1
Find your terminal first
The airport sets no single arrival time and says security queues vary through the day, so work back from your airline's check-in deadline and allow for passport control outside Schengen. Ryanair, easyJet and ITA Airways use Terminal 1; British Airways, Jet2, Vueling and the long-haul airlines use Terminal 3. The taxi back is the same €55, and the first Leonardo Express leaves Termini at 04:50.
2
Check-in and bag drop
Checked in online with hand luggage only? Go straight to security. Claiming a VAT refund on goods in your hold bag? Do it at the customs office before check-in.
3
Security, Fast Track and QPass
Fast Track costs €10 online, children up to 12 free with a paying adult, 05:00–23:00 in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 East. QPass is free: book a security time slot online and use a reserved entrance. Families and pregnant travellers can use the Family Lane.
4
Liquids and laptops
New scanners allow liquids in containers up to 2 litres, with laptops left in the bag. Direct flights to the US or Israel with airlines that check in at Terminal 1 still use the old rules: 100 ml containers in a 1-litre clear bag, electronics out.
5
Passport control on the way out
Flights outside Schengen, including the UK, pass border control before the E gates, where non-EU travellers are recorded leaving under the Entry/Exit System. Use the e-gates if your passport qualifies.
6
Where to wait
Schengen passengers wait in the A gates, with the food court and most lounges. Non-Schengen passengers wait in the E gates and the Tax Free Mall, where shops take off Italy's 22% VAT for every nationality. Restaurants in both take free table bookings.
7
Far gates
The furthest gates are E51–E61. The airport's club car runs there from passport control for €10, and from the A gates to the E gates for €20, 06:00–23:00. Free assistance for reduced mobility is booked through your airline.
Lounges
Passes marked Book a pass are sold through GetYourGuide, which shows the price, hours and terms before you pay; we may earn a commission.

The hotel at Rome Fiumicino
Hilton Rome Airport
For an early flight, a late landing or a long wait: the one we would book.
The only full-service hotel you can walk to from Fiumicino without stepping outside. Rooms are soundproofed, there is a proper pool and gym to undo a long flight, and the covered walkway means no taxi queue at either end of the night.
The walk is covered but close to 10 minutes, so leave a little time for it with heavy bags.
Getting to the terminal

Covered walkway with moving sections to the terminals, under 10 minutes
Fiumicino's new scanners allow liquids in containers of up to 2 litres and let laptops stay in the bag. Not on every flight: on a direct flight to the US or Israel with an airline that checks in at Terminal 1, which includes ITA Airways, the old screening applies, with 100 ml containers in one clear 1-litre bag and electronics out. The same goes for some transfer passengers from outside Schengen. If you are changing planes elsewhere, check that airport's rules too.

Insider notes
Pick Up on Return lets you buy in the Tax Free Mall on the way out and collect when you land back. Restaurants in the A and E gates take free bookings, so a table at Berlucchi or Farinella can be waiting. The premium shower at the Prima Vista Portus lounge is bookable on its own.
Travelling with children
More than 700 free courtesy pushchairs wait at the aircraft exits and near gates A31, A61 and E1–E4, so you can check your own. The Family Lane at security is for parents and pregnant travellers. There are four nurseries with cots (behind check-in desks 312–327 in Terminal 3, before gates A61–A83, and near gates E11 and E44), play corners in both terminals and family toilets at gates A31–A52. Children up to 12 use Fast Track free, and the Plaza Premium First Lounge has a children's room.
Step-free travel and assistance
ADR Assistance, the airport's own team, looks after travellers with reduced mobility and hidden disabilities from the kerb to the aircraft seat, free of charge. Request it through your airline at least 48 hours ahead. Both terminals have accessible desks and priority routes at security and passport control.
Left luggage and porters
Yes, in Terminal 3 international arrivals next to the bus station, 07:00–23:00, at €10 per bag per 24 hours, paid on collection with no booking. Porters cost €9 per bag (€12 oversized) and can be booked online up to 24 hours ahead.

A long wait or an early flight
The Hilton Rome Airport is joined to the terminals by a covered walkway, under 10 minutes on foot, with 517 soundproofed rooms and an indoor pool. The Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport is the other on-airport hotel, and HelloSky's Arrival Lounge and Air Rooms, landside by the terminals, rent rooms by the hour. Overnight, Caffè Napoli in Terminal 3 and Caffè Vergnano in Terminal 1 are open 24 hours before security, as are Alemagna at the A gates and Caffè Kimbo at the E gates after it. Taxis run around the clock.
