Fiumicino to Rome: every way in, timed and priced

Fiumicino is 32 km from the centre of Rome, and the city has made the journey simple: a fixed taxi fare to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, a non-stop train to Termini every 15 minutes and coaches from the Terminal 3 bus station. Here is each option, where it leaves from at the airport, and the way we would reach each of the ten hotels in our Rome edit.

The short answer

Take a white taxi from the rank in front of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3: €55 fixed to all ten of our hotels, typically 30–45 minutes. Travelling light to the Colosseum side of the city, the Leonardo Express from the airport station reaches Termini in 32 minutes for €14. After the last train at 23:27, it is a taxi, a booked driver or a coach to Termini.

  • FCORome Fiumicino (FCO). Rome's main airport, on the coast south-west of the city: long-haul, most European airlines, and the Leonardo Express to Termini.

Every way in, timed and priced

White taxi, fixed fare

FCO
Time
Typically 30–45 minutes to our hotels
Price
€55 per car to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, all supplements included; capped at €80 elsewhere inside the ring road

Leaves from the ranks on the main road in front of Terminals 1 and 3, and in front of the railway station. The simplest answer for two or more with luggage and for every hotel away from the Metro.

Pre-booked private transfer

FCO
Time
The same drive as the taxi, with the driver waiting for your flight
Price
Fixed when you book; the widget on this page shows the live price

Meets you at the agreed point in front of the airport exit. Worth it for late or delayed flights, families who need child seats or a larger car, and hotels on pedestrian squares.

Leonardo Express train

FCO
Time
32 minutes non-stop to Roma Termini, every 15 minutes; from the airport 05:38–23:27
Price
€14 per person; 4 people for €40 on the Minigruppi ticket; under-4s free and one child aged 4–11 free with each paying adult

Leaves from the station inside the airport, signposted from arrivals. Quick and reliable to Termini, which is not the historic centre, so most of our hotels still need a Metro, bus or taxi after it.

FL1 regional train

FCO
Time
About 28 minutes to Roma Trastevere, 48 minutes to Roma Tiburtina; every 15 minutes on working days, every 30 on Sundays and holidays
Price
€8 per person to any station inside Rome's ring

From the same airport station. The cheaper train, stopping at Trastevere and Ostiense, which suits the south and west of the centre.

Coaches to Termini

FCO
Time
About 45 minutes to Termini, traffic permitting
Price
Terravision from €4 online; SIT, T.A.M. and Rome Airport Bus run the same route

From the Bus Station on the Terminal 3 arrivals level: Terravision stand 18, SIT 16, T.A.M. 17, Rome Airport Bus 19. The budget choice, and the only public option after midnight, but it ends at Termini.

Metro from Termini

FCO
Time
Line B two stops to Colosseo, one to Cavour; line A to Barberini, Spagna and Flaminio
Price
€1.50 single ticket, valid 100 minutes, or tap a contactless card at the gates

The onward leg that makes the train or coach work for hotels near a station. No line reaches the Pantheon or Piazza Navona.

From the airport to our ten hotels

Taxi or train from Fiumicino

Alone and travelling light, the train: €14 to Termini and €1.50 on the Metro. For two, the train is €28 before the onward leg, against €55 for a car to the door; three pay €42, and four travel for €40 on the Minigruppi ticket, both before the Metro or a taxi from Termini. Then look at the hotel. Palazzo Manfredi and The Inn at the Roman Forum are one or two Metro stops from Termini; the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo Marzio, Trastevere and the Aventine are not near any line, and that is where the fixed fare wins.

Taxi to the centre
€55 per car
Two by train to Termini
€28, plus the onward leg
Four on Minigruppi
€40 to Termini

Is the Leonardo Express worth it?

Yes, if Termini suits your hotel. It is non-stop, 32 minutes, every 15 minutes for most of the day, and the station is inside the airport, signposted from both terminals. Tap a contactless card at the gates or buy a €14 ticket; city Metrebus tickets are not valid on it. Under-4s ride free and each paying adult takes one child aged 4–11 free. The cheaper FL1, at €8, is slower but stops at Trastevere and Ostiense, closer to Donna Camilla Savelli and Hotel San Anselmo, though both are an uphill walk from the station.

Fiumicino to Rome at night

The last Leonardo Express leaves the airport at 23:27. After that, the taxi ranks keep working all night and the €55 fixed fare still applies, so a late landing costs nothing extra by car. Coaches to Termini run evening and after-midnight departures from the Terminal 3 Bus Station, but they leave you at Termini when you would rather be at the hotel. A pre-booked driver tracks the flight, so a delay changes nothing.

With children and luggage

Two adults and two children aged 4–11 pay €28 for the Leonardo Express, then the onward leg; the taxi is €55 to the door with no stairs or changes. For five or more, a pushchair and several cases, book a transfer and ask for a larger vehicle and child seats; the narrow streets around our hotels are no place to find the boot is too small.

Going back to Fiumicino

The fixed fare works in both directions, so ask the hotel to call a taxi and pay €55. The first Leonardo Express leaves Termini at 04:50 for an early flight. Check your terminal before you leave: Ryanair, easyJet and ITA use Terminal 1, British Airways, Jet2 and the long-haul airlines Terminal 3.
