Where to eat at and around Hotel San Roque

You are on Calle Esteban de Ponte in the old centre of Garachico, and everything you might want to eat is on this street or the one behind it; you will not need the car once it is parked. The hotel's own courtyard holds Anturium, which serves dinner every day from 19:00 to 23:00 with a last reservation at 21:30 and lunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 13:30 to 16:00, on two set menus: Essence at 49 euros a head with a welcome tapa, a glass of cava, two courses, dessert, water and coffee, and Experience, seven courses at 69. Both must be booked at least 24 hours ahead through the hotel's reservation form, and wine is extra on both. Bar Hoffmann and the pool bar handle drinks. Outside the door, within four minutes on foot, is the town's own eating, and the best of it is very good.

Within ten minutes on foot

  • Creative kitchen with serious wines · €€€

About 75 metres down the hotel's own street, a small dining room and a cellar that its site describes as an extensive selection of national and international wines, with a menu that sets classic against modern and lets the ingredient speak. Its own site gives Monday and Tuesday 13:00 to 22:00, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 18:00 to 22:00, and closed on Friday and Saturday, which is the opposite of most restaurants and worth planning around. Book through the site.

Rice and fish by the sea wall · €€

On the seafront avenue below the hotel, one street closer to the water, and listed by the town's tourism office for rice dishes and fresh fish. Its own website is no longer online, so its hours are not published; treat it as a lunch on the seafront avenue rather than a plan for the evening, and ask at the hotel whether it is open that day.

Bib Gourmand seafood and wine · €€

The reason a food-minded visitor comes to Garachico. A Bib Gourmand on guide.michelin.com, whose inspectors describe updated Canary Island cooking, a section of small sea plates, two tasting menus named for the tides, and a cheesecake made with a locally smoked cheese. Its own site lists the tasting menu with a six-wine pairing and snack-and-pairing flights, and gives Wednesday to Sunday 09:00 to 23:00. A hundred metres from the hotel door; book online.

    Old-school fish and soupy rice · €€

Further along the hotel's street towards the church, and listed by the town's tourism office for arroz caldoso, fresh fish and a wide choice of wines. This is the Garachico restaurant of the kind that existed before the tasting menus arrived: fresh fish, a soupy rice and a long wine list. The office publishes no hours, so check at the door.

Neighbourhood pizzeria two streets back · €

Two streets back from the hotel, a neighbourhood pizzeria and nothing more. It is the answer to two things the hotel does less well: a cheap, quick supper, and vegetarian choice, which guests report is limited at Anturium even though the hotel's FAQ says vegetarian and vegan options are offered. Hours are not published on a site of its own, so walk past in the early evening and look.

Breakfast

Breakfast is included on every rate and served à la carte from 08:00 to 10:30 in the pool courtyard or in your room; for an earlier start ask reception, the FAQ says. Guests report it as one of the best things about the stay, with cheeses, cold meats, pastries, fruit and eggs cooked to order. For a second coffee somewhere else, El Rebojo opens at 09:00 from Wednesday to Sunday, two minutes away.

What to skip

The terraces on the seafront avenue that trade on the lava pools in front of them. Some are fine, but the view is doing the work, and the same fish is cooked with more care two streets up the hill at the prices above.

Everything in Garachico is on foot and TITSA buses run to Icod and Puerto de la Cruz, but Teno and Masca want a car, parked free 30 metres away on the old football pitch.
