What we looked for

Most of Tenerife's big hotels were built for scale, and their look is resort classic: a Canarian village, a palace, a citadel, each of several hundred rooms. Design as the reason to book is rarer, and on our list it comes in two opposite forms. In the south, Royal Hideaway Corales Beach is a 2018 building by the Canarian architect Leonardo Omar, set on the rocky shore at La Caleta. In the north-west, Hotel San Roque is an 18th-century manor furnished with modern design classics and contemporary art, in Garachico, a town rebuilt over the lava of 1706 and now protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Choose by era and by weather. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach gives you a contemporary interior, the south's winter sun and two Michelin-starred restaurants under its own roof. Hotel San Roque gives you courtyards, galleries and cobbled streets outside the door, with more cloud and a car for the rest of the island.

Barceló opened it in 2018 at the northern end of Costa Adeje, and the Canarian architect Leonardo Omar gave it white curves and sea-facing terraces: the exterior is meant to read as a large ship, and the interiors take their cue from the corals off this coast. Every one of the 121 rooms is a junior suite of 55 to 65 square metres with a terrace, and even the entry room has an open-plan bathroom with a rain shower and a free-standing bath, so the design does not thin out at the entry price.

The public spaces carry it on. Three heated saltwater pools are spread through the building, with an infinity pool on the roof, and dinner can be El Rincón de Juan Carlos, two Michelin stars on the fifth floor, or a counter seat in front of the chefs at San Hô. The look has held up well since it opened.

The design here is a conversation between two centuries. The house is an 18th-century Canarian manor, restored from 1992 to 1996, built around courtyards and wooden galleries in volcanic stone, with deep walls that keep the heat out. The furniture is modern: Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Mackintosh and Breuer. In the stairwells and corridors hangs work by Carmen Calvo, Gonzalo González, Susy Gómez and Cristina Gámez.

Below the tower suite, the rooms differ in size, light and levels rather than view, from single-level doubles to duplexes with attic bedrooms under sloped ceilings, and every one has a whirlpool bath. The pool was cut through the volcanic rock beneath a courtyard during the restoration, and the roof solarium looks over Garachico's rooftops to the Atlantic. The hotel is family-run, and the owners' taste reaches every corner of it.

Is Royal Hideaway Corales Beach adults-only?

Yes. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach is the adults-only half of a resort, and its rooftop and the Wellness Corales spa are for guests of 16 and over. The family-friendly Corales Suites next door is joined to it by a walkway, and three of the resort's six restaurants, Il Bocconcino, La Trattoria and Starfish, are in that building. For dinner among adults, book San Hô, El Rincón de Juan Carlos or NAO in the Beach building, and make sure your room booking is for the Beach side, not Corales Suites.

Are there small boutique hotels in Tenerife?

Yes, although several of the island's best hotels run to 300 to 600 rooms. Hotel San Roque has 20, in an 18th-century manor in Garachico, family-run and adults only from 14. Royal Garden Villas & Spa has 28 villas on the hillside above Costa Adeje, each individually decorated and with its own heated pool. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach is larger, at 121 junior suites, but adults-only, with a contemporary interior and two Michelin-starred restaurants in the building.

What is Garachico like?

Small, flat and best seen on foot. It was the island's main port until the Trevejo eruption of 1706 buried it in lava, and the town built on top is now protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Hotel San Roque is 3 minutes from Plaza de la Libertad, where the San Francisco monastery of 1526 faces the square, and the Castillo de San Miguel and the El Caletón lava pools are a few minutes further. The streets are cobbled, dinner is on foot, and the town goes quiet after dark.
