Cofete is the beach on postcards of Fuerteventura that most visitors never reach. It lies on the far side of the Jandía mountains, on the open Atlantic coast, and the only way in by road is a gravel track from Morro Jable that climbs over the ridge and drops down the other side. The whole western shore is inside the Jandía Natural Park, protected since the Canary Islands' natural spaces law of 1987, and the hamlet of Cofete is one of only two settlements the law allows inside it.

This tour does the driving for you. A guide collects you from your hotel in a minibus and heads west from Jandía. The listing's stops are a surprise stop on the way, the Mirador de Cofete, where the track crests the ridge and the beach appears below, the Villa Winter and the beach itself, with a walk through the few houses of Cofete village. The operator says the road is closed to the tour in bad weather. It takes about four hours, hotel to hotel.

The Villa Winter is the story the tour is named for. It was built for Gustav Winter, a German engineer born in the Black Forest in 1893, who leased the Jandía peninsula in 1937. Legend has it as a wartime base for German submarines; the building records, invoices and diaries gathered for a 2025 book by his son, reported by elDiario.es, put the first stone in 1946, after the war, and no evidence of a submarine base has been found. The house is still lived in, and its resident shows visitors a few of its rooms for a small fee.

Then the beach: more than 12 kilometres of pale sand under mountains that rise straight out of the dunes, with a small islet offshore and big Atlantic surf. Guests come for the view, the space and the photographs. It is a place to walk and look; the sea here is rough, and the tour is about the scenery, not a swim.

Why this one

It was rated 4.8 from about 2,000 reviews on GetYourGuide on 26 October 2026, with the guides scored 4.9, transport 4.8 and value 4.7, and it was the cheaper of the two big sellers to Cofete, from 57 euros. The other, the Cofete Beach Jeep Safari, was rated 4.5 from about 2,700 reviews at 65 euros for three hours in a shared 4x4. A newer 4x4 safari that adds the Punta de Jandía lighthouse and Puertito de la Cruz runs five hours from 69 euros, with only about 40 reviews and a 4.3 rating. This one is the higher rated and the cheaper, and it adds the guided visit to the Villa Winter.

It suits the south: pickup is from your hotel, and from Morro Jable, Jandía or Esquinzo the drive to the villa is 67 to 78 minutes. From Corralejo it is close to three hours each way, so northern stays have two better options: Barceló Experiences sells a Cofete and Villa Winter minibus tour with pickup at Barceló Corralejo Sands from 87 euros, with free time in Morro Jable, or book "The island in a day" instead, which covers the centre and the west coast without the long drive south. Most hire-car contracts do not cover gravel tracks like this one, so check yours before driving it; on the tour, the driver has the road and you have the view.

Good for

  • Guests in Morro Jable, Jandía and Esquinzo
  • Anyone who would rather not drive the gravel track
  • Photographers and walkers who want Cofete without a full day

Not for

  • Children under 2 and anyone with limited mobility
  • A beach day with a swim
  • Northern stays, unless you book the pickup from Corralejo

When to go

What the sky, wind and sea are like at Cofete month by month, around midday. Temperature, cloud and gusts are modelled for the beach below the Villa Winter at 12:00; waves for the open sea off the beach.

Temperature is the median at 12:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 12:00; gusty, the share with gusts over 50 km/h at that hour. Waves are the median of each day's highest wave between 10:00 and 14:00 at sea off the beach.

Summer is the clearest, and the windiest

In the five years we looked at, July had a clear sky at noon on 86% of days, but gusts over 50 km/h on 82% of them, when the wind lifts the sand on the beach. October and November were the calmest, with gusts on about one day in five and the sea still about 22°C.

From our Fuerteventura hotels

Drive times are routed from each hotel in our Fuerteventura edit to the Villa Winter, on OpenStreetMap roads, to show how far Cofete is: the last stretch is the gravel track over the mountains. The tour collects you from your accommodation; the listing is titled for Jandía and names no pickup zone beyond that. If you are staying in Costa Calma or further north, check your hotel is covered before you book.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Cofete beach itself, which even guests with complaints call the highlight
  • Pickups on time and an easy day in a small bus
  • Guides who know the Jandía peninsula and its stories

Complaints

  • Only a couple of the villa's rooms are open, and some guides lean on the legends

The catch

  1. Cofete is for walking, not swimming

The beach faces the open Atlantic, with big surf and no services. In the sea data we looked at, the median day's highest wave offshore was 1.5 to 2.1 metres in every month.

What to do. Walk the sand, paddle at the edge and keep the swim for the lagoon side of the island.

  2. Carry a little cash for the villa

The listing puts the Villa Winter fee at 1 euro per person, and guests say it is paid at the house and shared out across the bus.

What to do. Bring a few euros in coins.

  3. Bad weather can close the track

The operator says the road to Cofete may not be passable in bad weather. Rain is rare: in the five years we looked at, 1 mm or more fell on about one day in eight in December and March, and far less in summer.

What to do. Book early in your stay, so a cancelled day can be moved; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

  4. Choose your language when you book

The operator plans each bus in one main language, German, English or Polish, and only sometimes adds English as a second.

What to do. Pick the English departure in the calendar and send any requests after booking.

  5. Enjoy the legends, know the record

The listing calls the villa 19th century; it was begun in 1946. The submarine stories make good telling, but the archive work published in 2025 found no base.

What to do. Take the stories as stories; the house and the view are real enough.

  6. Dress for the wind

In the five years we looked at, gusts over 50 km/h blew at noon on six days in ten or more from May to August, and the wind lifts the sand.

What to do. Bring a windproof layer and sunglasses; October and November are the calmest months.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Cofete beach and Villa Winter in a small group

How do you get to Cofete beach?

By a gravel track from Morro Jable over the Jandía mountains, about 24 km by road and just over an hour by car from Morro Jable. This tour collects you from your hotel in the south and does the drive for you.

Can you swim at Cofete beach?

It is an exposed Atlantic beach with heavy surf and no services, and the Canary Islands government advises against going into the sea where the surf is strong or there is no lifeguard service. Treat it as a place to walk and paddle.

Who built the Villa Winter?

Gustav Winter, a German engineer born in 1893, who leased the Jandía peninsula in 1937. Building records published in 2025 put the start of work in 1946, after the Second World War.

Was the Villa Winter a Nazi submarine base?

No evidence has been found. The documented German submarine supply operations in the Canaries were at the port of Las Palmas, and the house was begun in 1946, after the war.

Can you go inside the Villa Winter?

Yes, a few rooms. The house is still lived in and its resident shows visitors round for a small fee, about 1 euro per person on this tour, paid at the door.

How long is the Cofete tour?

About four hours, hotel to hotel, from the southern resorts. From 57 euros on GetYourGuide on 26 October 2026.

Is Cofete in a national park?

It is in the Jandía Natural Park, a regional protected area declared by the Canary Islands in 1987. The village of Cofete is recognised by a 2025 law as a settlement inside the park.
