What we looked for

Design on Lanzarote starts with one artist. César Manrique persuaded the island to build low and paint it white, and his gardens, viewpoints and lava caves are now its sights: the Jameos del Agua and the Jardín de Cactus among them, and his last home in Haría, open since 2013 as the Casa-Museo César Manrique. The hotels that are worth booking for their design either carry that thread or belong to the island's older building: whitewash, stone walls, wooden balconies and courtyards, as in Teguise, the capital until 1852 and a protected historic-artistic ensemble.

Our six fall into three pairs. Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote and Hotel César Lanzarote are the Manrique hotels. La Casa de los Naranjos and Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico are restored manor houses inland. Hotel Fariones and La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique are by the sea in Puerto del Carmen, both remade for today. Choose the pair first, then the setting: coast, vines, village or old capital.

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote heads this list because an architect and an artist made it together. Fernando Higueras designed the building, built from 1973 to 1977: a Y of exposed concrete whose three arms step down the site in terraces and skylights. César Manrique did the rest, the murals, the pool and the gardens, indoors and out.

At the heart of the building, beneath the octagon, his water garden drops in shallow steps and runs along a channel under trailing plants, with daylight falling from the skylights. His carved murals cover the walls of the old lobby, now the Ginger Lobby Bar, and of the original restaurant, where the finest is in porous red basalt. Outside, planted terraces climb the building the way the island's farm terraces climb its hills, and the 1,800 m² seawater lagoon pool winds through basalt and white walls. The gardens carry the highest grade of protection in Teguise's municipal catalogue.

Hotel César Lanzarote

La Geria, Lanzarote

Hotel César Lanzarote opened in 2023 in a former Manrique family house at La Asomada, beside La Geria's vineyards, with 20 rooms for guests of 16 and over. The palette is the island's own: white walls, touches of green and black lava, with underfloor heating throughout, and the four first-floor Superior Rooms are each designed differently.

The design reaches past the rooms. Massages take place in the house's old aljibes, the water cisterns; the estate's vineyard has been brought back to life; and solar panels and desalination supply much of the house's power and water. From the pool, set among palms and cacti, the view runs down the hillside to the coast. The MICHELIN Guide gave it One Key in its 2026 selection, its distinction for a very special stay.

La Casa de los Naranjos: The manor's whitewashed front behind its orange treesThe intimate one

3 / 6

La Casa de los Naranjos

Haría, Lanzarote

La Casa de los Naranjos is a 19th-century manor in Haría, brought back from near ruin with the house's own wood, stone and lime and advice from the Cabildo's historic heritage service. Lanzarote's heritage catalogue lists it as a monumental building, and the Canary government classes it a Hotel Emblemático.

Each of the eight rooms is different. Original floors, doors and paintwork survive, and the furniture is antique or made from the building's salvaged timber, down to headboards and desks. The shared spaces carry as much: a south-facing salon with two tall windows, a library of 19th-century books with globes and an atlas table, a stone-arched cistern beneath the patio, the orange garden and a roof terrace above the palms. The Casa-Museo César Manrique is about 570 metres away, 8 minutes on foot.

Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico: The courtyard's wooden balconies and staircaseThe classic

4 / 6

Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico

Teguise, Lanzarote

Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico is a manor house of around 1690 in Teguise's protected historic centre, and it keeps the frame of a Canarian noble house: thick whitewashed stone walls, wooden balconies around a courtyard, and coffered tea-pine ceilings four to five metres up. César Manrique included it in his survey of the island's traditional building, and in the 1980s the Swiss artist Heidi Bucher, who gave it its name, cast its doors and balconies in latex for her skinnings.

Each of the nine rooms keeps the size of the original space, and the furnishing is deliberately spare: micro-cement bathrooms in the suites, island ceramics and paintings by Ildefonso Aguilar. There is a library of more than 300 art books and a record player with its own shelf of vinyl. The house became a hotel in 2017 and was classed an Emblematic Hotel that same year.

Hotel Fariones: Golden sand and lava rock below the hotelThe beach one

5 / 6

Hotel Fariones

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Hotel Fariones is design of a different kind: the hotel where Lanzarote's beach holidays began, in 1966, on the point at the western end of Playa Grande. A full renovation from 2016 to 2020, costing more than €30 million, brought it back as a five-star with 213 rooms in place of 242, with interiors by the Canarian designer Rafael del Castillo.

What stayed matters as much as what changed: the palm garden around the pools is more than forty years old, and the infinity pool sits among the trees with the sea beyond. Every room has a sea-facing terrace, with rain showers and espresso machines from the entry rooms up. Higher up the ladder, the suites add freestanding baths and access to a rooftop terrace and pool looking across to Fuerteventura and Lobos.

La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique: The heated pool in the late sunThe adults-only one

6 / 6

La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique started life in the 1970s as the Balcón del Mar apartments. In 2015 the architect José María Pérez Sánchez clad the old blocks in volcanic stone and built new ones beside them, and the result looks nothing like the resort buildings on the seafront below. Low stone-walled buildings step down the slope among palms, lava boulders and beds of black picón, and the rebuild was designed on bioclimatic lines, heated and cooled by geothermal energy.

All 81 rooms are suites of at least 50 m², adults only, each with a king-size bed and a terrace or balcony. The heated pool, open all year, has a waterfall and hydromassage jets, and Kentia Gourmet Club pairs tasting menus of island produce with Canary Island wines.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Lanzarote

Can you stay in a César Manrique building in Lanzarote?

At Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, yes: the building is Fernando Higueras's, built from 1973 to 1977, and inside it are Manrique's atrium water garden, murals and 1,800 m² lagoon pool, with his gardens outside. Hotel César Lanzarote is in a former Manrique family house at La Asomada, though not the artist's own home or design. His last home, in Haría, is the Casa-Museo César Manrique, about 570 metres on foot from La Casa de los Naranjos.

Is Palacio Ico a real palace?

No. Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico is a Canarian manor of around 1690 in Teguise, the old capital, built round a courtyard with wooden balconies under coffered tea-pine ceilings. It was never historically a palace: the Swiss artist Heidi Bucher, who bought it in the 1980s, gave it the name. It became a hotel of nine rooms in 2017, classed an Emblematic Hotel, a category kept for historic buildings, and its dining room is recommended by MICHELIN.

Which Manrique sights are closest to the design hotels?

From Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, the Fundación César Manrique is 14 minutes by car and the Jardín de Cactus 18. From Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico, the Fundación is 10 minutes. From La Casa de los Naranjos, the Casa-Museo César Manrique is 8 minutes on foot, the Jameos del Agua 14 minutes by car and the Mirador del Río 16. The Jameos del Agua costs €17 and the Mirador del Río and the Jardín de Cactus €9.

Are there historic hotels in Lanzarote?

Four of ours have real history. Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico is a manor house of around 1690 in Teguise's protected historic centre. La Casa de los Naranjos is a 19th-century manor in Haría, listed as a monumental building in the island's heritage catalogue. Hotel Fariones, opened in 1966, was Lanzarote's first beach hotel, fully renovated as a five-star by 2020. Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, finished in 1977, keeps Manrique's gardens, protected at the highest grade in Teguise's municipal catalogue.

Do I need a car for the design hotels inland?

Yes. Hotel César Lanzarote, Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico and La Casa de los Naranjos all need a car, and all three have free parking. The island is small: off-peak, César Lanzarote is 13 minutes from the airport, Palacio Ico 21 and La Casa de los Naranjos 36. Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote, Hotel Fariones and La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique are on the coast, with bus lines and the sea on foot.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
