The catch at Cap Vermell Grand Hotel

Five things stand between the photographs and the stay. None of them is hidden, and none of them outweighs a two-star dinner on the hotel's own square, but each one decides whether the hotel suits you.

On our shortlists

  1. The hotel is on a hillside, and the beach is 25 minutes' walk down it

Cap Vermell is built on the Atalaya de Canyamel slope above the valley, and it has no beach of its own. Canyamel beach, the sandy bay at the mouth of the valley, is 1.8 km away: 25 minutes on foot downhill, then about 60 metres to climb on the way back.

The car is quicker, but only if you know the way. The hillside streets end above the north end of the sand, 4 minutes from the hotel, with footpaths and steps down to the beach. The road to the beachfront itself, where the cafés are, goes round by the valley and takes 11.

What to do. Treat the beach as an outing rather than a stroll: drive the 4 minutes to the top of the north end and walk down, and keep the hotel's pools for the afternoons.

  2. Voro is the reason to come, and it has rules, set nights and a ticket

Voro, Álvaro Salazar's restaurant in its own building on the Plaza de la Torre, is the only two-MICHELIN-star kitchen in the Balearic Islands in the 2026 guide. It serves one menu, Devoro, of about 28 courses at 290 euros a head before wine, with pairings at 170 or 370. Seatings run from 7pm to 8.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday in March, April, May and October and Monday to Friday from June to September, so it is closed two nights in every week. No one under 16 is admitted, there is no vegetarian or vegan version, men need long trousers and closed shoes, and every guest needs a prepaid ticket, refundable by email up to 48 hours ahead.

What to do. Book the table before the room and plan the stay around it. On Voro's two dark nights, eat at Bravo, Villa Sofia or ROKA on the estate, or drive 7 minutes to Porxada de Sa Torre, which serves dinner every night.

  3. You will want a car for everything beyond the gates

This is the far north-east of Mallorca: 71 minutes by car from Palma airport and 78 from Palma Cathedral. The estate holds four restaurants, the spa, the kids' club and, eight minutes away on foot, the Country Club. Beyond that, every meal and every outing is a drive or a long walk. Canyamel's restaurants are 10 or 11 minutes away by road, Capdepera's square 10, Cala Rajada 12 to 13, the old town of Artà 12 to 13 and the Coves d'Artà 4. Parking at the hotel is free, and a car is what turns the east coast's coves and villages into day trips rather than taxi fares.

What to do. Hire a car at the airport. Without one, plan to eat on the estate most nights and book taxis ahead for the evenings out.

  4. A junior suite sleeps three at most, so a family of four needs a bigger category

The three junior suites, Garden, Resort View and Valley View, are all 53 m² with a king or two single beds, and each takes two adults and one child at most. No junior suite takes a family of four. The hotel's answers are the Family Room, which is two connecting rooms for two adults with up to four children or for three or four adults, and the Grand Suites of 103 m², with one or two bedrooms. Both are bigger and dearer categories. The free kids' club for 4 to 11-year-olds is a reason to bring children; Voro, which admits no one under 16, is not.

What to do. Families of four should ask for the Family Room or a Grand Suite when they book, and make sure the rate covers everyone in the party.

  5. It closes for the winter, and the summer peak is the busiest and dearest stretch

The hotel's season runs from late March to the end of October; from November to late March it is closed, so it is no use for a winter break. Within the season the price follows the calendar: April and late October are the cheapest weeks, and July and August cost the most. When the resort is full, the pools feel small and breakfast service slows, two complaints that recur among guests. Voro's nights change with the season too: Tuesday to Saturday in spring and October, Monday to Friday in summer.

What to do. For space at the pool and a calmer breakfast, go in May, June or September rather than August, and go down to breakfast early.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants to walk to the beach or into a town for dinner, anyone without a car who wants to see the island, and anyone travelling between November and late March. Also families hoping to eat at Voro together, because it admits no one under 16, and vegetarians coming for Voro, which has no vegetarian or vegan menu.

Who should book it anyway

Couples and friends with a hire car who are building a trip around one great dinner. Voro, the Balearics' only two-star kitchen in the 2026 guide, is on the hotel's own square, and around it are 53 m² junior suites with terraces and Carrara marble bathrooms, the Canyamel valley from the Valley View rooms, Serenitas Spa with its rose quartz sauna, a free kids' club for 4 to 11-year-olds and a golf course next door. Book the table, then the room, then the car.

Come for Voro and stay for the quiet valley, the space and the spa. Book the table first, then the Junior Suite Valley View.
