The catch at Hotel Riu Palace Jandia
Five things stand between the sea-view terraces and the stay. None of them takes anything away from the beach, which is the reason to come and lies at the foot of the hotel's own steps, but each one decides how long to book, which room to take and whether this is the right base for your week.
On our shortlists
Most dates need a stay of five nights or more.
On most dates, in winter and in summer alike, the shortest stay on sale is five nights. From Tuesday 8 June 2027 a two-night and a four-night stay are both refused, and the same five-night rule applies from mid-December 2026 and on every date read through 2027, from January to October. A few autumn dates are shorter: three nights in late November and early December 2026, and no minimum at all in early November 2026. Prices follow the season. For two on half board, a night in the entry room is about €270 in May and June, €308 to €333 from January to April, Easter included, €485 just before Christmas and €591 over New Year.
What to do. Plan on a week. For a shorter stay, check dates in November and early December, and book May to July for the lowest rates.
The hotel steps down a slope, and most routes involve stairs.
The building runs down the hillside from the street to the seafront promenade, so reception, the rooms, the pool deck and the way to the beach sit on different levels. There are lifts, two of them in different parts of the hotel, but most routes between them still involve stairs and long corridors, and the hotel's own way down to Playa del Matorral is a flight of steps. It is the complaint guests raise most often, and it matters most with a pushchair, a walking stick or knees that dislike stairs. One category, the Accessible room with partial ocean view, is adapted for reduced mobility.
What to do. If stairs are hard, book the accessible room, or ask at booking for a room with an easy route to a lift.
The entry room is made up with two single beds.
The Double with lateral sea view, the cheapest room, is a generous 42 m² with a sofa, air conditioning, a ceiling fan and a balcony or terrace, but it comes with two 110 cm single beds, and it sees the sea at an angle. The accessible room has the same two singles. The 200 by 200 cm king-size bed belongs to the Double Room with sea view, the same 42 m² turned to face the sea. The floor and wing decide how much sea any room sees: lower rooms on the upper part of the slope can look over the pool and its palms first. The hotel publishes no floor plan.
What to do. For a double bed and the full view, book the Double Room with sea view: for 8 to 13 June 2027 it was €19 a night more on half board. Ask for a higher floor facing the beach.
There is one pool for the whole hotel, and it is not large.
The outdoor pool is 257 m² and heated in winter, with a separate children's pool, and it serves all 201 rooms. Its sun deck looks over the beach and was enlarged in the 2020 renovation, with room for about 100 more loungers, and the pool bar serves tapas. Even so, the size of the pool for a hotel of this size is the complaint guests repeat most after the stairs. There is no second pool and no indoor pool, and spa treatments are charged extra; the gym is free.
What to do. Treat the beach as the second pool: the sand of Playa del Matorral is down the hotel's own steps, with the promenade running east to the lighthouse.
It is a long way from the airport and from the north of the island.
Morro Jable is at the southern tip of Fuerteventura, about 85 km by road from the airport, and the transfer takes about 78 minutes off-peak. The south is close: Costa Calma is 22 minutes by car, the Sotavento lagoon 24 and the Cofete viewpoint 33, the last stretch on an unpaved road. The north is not. The Corralejo dunes are 101 minutes away, El Cotillo 102 and the Lobos ferry at Corralejo harbour 107, so a day there is a long one. A bus stop is 2 minutes from the hotel, and Tiadhe lines 01 and 10 link Morro Jable with Puerto del Rosario; the 10 runs on weekdays only.
What to do. Arrange the airport transfer before you land, and hire a car for a day or two if the dunes or the north are on the list.
Who should skip it
Anyone after a short break, since most dates need five nights. Also anyone who finds stairs hard and cannot take the accessible room, families who want a kids' club, travellers who want lunch and drinks covered by an all-inclusive (the board here is breakfast and dinner), and anyone planning to tour the whole island from one base.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone who wants a week of winter sun with the sand below the terrace. January afternoons at the island's airport average about 21°C, Playa del Matorral runs east from the foot of the hotel's steps for about 4 km past the Morro Jable lighthouse and the Saladar de Jandía saltmarsh, and the town is 12 minutes' walk the other way. Every room was renewed when the hotel reopened as a five-star at the end of 2020, every room has a balcony or terrace and a view of the sea, full or at an angle, and dinner is taken care of at the buffet or in Krystal. Book the Double Room with sea view, ask for a high floor, plan on a week, and the catches above stop mattering.
