The catch at Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura
Five things stand between the photographs and the stay. None of them takes away from the slides, the kids' club, the heated saltwater pool and the long golden beach below the gardens, which are the reasons to bring a family here, but each one decides which week to book, which room to take and whether you need a car.

- Best hotels with a view in FuerteventuraThe Atlantic and Sotavento beach, and a lagoon view for adults
The lagoon below the gardens fills only around the full and new moon.
A sandbar between 100 and 300 metres offshore holds back a tidal lagoon more than four kilometres long, and the hotel gardens lead down to it by a ramp and steps. It fills around the full and new moon, for a few hours around the daytime high tide, on about half the days of the year, and it is usually under a metre deep at its deepest. For the rest of the time the water at the gate is the open beach. The lagoon is also the teaching water of the René Egli windsurf and kite school, which holds the licence for lessons across all of it, so families share it with beginners on boards.
What to do. Check the lagoon timetable René Egli publishes for each year before you choose your dates, and plan the beach days around the spring tides.
Sotavento is the windsurf and kite beach of Jandía, and the wind reaches the pools.
The hotel stands at the northern end of Sotavento, the nine-kilometre beach that the island's tourist board names as the windsurfing and kitesurfing beach of the Jandía peninsula. The windsurf centre in the hotel garden describes the spot as windy all year round: the north-east trade wind speeds up between two ridges, which makes it substantially stronger here than along the coast around it. That is why the boards are here, and it is also why the sand, the children's pool and the terraces can be windy, and why evenings on the terrace can turn cool.
What to do. Pack a warm layer for the evenings. If the children are old enough, turn the wind to use with a course at René Egli in the hotel's palm garden.
No town around it, and the bus stop at the gate is suspended.
Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura has no village around it, only ZEL next door. Costa Calma, the nearest town, is 47 minutes on foot or 6 minutes by car, and the Gorriones bus stop at the hotel turn-off has been suspended until further notice. The airport is a 64-minute drive. Everything beyond the beach is a drive too: Morro Jable 26 minutes, the start of the track to Cofete 28, Betancuria 48 and the Corralejo dunes 88. Within a 10-minute walk there is the hotel, the beach, the windsurf centre's beach bar and ZEL, and little else.
What to do. Hire a car for at least the days out; parking at the hotel is free. Without one, book the airport transfer before you travel.
The quieter pool, the lounge and the tasting-menu restaurant are for adults only.
The Reserve is the adults-only part of the hotel, for guests aged 16 and over. Its rooms and suites are on the upper floors, and they come with their own lounge, private check-in and check-out, a private breakfast area and a pool of their own. Mahos, the signature restaurant, with a tasting menu built on local produce and traditional recipes, is adults only (16+) as well. A family books outside The Reserve and shares the main pools: the heated saltwater pool and the tropical pool, both shaped like lakes, and the children's pool with slides. Bali beds by the pools cost extra.
What to do. For a sea view without The Reserve, book a room or suite whose name says Ocean View or Ocean Front. Ask the price of a Bali bed on arrival.
It is a big all-inclusive, and the buffets keep fixed hours.
The hotel has 363 rooms and suites, and all-inclusive is the only board. Breakfast and dinner are buffets at Gastro Hall, at fixed hours: 7.30am to 10.30am, and 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Buffet dishes are sometimes served cold. The alternatives are the Italian trattoria Mascalzone, Lemon Fish Nikkei for ceviches, and Kanna by the pool at lunch. Rates are lowest in May, June and the autumn and highest at Christmas, New Year, in February and at Easter.
What to do. Ask about the à la carte dinners on the first day, and eat at the buffet early in its service.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants to walk to restaurants and bars, explore the north of the island every day without a car, or avoid wind. Couples after a quiet hotel should look only at The Reserve, and families who want calm, shallow water every day of the week should know that the lagoon keeps to the moon.
Who should book it anyway
Families with young children who want a week of sand and pools. The children have a pool with slides, a playground, a kids' club and an entertainment programme; the parents have a heated saltwater pool shaped like a lake; and at the bottom of the garden there is a long golden beach, with a windsurf school for the older ones. Book the Suite so the children sleep in a room of their own, time the dates to the lagoon timetable, and around the full and new moon the shallow lagoon fills right below the gardens.

Our verdict
A five-star base for a family beach week, with slides by the pool and, at spring tides, the lagoon on the doorstep. Check availability for the Suite, and time the dates to René Egli's lagoon calendar.
