The catch at Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace

Four things stand between the renovated rooms and the stay. None of them takes anything away from the wide sand of Playa del Matorral, the four pools and the spa, which are the reason to come, but each one decides which room to book, how to plan your dinners and whether this stretch of coast suits your week.

On our shortlists

  1. It is a hotel for couples and families, not an adults-only one.

After its 2018 renovation the hotel was sold as an adults-only five-star. Since it reopened after the 2025 renovation it welcomes couples and families: cots come on request, Interconnecting Doubles are sold for two adults and two children, and children share the main pools, the buffet and the bars with everyone else. There is no kids' club. Guests who want a stay away from younger children have one inside the hotel: Star Prestige, for guests aged 15 and over, with its own reception, a private pool and sun terrace with Balinese beds, a lounge and a reserved area in the buffet.

What to do. For a pool for guests 15 and over and a quieter corner of the buffet, book one of the three Star Prestige categories.

  2. The Doubles come with two single beds, and the cheapest looks inland.

The entry Double and every sea-view Double, the Star Prestige Sea-View Double included, have two single beds, and all of them are about 32 m². A king or queen bed appears only in the two Star Prestige suites: the Sea View Star Prestige Junior Suite, about 40 m², with a separate bath and shower, and the Star Prestige Sea-View Suite, about 55 m², with a living room. The view also changes with the category. The entry Double faces the mountains of Jandía, on the land side of the building, the Side Sea-View Double sees the ocean at an angle, and only the Sea-View, Priority Location and Star Prestige rooms face the sea.

What to do. For a king or queen bed, book a Star Prestige suite. If you came for the sea, skip the entry Double.

  3. Dinner takes some planning: two restaurants to book and a dress code.

There are three restaurants. El Saladar, the buffet, needs no booking. The other two do: Teppanyaki Tsukiji, the Asian restaurant, with sushi, sashimi and dishes cooked at the hotplate, and alMar Beach Social Lounge, the chiringuito-style restaurant by the main pool. Bookings are made at the hotel, and with 437 rooms the teppanyaki fills quickly. Opening hours are published only in the Iberostar app. At dinner the dress code is formal in every restaurant, the buffet included: men need long trousers and closed shoes.

What to do. Book the teppanyaki and alMar on the day you arrive, and pack long trousers and closed shoes for the evenings.

  4. The coast here is quiet, with little within walking distance beyond the beach.

The hotel sits at Las Gaviotas, among other large resorts between Esquinzo and Morro Jable, and the walk along the street side leads mostly past other hotels. The centre of Morro Jable is 58 minutes away on foot, or 8 minutes by car, and its fish restaurants on the seafront and at the harbour are 11 or 12 minutes' drive. The airport is 72 minutes away by road off-peak, and the north of the island is a long day out: 96 minutes to the Corralejo dunes, 97 to El Cotillo. A bus stop on Pasaje Playas, the hotel's own street, is 3 minutes from the street entrance.

What to do. Arrange the airport transfer before you land, take a taxi to Morro Jable for an evening out, and hire a car for a day if the dunes or Cofete are on the list.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants a hotel without children around the main pools and cannot take a Star Prestige room, couples who want a double bed without paying for a suite, anyone who wants bars and restaurants on the doorstep, and anyone planning to tour the whole island from one base.

Who should book it anyway

Anyone who wants a week of winter sun on a wide beach in a freshly renovated five-star. Every room was redone in 2025 in the greens and terracottas of the island, there are four pools, one of them indoor and heated, a spa with a water circuit, and three direct ways down from the grounds to the sand of Playa del Matorral, with the Saladar de Jandía salt marsh in front of the western pools. January afternoons at the island's airport average about 21°C. Book the Star Prestige Sea-View Double, reserve the teppanyaki on day one, and most of the catches above stop mattering.
