What we looked for

Eight of our ten Gran Canaria hotels welcome children. Two are adults only, and they make two different trips. Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, is the beach one: 179 rooms beside the lighthouse plaza in Maspalomas, in the dry, sunny south, where the sand of Playa de Maspalomas begins and the Meloneras promenade sets off west past its restaurants. Hotel Veintiuno is the city one: seventeen rooms in Vegueta, the quarter where Las Palmas began in 1478, with the cathedral, the Casa de Colón and the market a few minutes on foot.

Check the age before you book, because it differs: 18 and over at the lighthouse, 16 and over in Vegueta. Both suit couples who like to eat out, along the promenade or in the old town's eating streets. Choose by the days you want, sand and sun or museums and tapas. A week can take both: off-peak, Vegueta is about 49 minutes by car from the lighthouse.

Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel

Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, admits no guest under 18, and every one of its 179 rooms is a double with a king-size bed and a balcony or terrace, so the whole building is set up for two. It stands beside the plaza at the foot of the Faro de Maspalomas: the sand of Playa de Maspalomas starts at the hotel's corner, the dunes are a ten-minute walk along the beach, and the Meloneras promenade sets off across the plaza.

The main pool, 232 m² of fresh water, is free to guests, with sunbeds, umbrellas and towels. Up on Rooftop Faro, two small infinity pools face the Atlantic, with cocktails and tapas; the pools and their Bali beds cost extra. Evenings begin with a drink at SURU, then fish or meat from Callao's Josper charcoal oven, or dinner along the promenade. It suits couples who like an evening out: the lighthouse plaza is a lively corner at weekends.

Hotel Veintiuno

Las Palmas, Vegueta, Gran Canaria

Hotel Veintiuno takes guests of 16 and over and no groups, and with seventeen rooms it is the smallest of our ten by far. The house is 18th century, on Calle Espíritu Santo, a pedestrian street in Vegueta about 50 metres from the cathedral of Santa Ana, and it keeps its courtyard, stone walls and old tiled floors.

On the roof, residents share a small, unheated plunge pool for cooling off, loungers in the sun or the shade and an honesty bar stocked with wine, beer and spirits, all looking at the cathedral's towers and dome. The roof opens from 9am to 11pm, and loud music is not allowed. Breakfast is cooked to order from a short menu that changes with the seasons, and whether it is in the price depends on the rate. There is no restaurant, which is the point: Vegueta's eating streets are three or four minutes from the door.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Gran Canaria

Which hotels in Gran Canaria are adults only?

Two of our ten. Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, by the Maspalomas lighthouse, takes no guest under 18, and its 179 rooms are all doubles with a king-size bed. Hotel Veintiuno, in Vegueta in Las Palmas, takes guests of 16 and over in seventeen rooms, and no groups. For a resort with an adults-only corner, Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity, in the hills above Maspalomas, keeps its Sunset infinity pool adults only, for 16 and over.

What is the minimum age at these adults-only hotels?

It differs. Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, is for guests of 18 and over, and no one younger can stay; its rooftop pools also sell day passes to visitors, from 16. Hotel Veintiuno takes guests of 16 and over and does not take groups, so a couple travelling with a 16 or 17-year-old can stay there but not at Hotel Faro.

Is there an adults-only hotel near the Maspalomas dunes?

Yes: Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, for guests of 18 and over. It stands beside the plaza at the foot of the Faro de Maspalomas, the sand of Playa de Maspalomas starts at its corner, and the dunes are a ten-minute walk east along the beach. The Faro de Maspalomas bus station is six minutes away, with Global's line 66 direct to the airport, and by car the airport is 32 minutes off-peak.

Do the adults-only hotels in Gran Canaria have a spa?

Neither of ours does. Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, has a gym included and massages at extra cost, and Hotel Veintiuno has its rooftop plunge pool. For a spa with age limits of its own, Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia's thalasso pool, steam room and salt cave are free to guests, and its sauna area is closed to under-14s; Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity's Be Aloe spa limits access for under-16s and sells a three-hour circuit for €35.

Is breakfast included at the adults-only hotels?

Not by default. Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel, is sold room only, from about €210 a night, and breakfast in the Ocean Restaurant adds about €54 a night for two. At Hotel Veintiuno, from about €85, breakfast depends on the rate: it is made to order from a short seasonal menu, not a buffet, so check that yours includes it before you pay.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
