The catch at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is a themed resort built round one view, and most of what is worth knowing before you book follows from that. Five things stand between the brochure and the stay: what the savanna costs, how far the parks are, when the rates jump, the building work and the price of the night safari. None of them is hidden, and none outweighs giraffes below the balcony if that is the trip you are planning.
On our shortlists
The savanna costs $213 a night more, and the entry room looks at rooftops or the car park.
Disney prices the lodge's rooms by view. The entry Resort View has two queen beds, a beverage cooler, a coffee and tea station and a patio or balcony, but Disney describes its view as rooftops or the car park, and the Water View faces the pool. Only the categories sold on a savanna view face one of the three savannas round the hotel, where giraffes and antelope graze. On Tuesday 2 February 2027 the Resort View is $527 a night before tax and the Savanna View $740; the king-bed pair is $535 and $752. Disney sells a savanna view, not a particular savanna or particular animals, and each savanna has its own mix. Disney names the Arusha Savanna, the one inside the horseshoe, for its two-queen Club Level savanna room, from $963, and for two suites.
What to do. If the animals are the point, budget for the Savanna View from the start rather than hoping for an upgrade. Ask for the Arusha Savanna when you book; it is a request, not a promise. Anyone staying can watch the savannas from the Hakuna Matata playground and from Sanaa at Kidani Village.
The parks are a Disney bus or a drive away, and Magic Kingdom is the furthest of Disney's four.
The lodge has no monorail, boat or Skyliner. Disney's free buses leave from the stop by the entrance, in front of the Giraffe Trail rooms, and run to the theme parks from 45 minutes before opening until an hour after closing, and to Disney Springs during its hours. The water parks take a change of bus, at Animal Kingdom for Blizzard Beach and at Disney Springs for Typhoon Lagoon. By car, off-peak with the roads clear, Animal Kingdom's car park is 6 minutes away, Hollywood Studios and Epcot 16, Disney Springs 17 and Magic Kingdom's car park at the Transportation and Ticket Center 18, with the monorail or ferry still to take. Universal Studios Florida is 26 minutes and Epic Universe 27.
What to do. Hire a car if the week includes Magic Kingdom, Universal or Epic Universe: overnight self-parking is free for hotel guests, and valet is $42 a night, sales tax included. On Magic Kingdom days take an early bus, because Early Theme Park Entry, 30 minutes every day of the stay, only helps if you are at the gate for it.
Holiday weeks put the Savanna View up from $740 to as much as $1,091 a night.
Disney prices the lodge by season and day of the week. The Savanna View that costs $740 on Tuesday 2 February 2027 is $842 to $908 a night from 12 to 20 February, the week of Presidents' Day, and again from 7 to 20 March and 2 to 10 April, the spring-break weeks either side of Easter. Every night from 21 March to 1 April, round Easter Sunday on 28 March, is $997. From 11 December 2026 it is $1,059, and $1,091 from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve. The entry Resort View moves the same way, from $527 to $631, $697 and $813. The cheapest weeks are mid-August to early September: $660 for the Savanna View and $488 for the Resort View on a weeknight. Tax of 12.5% comes on top.
What to do. For the savanna at the lowest price, aim for late August, January or early February, on Sunday to Thursday nights. If your dates are fixed to a school holiday, price the Savanna View for them before you settle on the room.
Disney is refurbishing guest rooms and some public areas until early 2027.
Disney is refurbishing guest rooms and some public areas at the lodge through early 2027, and warns that guests may see or hear daytime construction and may need to take alternate routes to some areas. It does not name the wings, floors or rooms affected. Jambo House, the building that holds every hotel room, also holds Disney's villas, and Disney does not say which of them the work is in, or give a firmer end date. The hotel rooms themselves were last redone in 2018 and 2019, with wood-look floors, lit African-style headboards and, in most, a walk-in shower.
What to do. For a stay before spring 2027, ask when you book and again at check-in for a room away from the work. Disney posts the notice on the lodge's own page, so look there before you travel.
The Starlight Safari costs $89 to $99 a head, and no one under 8 can go.
Disney's after-dark drive across the lodge's savannas is an extra, not part of the stay. It lasts about an hour in an open-sided vehicle, with a night vision device for each guest, and leaves at 8.30pm and 10pm from the Kidani Village porte-cochere. Disney charges $89 to $99 a person before tax, takes no one under 8, requires anyone under 18 to ride with a participating adult, and keeps the full price for a cancellation within a day of the tour or a no-show. It is sold to every Walt Disney World guest, not only to the lodge's, and bad weather can cancel it.
What to do. Book it as soon as your dates are set if everyone is 8 or over. With younger children, use the free side of the savanna instead: the Wildlife Field Guide in the room, the programmes led by Disney's Animal Specialists and the Hakuna Matata playground over the flamingos.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants Magic Kingdom most days without a car, or a monorail, boat or Skyliner from the door, since Disney's bus is the only free ride and Magic Kingdom's car park is 18 minutes away by car. Anyone who will book only the entry room and hopes for animals from the balcony: Disney sells that room on a view of rooftops or the car park. Families whose dates are fixed to Christmas, Presidents' Day week or Easter, when the Savanna View costs $842 to $1,091 a night before tax.
Who should book it anyway
Families whose children count animals before rides, and anyone spending days at Animal Kingdom, 6 minutes away by car. The Savanna View puts giraffes and antelope below the balcony, Jiko cooks in twin wood-burning ovens and pours South African wines, Boma does the African buffet, and the Uzima Springs Pool, 11,000 sq ft with a 67-foot slide and a zero-depth entry, faces the Uzima Savanna, with campfires and Disney films under the stars in the evening. There is no resort fee, overnight self-parking is free, and Early Theme Park Entry comes every day of the stay, with Extended Evening Hours on select nights. Book the Savanna View, at $740 on an early-February Tuesday, bring a car for Magic Kingdom and let the savanna do the work.
The catch elsewhere in Orlando
- Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & SpaWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
The entry Resort View rooms look over the courtyard, the marina or the pools, and like the Water View and Theme Park View rooms they are in the outer lodges, not the main building. On a Tuesday in January the lagoon view costs about $60 a night more and the Magic Kingdom view about $200 more.
- Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World ResortWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
Park days run on the resort's timetable: free coaches go once an hour to each of the four Disney parks, with no monorail, Skyliner, boat or walking route, and transfers to Disney Springs or Universal cost extra. Disney gives the resort its 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry but not Extended Evening Hours.
- Universal Cabana Bay Beach ResortUniversal Orlando
Extras add up: self-parking is $26 plus tax a night, tubes for the lazy river are sold rather than lent, and Galaxy Bowl charges for its lanes, which must be booked.
- Disney's Yacht Club ResortWalt Disney World, Epcot area
The entry Resort View rooms look over gardens, rooftops or the car park, and guests have found theirs facing a roof or the bus stop. The Water View, over Crescent Lake or the quiet pool, cost $118 a night more on a February weeknight in 2027, and Disney sells the view over the Stormalong Bay lagoons only with Club Level.
- Loews Portofino Bay HotelUniversal Orlando
It is dear, and parking comes on top: the entry room costs about $795 a night before 12.5% tax on a February weeknight and about $1,330 between Christmas and New Year, and self-parking is $36 a night plus tax ($45 for valet).
- Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews HotelEpic Universe
The rooms are small for the money. The entry Standard 2 Queen Beds room is 325 sq ft (30 m²), a fifth guest needs a $35-a-night rollaway, and on a February weeknight the Park View room costs about $200 a night more.
- The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande LakesGrande Lakes
A $55 nightly resort fee and $58 a night for valet, the only parking at the Ritz, add $113 a night before tax to the room rate.
- Disney's Pop Century ResortWalt Disney World, Skyliner area
There is no table-service restaurant. The Everything POP food court, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and crowded at peak meal times, Petals Pool Bar and pizza delivered to the room are the choices on site, so order ahead in the My Disney Experience app or plan dinners in the parks.
- The Alfond InnWinter Park
The hotel runs no park shuttle and its free house cars go only around Winter Park, so the parks mean a car or a taxi, 28 to 31 minutes to Universal Studios and Epic Universe and 42 to 47 minutes to the Disney parks with the roads clear, and more at rush hour.
