The catch at Disney's Pop Century Resort

Five things stand between the rate and the stay. None of them is hidden, and none outweighs the gondola for a week of Epcot and Hollywood Studios, but each one changes where you eat, how you reach the other parks, when you travel and how many rooms you book.

On our shortlists

  1. Dinner at the hotel is a food court: there is no table-service restaurant.

Everything POP, in Classic Hall, is the hotel's one restaurant: seven counter stations open from 7am to 11pm, with mains at about $11 to $18, from Mickey-shaped waffles at breakfast to burgers, pizza and, after 5pm, mojo-roasted chicken. Beyond it there are Petals Pool Bar by the Hippy Dippy Pool, open from 11am to 11pm, and pizza delivered to the room. With 2,880 rooms sharing one food court, it is crowded at peak meal times, a recurring complaint from recent guests. The nearest table service is a gondola ride away: Sebastian's Bistro at Caribbean Beach, one Skyliner stop, and Topolino's Terrace at the Riviera, after a change there.

What to do. Order ahead in the My Disney Experience app and collect at the counter, and eat before or after the rush. Book any sit-down dinner early: guests of Disney hotels can reserve tables for the whole stay, up to 10 nights, 60 days before arrival.

  2. The gondola serves two parks, with a change, and Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are bus rides.

The Skyliner station on the bridge to Art of Animation is 5 minutes' walk from Classic Hall, but its line runs only to Caribbean Beach, where you change for Hollywood Studios or for the Riviera and Epcot's International Gateway. Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs are reached by Disney bus from the stops outside Classic Hall, from 45 minutes before the parks open until an hour after they close, and for most of the year the water parks need a change of bus at Animal Kingdom or Disney Springs. The farthest blocks, in the 1980s and 1990s sections, are about 7 minutes' walk from those stops. With clear roads, which means off-peak, the drive is 14 minutes to Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center, 17 to Animal Kingdom, 23 to Universal Studios Florida and 26 to Epic Universe.

What to do. Put Epcot and Hollywood Studios on the days you want the gondola, and catch the first buses for Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. A car helps: self-parking at the hotel is free, and standard parking at the four theme parks is included for guests of Disney hotels.

  3. The Skyliner closes from 24 to 30 January 2027, in Disney's cheapest weeks.

Disney shuts the gondola for refurbishment from Sunday 24 to Saturday 30 January 2027, with complimentary buses instead, and again from 24 January to 2 February 2028. Those dates fall inside the stretch from 4 January to 3 February 2027 when the Standard Room costs $195 a night from Monday to Wednesday, so the cheapest weeks of the year include the one without the hotel's main reason to stay. On other days the Skyliner runs from an hour before Early Theme Park Entry until 90 minutes after Epcot or Hollywood Studios closes. On nights when Epcot runs Extended Evening Hours, a perk for guests of Disney's Deluxe hotels and a few others, not this one, the line to Pop Century does not run during the extra time.

What to do. For $195 nights with the gondola running, stay Monday to Wednesday between 4 and 20 January, or from 1 to 3 February 2027. On an Extended Evening Hours night at Epcot, leave at the regular closing time or take the bus.

  4. Every room is the same layout for four, and sound carries between them.

All four room types have a queen bed and a second queen that folds down from the wall and doubles as the table, or one king instead. A room takes four guests aged three and over, plus a child under three, so a family of five with no child under three needs two rooms; there are no suites. Disney publishes no room size. The type you pay for changes the view and the walk, not the room: a Standard Room can be in the 1980s or 1990s blocks, 7 to 9 minutes' walk from the Skyliner station. Noise from neighbouring rooms is a recurring complaint from recent guests, and the Hippy Dippy Pool beside Classic Hall has activities every day and films on select nights.

What to do. Pay $32 more for a Preferred Room, close to Classic Hall and the buses, and skip the Preferred Pool View if the children go to bed early. A family of five aged three and over should budget for two rooms from the start.

  5. The $195 rate is a January weeknight: at Christmas the same room costs $359.

Disney's rates for the Standard Room move with the calendar. $195 is the price from Monday to Wednesday, 4 January to 3 February 2027; in those weeks Thursdays and most Sundays are $210 and Fridays and Saturdays $252 to $271. In Presidents' Day week, from 15 February 2027, the room is $259 from Monday to Wednesday and $322 on the Friday and Saturday. Spring break and Easter, 19 March to 1 April 2027, cost $315 every night, and Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve 2026 $359 a night, rising to $377 for the same week in 2027. Tax adds 12.5%. There is no resort fee, and self-parking is free.

What to do. If the dates are yours to choose, come Monday to Wednesday in January, clear of the Skyliner closure, or Monday to Wednesday between 16 August and 1 September 2027, when the Standard Room is $206.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants a sit-down dinner at the hotel, a quiet pool or one room for five guests aged three and over. Anyone whose week is mostly Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, which are bus rides, and anyone uneasy in a gondola, the hotel's main link to Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

Who should book it anyway

Anyone planning a park-heavy week around Epcot and Hollywood Studios on a budget, and families of four on a first Disney trip. On Disney's standard rates it is the cheapest room at any of the four Disney hotels with a Skyliner station, $195 on Tuesday 2 February 2027 against $231 at Art of Animation, with the gondola 5 minutes' walk from the lobby, 30 minutes' early entry to the theme parks every day of the stay, free self-parking, standard theme-park parking included and no resort fee. Pay $32 more for a Preferred Room near Classic Hall, order breakfast ahead in the app and ride the Skyliner to dinner.

Our verdict

Book Pop Century for the cheapest room on the Skyliner at Disney's standard rates, early park entry and free parking, and pay $32 more for a Preferred Room near the lobby. Plan dinners in the parks, and keep a late-January trip clear of the Skyliner's closure from 24 to 30 January 2027.
